The vibe at Pianetta Ranch & Winery Camp
If you stayed here and have some insider info for us, let us know!
We had a short but sweet stay at Pianetta Ranch. Everyone we dealt with, from reservation to on-site, went out of their way to be good hosts. We used the site as a halfway point on our way from the Bay Area further south and weren't disappointed.
At night we sat by a roaring fire made of old vines, drank a bottle of estate wine we purchased from the owners, and were surrounded by the sound of crickets and distant frogs. The owners had a knack for sensing when we needed assistance and when we wanted our privacy. We'd stay here again.
I would highly recommend staying at the ranch! It is absolutely gorgeous and John and katelyn are so welcoming and accommodating! The campsite has a grill, fire pit, showers, and bathroom and is in the middle of a vineyard - the sunsets are amazing!! John offers tour and tastings of his winery - the wine is delicious and we learned so much about his winemaking process and history. This is a really special and beautiful place and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a quiet and relaxing weekend!
We had a great stay. The owners were nothing but pleasant, welcoming, and helpful during our 2 night stay there. We got a tour of the winery and got to taste the good stuff directly from the barrel. Hot showers, clean bathroom. Will absolutely stay here again.
I'll give the highest possible rating to Pianetta Ranch & Winery Camp. It was the best overnight camping trip ever and just a few short hours away from our home. How often does the opportunity come along where camping is paired with wine? The ranch is serene and relaxing with lots of space to spread out. Upon arrival, they greet you, show you around a bit and provide a packet of information about their property, their wine and the local area. The communal area is set up behind the owner's home, in an open space along rows of cabernet vines, with a shaded area below a large oak tree. There are picnic tables, a heavy duty cooking grill and firepit . They supply firewood for both cooking and for the firepit. I really enjoyed the outdoor showers and appreciated the traditional bathroom instead of an outhouse. There were other campers which made hanging by the firepit entertaining. What a nice time we had. I would return often if I could. The owners created a wonderful and memorable time for all. John is great at educating his guests on the many aspects and nuances that make good wine possible. Thank you John and Caitlin for having us!
What an amazing spot to be (moon and) star gazing!
Caitlin & co are very friendly and we got to buy wines directly from the wine hall, where it all happens. They have great wines and unique product with the Jug Wine: perfect for picnics and camping! But there's no push to purchase, so if you are just there to camp, it's just the huge dog and the beautiful surroundings by a campfire (wood provided).
And I love the propane showers!
I wholeheartedly recommend staying at Pianetta Ranch & Winery. John, Caitlin, and Beau are fantastic hosts, and Kelly was a great contact to have while organizing our stay. Everyone was so friendly and made sure we were comfortable. About an hour after arriving at camp, we were able to do a wine tasting with both John and Caitlyn. We had a great time sampling their amazing wines, and learned so much about wine while chatting with them! They have great stories to tell.
We spent two nights camping under a big oak tree right next to the cabernet grapes. There is a wood grill, a fire pit, three heated showers, three picnic tables, and a very nice bathroom for you to use (the nicest I have ever used while camping). They provided us with old grape vines to use as firewood. Beau (the dog) kept us company for much of our stay, and everyone in our group adored her.
I can't say enough good things about the hospitality of John and Caitlin, or about their beautiful ranch and delicious wine!
Really nice place! Beautiful spot conveniently located along the Central Coast if you're road tripping the 1. The host was very welcoming and friendly, and if we'd had more time, we would have liked to try the wine. Highly recommended!
My partner and I had a lovely weekend stay at the winery. Caitlin was very friendly and helpful throughout our stay. Firewood was provided, and the iron BBQ grill worked great. The outdoor showers were hot, and the bathroom was clean. We also really enjoyed cavorting with the winery dog, Bo.
The camping area is a large, flat area adjacent to the vineyards and the owners' house. There is very little shade available, so be aware if you're visiting during the summer (it was 90+ degrees and very sunny during our stay in early September).
Overall we had a great time, and would love to visit again next time we're in the area.
Great experience! The site is very well maintained and has a great fire bit as well as a grill, along with a few picnic tables. There is also a heated outdoor shower. The owners are great, very helpful and provide info about the area, had a good time chatting with them. The property is beautiful as well, would definitely come back.
