By day, take in the unique landscape, where the distant ridgelines form the shape of a resting hippopotamus or, as locals say, the mighty Diprotodon — a prehistoric giant marsupial native to this very land (be sure to check out the amazingly preserved fossilised skeleton at the Coonabarabran Information Centre!) This site is named in honor of the Gawambaraay people, a local clan and dialect group of the Gamilaraay (Gamilaroi) Nation. The name speaks not just to place, but to the living culture, language, and deep ancestral connection to Country that has existed here for tens of thousands of years. We acknowledge their ongoing relationship with this land, and we invite guests to tread gently and with respect. With over 2,500 acres to explore and no fixed campsites, you’re free to choose your own view — tree lines, open paddocks, or stargazing sweet spots. This was our second Hipcamp experience, Ally and her parents Dave and Kim made us feel very welcome. We were met and directed to where we would be camping, the views are beautiful and you feel very isolated which is the experience we wanted! Our daughter loved watching the sheep and lambs in the paddock, very happy with our stay!

Star gazing trip

My Dad and I stayed at Ally's place for a weekend to do some star gazing. It was absolutely amazing. The spot Ally had for us was private, secluded and good for pitching the tents and we were free to choose if we wanted to be elsewhere on the property. Great view of the sky for stars and sunrise/sunset. Ally was very hospitable and gave great recommendations for things to do around the area, in particular a local bushwalk to a nice lookout over the region. Overall 10/10 experience would recommend to anyone looking to see the stars/camp in the area.

Beautiful spot not far from the Warrumbungles. Views were amazing and the stars at night were even better. Ally made us feel so welcome and nothing was too much for her. Thanks for having us Ally.
