We are completely off-grid (no wifi to distract you) and we run off tank water (for this reason showers are only available for two hours in the evening). There are multiple camp sites on the property - some are close to hot showers and toilets, others are within a short walking distance. Some sites are perfect for our self sufficient campers who might want a nice private location and don't need access to amenities. There are two shared camp kitchen areas (with pizza ovens and bbqs). We have two amenities blocks with toilets and hot showers and two further compost toilets located at other sites. Campfires are permitted in designated areas (check with us when booking) and firewood can be added to your booking - we do require at least 24 hours notice if you want wood. There are lots of old-style games for the kids such as cricket, tennis, playground, bikes available, a swim in the dam and general country running around fun! Unfortunately we no longer have our flying fox, but there are plenty of other activities to keep you busy. We have some great bush walking areas where you might be lucky enough to see our resident wombats or our breeding pair of Wedge-tailed Eagles. The property dates back to the early 1900s and there are numerous historic buildings on the property. The earliest is a wooden slab hut that was built around the beginning of the 19th century - the Goulburn Penny Post newspaper, dated 3 December 1904 lines the walls of the hut. It also has a two shearing stand wooden shed built by Marcus Dawe in 1922. It was a windy weekend but we were well protected . The animals were friendly and the highlight of my daughter’s stay . Our dog had a great time , for her first camping trip. Loved Coolendel. Great location.. off the beaten track but not too off beaten. The lady at checking was friendly and informative. We camped mid November during the week and literally had the place to ourselves. They had two amenities with hot showers which was a bonus on the first morning. But the rest of the time the fresh water of the Shoal Haven river was perfect. About 90% of sites have fire pits so make sure you bring your own fire wood. No 4G or 5G network but you could buy wifi to access communications. During the three days of camp we managed to see wallabies, kangaroos, wombats, peacocks and abundance of birds life. The stars at night were on full display. One thing I would recommend if you’re camping during the school holidays is to bring your own portable toilet or off grid shower as the amenities would be at premium use Most sites have taps you access fresh water.

Great spot to camp. We normally camp by the river but in future, will stay here instead. Lovely to wake up with mobs of roos around and its family friendly and more secure than free camping down the road. Highly recommended for families who want to spend a few days panning without the worry of rangers and undesirables by the river. Lots of beautiful farm animals as well.

Amazing place to set up for a tent camp! The property is beautiful and abundant in wildlife. We saw kangaroos, kookaburras, of course camels, and heard plenty of different bird songs. Plenty of flat open space to set up and spread out a bit while not being too close to your neighbour campers. Toilet facilities were definitely a highlight amenities, super clean and comfortable to use, definitely a pleasant bonus! Wayne was also a great friendly host and made us feel very welcome. Not too far from Sydney or from the closest town and an easy quick getaway from busy city life. Will definitely be back! Thanks Wayne!

It was a lovely stay by the riverside with very close access to the river. The campsite was very spacious and had clean toilet and shower facilities! Would definitely recommend this campsite and also would love to come again!

Weekend Trip to Country Journey, Boxgrove farm

Karen and Joel are lovely hosts - keen to make sure you know about all the great things you can do at their place and to point out all the useful facilities. There's lots of separated camp sites so you'll easily find a spot that suits you without being on top of other campers. The facilities are in good condition and always clean.

1 night at Pine Gums, via Goulburn.

We enjoyed our stay at the Pines in our tent. Directions were easy to follow and each site has clear direction. Some camp sites are dirt and some grass, each with their own fire bucket. We picked a grass site on top of the hill for the nice view. We would stay again.

Where to go

Northern Tablelands

North of Goulburn, the verdant Tablelands climb up into the southern Blue Mountains, and there are several national parks within day-trip distance. Swim and camp along the riverside in the Abercrombie River National Park, escape the crowds at backcountry campsites in Nattai National Park, or discover Wombeyan Caves.

Bungonia

East of Goulburn, the soaring canyons, rocky gorges, and dense bushlands of Bungonia National Park provide challenging terrain for explorers. Hike to scenic lookouts, venture into underground caves, or get your adrenaline fix canyoning, rock climbing, or abseiling. Campsites are located in the park and along Shoalhaven Creek.

Canberra Tablelands

A patchwork of lakes, farmlands, and tree-lined valleys stretch southwest of Goulburn, all the way to the Australian capital. Sample cool-climate wines in the Yass Valley, spot birds around George Lake and Bathurst Lake, or enjoy hiking, mountain biking, and camping in the forests of the Tallaganda National Park.

When to go

Goulburn has four seasons, but the weather rarely hits extremes, and outdoor activities are possible year-round with the right clothing. Summer (December through February) can get busy, so book campsites well in advance, especially for the surrounding national parks.

Know before you go

Goulburn has bus and train links to Sydney and Canberra, but having your own transport is recommended for exploring the national parks.

Goulburn has a small selection of shops where you can pick up camping gear and stock up on supplies.
A permit is required to camp within NSW’s national parks, and campsites must be booked in advance.

Nearby attractions

A popular sport and recreation destination, Windamere Dam is just several hours inland from Newcastle and is a great day trip for those camping near the Blue Mountains.