Great camping spot! We camped over a cold November weekend and found the warm bathrooms and hot showers much needed. The camping area is great with plenty of room to cook and hangout. Fabulous sunsets, sunrises and views. We also really enjoyed our tasting at the vineyard.
Our stay was for one night, in the California "winter" which means that all of the surrounding rolling hills and land is bright green and lush. Our host was so friendly and we received a packet upon check-in which listed local attractions, and information about their jugs (of wine). :)
The ranch dog, Beau is adorable and friendly. Get a jug of wine for camping, and more to take home. The outdoor showers are heavenly, and there's plenty of communal campfire space. I could see Pianetta being perfect for a group campout.
Overall, camping at a winery was such a cool, and relaxing experience. Don't wait until summer... go in the winter and be surrounded by rolling green hills. Stay warm with a wine blanket. Cheers to hipcamping! 🍷
This is a beautiful wide open camping area. The winery is small but makes some excellent wine, and the surrounding hills and vineyards make for a really nice backdrop for camping. It is also located near Pasa Robles and lots of hiking areas. I would highly recommend this little gem.
Camping at Pianetta Ranch was fantastic and the hosts are so very very nice and gracious. There is a nice plot laid out for cooking and community in the middle of the campsite; there are also a couple of trees there under which you can pitch your tent and keep things in the shade during the warmer parts of the day. The showers and restroom are very nice and we had no issues whatsoever cleaning up for a nice dinner out in Paso Robles.
To our hosts: your stories, generosity, and kindness are what the camping community is all about. Thank you for a wonderful stay and we hope to see you again sometime in the future.
Caitlin, John and Bo (the dog) are great hosts! We had a blast there! The winery is beautiful, quiet, serene, and the wine is superb. I definitely recommend this site to those who like to look at the stars with a bottle of Pianetta wine. We are already planning our next trip there! Thank you Pianetta Winery, you guys are great!!
My friend and I stayed at Pianetta Ranch and Winery in December. John Pianetta, the owner of the land and fourth generation California farmer, met us as we pulled in our campervan. He gave the basics and a folder his daughter, Caitlin, had put together with local attractions and restaurants. This site has a wood burning grill(and aged wood to use), several picnic tables, and our favorite; a fire pit stocked with dried vines for burning. There is a bathroom that was impeccably clean and outdoor shower which we opted out of...it went down to 25 F one of the nights we stayed! Close by you can visit Paso los Robles which hosts a variety of restaurants, shops, and of course wine. We drove to the coast to see Elephant seals in San Simeon and lunch in Cambria. The Hearst Castle is in that area, too. Caitlin and her father were gracious hosts. Highly recommend.
Love the quite camping experience with nice amenities. Sounds of nature include: coyotes, crickets, frogs, owls and other birds. Tents and tables are on walk on bark which kept the dirt down. We loved riding our road bikes down the quite roads. We will be back!
We stayed at Pianetta Winery for a night when traveling from SF to LA. It was the perfect, secluded accommodation. Caitlin greeted us upon our arrival and gave us a tour of the grounds - beautiful bathroom, outdoor showers, and fire pits. We were permitted to tour the winery grounds - highly recommend the walk through the grapevines. The views are incredible and a worthwhile stop. The dog Beau is an added bonus! Recommending Pianetta Ranch and Winery to my friends and hope to stay again in the future.
Our hosts were great and we had a wonderful stay in the middle of the vineyard. Although we arrived late it was easy to find and we were rewarded with the best night sky ever! The place was wonderfully set with views across hills and the vineyard and we were parked underneath a large tree - it was quiet, there were superclean outside showers and a great bathroom, firewood and picnic tables. We were welcomed with an info package and sad we had to leave again after one night. Make sure to get some of the Pianetta wine, it´s delicious!
Pianetta Ranch was a gorgeous place to camp! The host provided a fire pit as well as outdoor firepit grills. She even gave us a handy folder with information about the winery and the area. The views were gorgeous with the stars and the sun rising over the winery. I would highly recommend anyone to camp here! Do note that service is very spotty and there are quite a bit of crane flies. But other than that, my boyfriend and I had a lovely time camping here!
