Feel fee to explore the land! We are located near the Niagara Escarpment so you might even find a 460 million year old fossil on one of the field rock walls. Keep it! So we can keep a count of how many are found, and out of an overabundance of curiosity, please let us know and send some pics of your find.
Chambers Creek (small trout stream on the headwaters of the Milwaukee River-North Branch) winds through the valley on the west side of Cricket Ranch, providing a spot to cool your feet, stone step, or just listen to the relaxing sound of a babbling brook. The creek is overgrown with brush so access is limited to a couple spots at this time. We intend to clear some of the underbrush in the near future to allow for better enjoyment and management of this invaluable natural resource.
Kettle Moraine National Forest is a 10 minute drive, boasting great hiking and the can't-miss-it view from atop Parnell Tower.
Lake Ellen has a nice no-fee public boat landing just 2 miles away. The lake has clear water and is stocked periodically with Pike and Walleye. It is surprising how un-busy this lake is so bring your boat, kayak, paddle board, and/or assorted flotation devices and check it out. Our parking area can accommodate boat trailers during your stay.

Wonderful camping on huge property!
We really enjoyed our stay at Off The Beaten Path! The property is huge and beautiful. Jay was also a great host and stayed in touch leading up to the trip.
The spot we chose was great with plenty of space. It had trash and recycling bins available. A picnic table was also a plus. The property was easy to get to and the roads within are well kept for easy driving.
Some things to consider - We chose Haen hollow as our camping spot which is the spot closest to the road. At night, this spot is loud! You can hear a lot of trucks zooming by, so consider earplugs if you’re a light sleeper.
The property was a bit hard to find in the dark since there aren’t really any signs/ big markers to help us out. I also recommend taking a screen shot of the directions since service is spotty in the area!
Overall though compared to other Hipcamps it exceeds our expectations. Really well done! 5/5 we would visit again.
Grapevine was great!
A nice piece of land with 4 camping spots that are well-maintained and very clean. Jay leaves you a nice pile of wood to get your fire started, and there are clear paths for getting to and from sites and for hiking. We stayed at Grapeline and the two different sites were a nice bonus as it rained part of the time we were there, so we had our tent in the tree covered site, but sat around the fire at the open site. We also hiked the Kettle Moraine, at ice cream at the Hamburger Haus and had some mead at the local meadary. The only downside was the traffic noise which, unfortunately, seems to be the norm at most conveniently located campgrounds.
Great spot for family camp!
Jay was awesome to work with on getting set up! We had a last minute change of plans and he made sure we would have the right spot for our camping adventure with our two big vehicles. The spot was perfect and he stopped over right away to make sure things were good. He let us know about some of the cool fossils you can find which gave our kids something to hunt after for most of the day and night. Will definitely be staying here again!
Privacy and space at cricket ranch
I cannot recommend Jay's Cricket Ranch property enough! We happened to be a few of their very first Hipcampers on the property and Jay's care for the land and attention to detail is apparent! It's beautiful land with a diverse array of landscape, from forest, to tallgrass and wildflowers, to a small valley descending to a flowing creek, all of which is interconnected by small walking paths and even smaller game trails. There are a few campsites to choose from, separated from each other by plenty of forest in between. The next nearest site to ours was a couple hundred feet away through the woods, and so this is a very secluded and quiet camp for all ages! There is plenty of open space at each site, and even more room to explore in woods. Jay communicated very well prior to our trip, and messaged us during our stay to ensure we had everything we needed. This is a very memorable Hipcamp to which I have no doubt we'll return!
