Shasta View Campsites are part of a former 30,000 acre ranch that was split up into smaller parcels in the 1970's. It is comprised of 5 to 500 acre parcels. All these parcels are homesteads. There are no commercial or industrial areas on the Ranch. In 2005, I started looking for land in the Shasta area after falling in love with the Mountain and it's surrounding lakes. I have always known exactly what the land I would spend time on would look like. One day, in 2006, I was driving on the Hammond Ranch, again hoping I would find that place. I was driving my van, with my 2 kids and some of our friends, through a heavily wooded area. I made a left turn down a dusty dirt road and Eureka! I had found IT. I was at the top of a 60 acre meadow that had a full unobstructed view of Mt. Shasta, encircled by lenticular clouds. I told a friend of mine, who was at the time a realtor in the Shasta area, that I had found a piece of land that looks perfect to me. If, that is, it also had a creek on it. She did some searching around and found out that the land that is now Shasta View was in fact for sale. And, it had a creek on it. And it was comprised of some acreage in the meadow and some in the trees. This was everything I had wanted. I bought the land within the next 2 weeks. After camping on the land a few times, I started to understand where the best sites would be to build some structures. Because the meadow always has a certain amount of moisture to the ground, it is not suitable for building a structure. The good thing about that, is that nobody who owns land in that meadow will ever build there. We will only be looking at Mt. Shasta from that meadow. Never a building. The platform I built in the meadow offers on a chance to sleep under the stars. Billions of them. My property is only one of two that have old, large Cedar and Pine trees on it. It made perfect sense that I would be building a small house in those trees. While camping on this land, you will find exquisite beauty and solitude. Within 30 minutes, you will find Lake Siskiyou and Castle Lake for some of the finest swimming around. If you fish, the McCloud and the Sacramento rivers offer some of the best trout fishing in the state. There are two “Blue Ribbon” designated streams. The first is Upper Sacramento River. It starts as a trickle from the melting snows of Mt Shasta and by the time it reaches the area around the town of Dunsmuir which is just south of Shasta City, it is a true “Blue Ribbon” designated trout stream. The place to find all the ins and outs of fly fishing in this area is at the Ted Fay Fly Fishing shop in Dunsmuir. The second “Blue Ribbon” trout fishing is on the McCloud River. Historically some of the best trout fishing to be found. I have fished both these streams and always caught fish. PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN BEDDING IF YOU'LL BE SLEEPING IN THE TREEHOUSE. And need I say anything about hiking on Mt. Shasta?Enjoy the entire property: The Treehouse in the woods and the Meadow Tent site with the incredible view of Mt. Shasta. Enjoy the new large outdoor kitchen and deck creekside. Be sure to bring your own bedding if you'll be sleeping in the treehouse.

Your pet will love running freely on this property. There are many deer that graze the meadow in the late afternoon and early evening, so please watch your dogs at this time of day.

No campfires

It is very important to not have any fires in any location except for the large fire pit that is just off the road near the first large platform where close to the parking. Please abide by this request so we never have a fire in this area. Please let me know if we are getting low on firewood at the fire pit. When you are done with the fire each day/night, please douse with water and stir the coals with the shovel that is there. Thank you.

Potable water available

There is a year round creek with water that comes out of a spring from the mountain behind this land. There is no livestock grazing between the source and my land. I have been drinking the water straight out of the creek for 11 years, as have all my children and our friends, and no one has ever gotten sick from it. As far as our experiences have gone, the water on the land is safe to drink.

Bins available

Recycling bin, trash bin. PLEASE take all garbage and recycling away from the property. When garbage is left in the metal trash can provided, small critters are able to get into it and spread the trash around the property. The can with the blue lid is for recycling. I would greatly appreciate it if you would let me know if the trash and recycling are not removed by previous campers when you arrive. Thank you.

Gary’s property is just beautiful. The kitchen is fully functional, and a great space next to the creek to gather. The field and view of Shasta where you set up the tents is so peaceful. The cabin is cozy and tucked away a bit from the kitchen for privacy. Gary was a great communicator. Highly recommend!

Private and serene nature retreat

This site is amazing, and we look forward to returning in the future. Gary was very friendly in all interactions. The treehouse fit Our family of 4 with small children on the floor. The cooking stove was awesome. The sound on the trickling creek and hammock were relaxing. We rented only the treehouse, which means we were sharing the 5 acre area with those who rented the meadow tent platform. Shared facilities include the compost privy, fire pit and picnic table. The view of Shasta and stars from the meadow was spectacular, so next time, we will pay a bit more and rent the whole place.

wonderful stay

We had the most wonderful stay at Gary's treehouse, we felt very secluded and deep in nature which was wonderful, we drank water from the local brook and felt very private to the other camp site on the property which is totally out of sight. The treehouse is really well stoked if you want to do any cooking on the 2 burners which we did! We loved it and would love to come back.

