By day, take in the unique landscape, where the distant ridgelines form the shape of a resting hippopotamus or, as locals say, the mighty Diprotodon — a prehistoric giant marsupial native to this very land (be sure to check out the amazingly preserved fossilised skeleton at the Coonabarabran Information Centre!)
This site is named in honor of the Gawambaraay people, a local clan and dialect group of the Gamilaraay (Gamilaroi) Nation. The name speaks not just to place, but to the living culture, language, and deep ancestral connection to Country that has existed here for tens of thousands of years. We acknowledge their ongoing relationship with this land, and we invite guests to tread gently and with respect.