We had a wonderful stay at Pianetta. You can freely walk the grounds and even schedule wine tastings on the property (in advance.) The wines are all reds and delicious. They provide citronella candles, picnic tables, trash cans and firewood for the fire pit/Santa Maria style bbq. For people that are not fans of roughing it there are hot propane showers and a traditional toilet attached to the winemakers home. It is a bit out of the way if you're looking to be in the heart of wine tasting... @10-15 minutes from San Miguel (which has a beautiful mission with the only original frescoes remaining in a CA mission.) There is a small market there, a gas station, and a mexican restaurant but not much else so prep before arrival is ideal.
Such a great property and kind hospitality from Caitlin. We stayed two nights in our RV and it was a perfect getaway from the city. We did the barrel tasting and cheese course and it was a nice addition to a camping experience. The outdoor showers were a huge plus too! We will definitely be back!
Such an awesome property! The Pianetta Ranch was absolutely wonderful! Caitlin was super welcoming, and Beau (her French Mastiff) was quite the host! Hot showers, bathroom, fire-pit with plenty of wood, a grill and benches ... what more could you ask for! We'll definitely be visiting again. And if you get a chance to taste their wines, you won't be disappointed!
This place is awesome! We showed up when it was over 100 degrees wandering if we should stay and camp. Best decision ever. We ended up getting a private tour and wine tasting. Woke up around 630 am and walked the beautiful vineyard. I would definitely go back.
Pianetta Ranch and Winery Camp was absolutely amazing. The grounds were gorgeous and the hosts were unbelievably helpful. The winemaker showed us around the wine making facilities and gave us the history of the winery. He answered all of our questions and even got us firewood. Caitlin helped us get everything squared away and even made sure we were doing ok after she had been in an accident the day we were supposed to arrive. There is a lovely bathroom on the campsite and the most adorable outdoor showers. Waking up on the vineyard on the amazing grounds of Pianetta was a highlight for sure. The only thing I would have changed would have been to stay longer. We cannot wait to go back. Sidetone; the wine is great!
The wine, the barrel tasting and cheese pairings, the custom blends by John, the self-described fourth-generation farmer (winemaker appears to be the byproduct, or result of his farming interests), the secluded environment and proximity to Paso, the no-where town of San Miguel, the remoteness of the campsite in proximity to civilization, the kind and generous accommodation and conversations before and after arrival, the heap of old bone-dry vines that were there for us to light a very fast and roaring fire, the outdoor showers with heated water, the far-off sound of the coyotes, the closer sounds in the morning of the cows and the peacock, and the one shooting star — what a wonderful and warm and friendly experience.
My boyfriend and I were travelling from LA to the Bay area and Pianetta winery and camping was our half way point for the night. Pianetta winery is a beautiful property with amazing views of the hills of Indian Valley. John and Caitlin Pianetta were excellent hosts. The camp sites have beautiful views of the Vineyard. There is one clean restroom, three clean showers with hot water, and free wood for making camp fire. We will definitely come back to explore the surrounding area further.
Pianetta Ranch was a fun and beautiful spot to pitch our tent for the night. John, the winemaker, greeted us and was our host for the reasonably priced tasting paired with local, delicious cheeses. The wines were full bodied and John's stories were robust. It was a lovely experience I would recommend to anyone. He has really done a lot to make his property comfortable with a clean, private bathroom, 3 outdoor showers with plenty of hot water, a few picnic tables, a fire pit and an excellent Santa Maria style bbq! He even provides wood for both the bbq and the pit. We bought some carne asada from the mexican market in San Miguel and it turned out ridiculously well over the hardwood grill. Overall, John was an excellent host and provided a great setup for guests. If you plan to book this spot, here are some tips:
- there is no potable water, so bring plenty of bottled water and ice
- arrive at the ranch with all supplies and provisions already purchased. it's a solid 6-7 miles away from San Miguel, which is the nearest town
- if you're visiting in the summer months, be prepared for the heat! it was 109 when we arrived!!! It cooled off nicely in the evening, but the morning sun is blazing. We broke camp at 7:30 and it was already uncomfortable. There is no shade at the camp site so maybe bring an easy up if possible.
- Bring a small broom and dust pan to sweep out the tent. This is probably already on your list of essentials, but if not, add it. Evening winds were VERY strong and while we managed to get the tent setup, just opening and closing the door quickly resulted in a lot of straw and other pokey pieces getting inside. We didn't have a broom and ended up kinda itchy in the night.
Overall awesome spot and I hope you enjoy your stay as much as we did!