Everything was great. We may have missed it somewhere but we weren’t expecting the 100 step walk to the platform for camping — not a big deal — though added to the setup time for us with a kiddo. The view was wonderful, and we had everything we needed! Already thinking about returning and booking treehouse next time.

I kind of hate to share secret of this place. Beautiful, well cared for, peaceful, and safe. Just enough off the main roads for privacy, quiet and wildlife, but close enough to pick up ice or anything else forgotten. Lots of nearby hiking and water, although does require driving to get there. Loved it and will stay again

Simple, rustic, and cozy structure

The Shasta View Treehouse is a great little space. Perched up off the ground with beautiful meadow and woods views, the spot is perfect. Simple and cozy and well supplied. The nearby bubbling creek and fire pit make for a perfect setting to chill in. Plenty of shade from the hot sun. A full view of Mt. Shasta is just paces away. Look forward to visiting again in the future!

Perfect second visit here!

The Meadows site is fantastic. Upon arriving you follow a footpath across the meadow to a tent pad. Beautifully shaded from the afternoon sun by tall pines the spot is perfect. When you turn around and view the majestic Shasta, you'll realize just how beautiful the spot is. Lucky to camp there. The set up works well overall. Great fire pit, stream, and cooking or picnic deck, but know that you share it with anyone staying at the Treehouse. It can work just fine, but it's good to know. All in all, a perfect stay. In fact, this was my second visit to Gary's little paradise. Thanks!

Scenic, quiet and private

I loved this site so much that I almost don’t want to let the secret out. Amazingly beautiful and scenic. The upkeep is great - so many little details were thought of and the site was so clean and undisturbed that we couldn’t tell if anyone had been there before us. I will definitely be back.

A Magical Location!

Beautiful location. Gary is an incredibly gracious host. My fiancee (now wife) and I were looking for secluded location to have a small 4 person wedding ceremony and stumbled across ShastaView. We could not have imagined a more beautiful, serene location. As soon as we got out of our car we were greeted by a babbling brook. The view of Mt Shasta is truly breathtaking. We will definitely be back in the future for a longer visit.

Loved this place! The creek next to the treehouse was perfect and the view of Shasta from the meadow was stunning! Only thing is we would have liked to have a bonfire but it is fire season so we could not. Absolutely would recommend staying here and would love to come again!

Butterflies, Mountain, wildflowers!

The meadow camp site was magical and the shared platform/kitchen plus fire pit were largely ours as the cabin guests (two separate times) basically kept to themselves. If you like Mountain View’s, meadows with butterflies and wildflowers with a fresh stream rushing through, you will love this campsite. We love this spot and will be back!

The tree house was great, although only a partial view of Mt.Shasta. The drawback to the whole experience, and it’s a major downer, is that we were expecting a more private camping experience. That did not happen. It is a shared campsite, where the other party camping across the meadow is forced to utilize a common firepit and eating area that makes you feel like your camping with friends and family, but they are not your friends or family!

Beautiful

Shasta View is a beautiful spot and we had a great time camping there. The views are exceptional and there was firewood so we didn't have to bring any. We didn't expect this to be a shared campsite so be aware that there could be another group there. It wasn't a problem for us but you need to walk in to one of the spots and share the fire area. Still a great place.

The site is private and has a beautiful view. Gary was able to help us nagivate and definitely is very responsive which I appreciate. It was a mostly easy drive in, just bumpy at the end. Please be aware it is a short walk from the shared campsite (we ended up just selecting food supplies to take back and forth rather then carrying all our cooking gear every time - out in the car at night to not attract bears). Great distance wise if you want to see Mount Eddy (you do).

The Good, The bad, and the UGLY

The good, the bad, and the ugly. First the ugly: This is NOT A PRIVATE CAMPSITE. This is a shared space. We had children running up and through our area. Constant mess at the campfire, people using our grill etc. What you are not told here is that Shasta View Meadow is also on this site. All of us, whether at the treehouse or the campers at Shasta View Meadow were surprised to see each other. SHARED OUTHOUSE TOO. And ONE PERSON OBLIGATED TO BURY IT. The Bad: The site is in a residential area that is being developed. While lovely it seems that the neighbors are not happy about people camping here. This was just awkward. Gary told us to tell neighbors we were his friends. We had people in the vicinity come to the site, ask who were were and what we were doing here. It was weird to say the least. Other than the shared everything except your sleeping place, the site is not laid out well. We had a slight view of Shasta over the trees from the Treehouse. A full view is from the meadow but that was overtook by people and children. The Good: Host seems genuine - but he should make it very clear that this is a shared site. No one who rented "Shasta View Meadow" was expecting it to be a shared site. I vocalized my issues with Gary and he was kind to offer some refund. The site has a creek running through it. It is lovely. The pond was great.