Pianetta is perfectly situated north of Paso Robles, making it easy to access restaurants, bars, etc. We really enjoyed the remoteness of the location, it was particularly cool having a full moon. The bathroom and shower facilities were great to have as well as the picnic tables.
Camping with my family of 5 at Pianetta Winery was perfect. After a long drive, it was nice to see an awesome BBQ grill set up, a fire pit and all the wood we needed. We were the only family camping there so there was plenty of room and the views of the winery and golden hills were awesome! The owner welcomed us and even offered to give a tour of the winery. The next morning we all awoke and took hot showers that are provided on the site. This was such a quiet and relaxing campsite, highly recommended.
We had a great time! John and his crew were super helpful and great hosts. We stopped by their tasting room on our way to ranch/vineyard and picked up a couple of bottles. The vineyard was our base and we explored the region - 45 mins to Lake Nacimiento and Pismo Beach. We also hit some local breweries in town. The vineyard was great! Plenty of space and they were ok with us parking our 19' Hymer Activ. Outdoor showers was clean with good water pressure. Bathroom (only 1) was spacious and clean. No wifi. Sporadic cell phone reception on TMobile - none in camp area but some on periphery of vineyard. Will visit again!
Kelly had outstanding communication. The space was beautiful. You camp right by the vineyards. The place felt secluded with great amenities. The restroom and showers were clean and fully equipped with essentials. (TP, shampoo, conditioner, hand soap) The camp also had firewood to burn. (Depending on windy conditions)
My husband and I only stayed for 1 night and we wished we could of stayed longer. I highly recommend booking a tasting with them. We didn't have a chance to, but I can only imagine getting wine'd up and just crawling to your tent near by. The night got chilly so bring enough covers. Day time after 8am gets hot. Happy camping!
Went here during a heatwave in July and expected to be uncomfortable....but I was wrong.
Sites are on a flat area a fair distance from the house, are right next to the vines. There are clean picnic tables along with a nice Santa Maria grill and fire pit stocked with lots of wood. Three clean outdoor showers by the warehouse with hot water that are well maintained.
John Pianetta super cool, and if you're into it, invite him to share a drink and stories by the fire at night.
Area cools down nicely at night, but temp rises quickly in the morning.
I'll be returning.
Camping here was a great experience, especially if you like wine. We did a wine tasting on our first night, and Pianetta's selection is incredible! We ended up signing up for the club! The hosts are very friendly and knowledgable. It's a great spot to chill all weekend, or to get out and explore the area, go wine tasting, or even down to Morro Bay.
On a spontaneous whim, I booked my trip the night before my stay. After a several hour drive, I arrived to the vineyard. Where I was greeted with a temperature of hundred degrees and gentleman, who breifed me on where to set my tent. Once I pulled to the site and stepped out of my car, I realized that there was no use trying to set up my camp in this without a bottle of wine. So I drove to the tasting room in Paso Robles and enjoyed several samples. I left with a number of bottles and toured town before heading back to the vineyard. Once I returned and began pitching my tent, I conversed with another couple staying the night. While we talked and observed the area, the temperature cooled and the wildlife began to unveil itself. We listened to the coyotes howl, watched the cottontail rabbits run through fields, heard the boars roaming the valley, the owl screeching from the old oak tree, and the sound of the bats beating their wings as they flew around our heads. Then we watched the night sky, which was so clear that you could view the Milky Way. To add to this wonderful evening, we watch a metor shower as it lingered throughout the night. The next day I toured the areas of Pismo and San Luis Obispo. I was also able to tour some of the Spanish Missions nearby. Afterwards, I returned to camp to enjoy a second night similar to the evening prior.
While I was never able to meet the owner of the property, or the dog that every reviewer seems to buzz about, I would loved to have told him in person how lucky he is with the piece of property that he owns and to thank him for sharing it with us strangers to enjoy. I do plan to return.
Beautiful setting! The directions to the vineyard were easy. Everything was as pictured and described. The outdoor showers are amazing (And thank goodness for them because it was hot)! There were 3 other couples camping the same night as us. We all enjoyed a fun campfire with s'mores at the end of the night :)
We LOVED staying here! I would absolutely go back. The place feels remote, but is easy to get to and the wine is incredible. For anybody who likes big reds - they have a Cabernet Sauvignon/Syrah blend that I will dream about for years to come! We left the Bay Area after class and still managed to take a long stroll around the vineyards at sunset.
