Off the Beaten Path @ Cricket Ranch provides a true back to nature environment for campers. Located on 50 acres of private forest, field, and valley, our campsites are very secluded and separated by acres of woodland. Each layout is unique, embracing what nature has provided. Backpacking (or wagoning) to your camp from the parking area is necessary as the 5' wide paths do not accommodate cars/trucks.

Hiking distance from parking area: (1) Camp Cricket is 600 Ft. (2) Haen Hollow is 250 ft. (3) Rocky Top is 700 ft. (4) Grapeline is 1000 ft.

Feel fee to explore the land! We are located near the Niagara Escarpment so you might even find a 460 million year old fossil on one of the field rock walls. Keep it! So we can keep a count of how many are found, and out of an overabundance of curiosity, please let us know and send some pics of your find.

Chambers Creek (small trout stream on the headwaters of the Milwaukee River-North Branch) winds through the valley on the west side of Cricket Ranch, providing a spot to cool your feet, stone step, or just listen to the relaxing sound of a babbling brook. The creek is overgrown with brush so access is limited to a couple spots at this time. We intend to clear some of the underbrush in the near future to allow for better enjoyment and management of this invaluable natural resource.

Near by:

Kettle Moraine National Forest is a 10 minute drive, boasting great hiking and the can't-miss-it view from atop Parnell Tower.

Lake Ellen has a nice no-fee public boat landing just 2 miles away. The lake has clear water and is stocked periodically with Pike and Walleye. It is surprising how un-busy this lake is so bring your boat, kayak, paddle board, and/or assorted flotation devices and check it out. Our parking area can accommodate boat trailers during your stay.

Really enjoyed this Hipcamp. Stayed at Rocky Top. Parking is well marked. The paths are well mowed and its just a few minutes walk to the campsite. Sites seem to be pretty separate, and I didn't see anyone else besides the owner, who greeted me upon arrival. Beautiful glacial rock walls surround the tent site. Nice fire ring and grate. Definitely get the firewood pre-delivered. Watch for the two blue reflectors marking the driveway! There's a gas station in town for last minute needs.

Awesome experience all the way around. The sites are beautiful and separated by a good amount. It felt like we were roughing it while still being close enough to civilization The property owners were clear with directions and generally very nice. Sites are maintained and the firewood i pre-ordered was waiting for us at the site when we got there.. Can't wait to come back next year!

Jay was the ideal host and his camp sights are out of this world beautiful. I am an Eagle Scout and my family has been camping since I was barely able to stand, so I’ve been to my fair share of campsites over the years, but I’ll say that the Grapevine campsite that Jay had was one of the absolute best I’ve ever been been too.

It was incredibly ideal. The land was flat and even. The site was an amazing little clearing smack dab in the middle of the woods with plenty of space and an incredible view of the stars. You felt like you were completely isolated within the woods and about as close to nature as you could get. Yet, the site was well maintained and there was an incredibly nice picnic table as well as garbage receptacle and fire pit.

Jay was accommodating and kind. The pricing for these sights was an incredible value given that he was such a kind and helpful host, his sights were beautiful and spaced very well apart from each other (honestly couldn’t even hear any other sights on the property), and he had plenty of firewood available as well.

I highly recommend checking this fantastic host and his sights out, take it from someone who has seen everything from State and National parks to back country rustic sights in the boundary waters canoe area, this was one of the best camping trips I’ve been on in a long time.

The site was very private and laid out well. The property was beautiful with lots of wildlife. We had a deer walk through our campsite both nights we stayed. There’s a nice creek on the property and a cool recreation area where we played corn hole and ultimate football. We also went fishing with our toddlers to a nearby trout farm, called Cedar Springs Trout Farm. The property is also pretty close to actual lakes for fishing or boating. The hosts were also super kind and helpful. Great experience.

We loved our stay “Off the beaten path” on Jays property. Truly right off the road (we missed it the first time), we stayed at quaint and site perfect for the land. Our host was kind and helpful, even messaging with an offer of stopping by his site for a cup of coffee in the morning! Important additions since the photos we saw: Our site (Rocky Top) also came equipped with a picnic table, cooking grate, and a garbage and recycling bin, and the sleds Jay provides we’re a huge help in transporting our gear to our site. Be prepared for a little mud if there has been recent rain, but nothing the sled couldn’t handle. We had a beautiful view of the sky every moment of our stay, and enjoyed a little wander around the land as well. Overall, a quiet and excellent experience that we would be happy to have again!

We really enjoyed our stay at Off The Beaten Path! The property is huge and beautiful. Jay was also a great host and stayed in touch leading up to the trip.
The spot we chose was great with plenty of space. It had trash and recycling bins available. A picnic table was also a plus. The property was easy to get to and the roads within are well kept for easy driving.

Some things to consider - We chose Haen hollow as our camping spot which is the spot closest to the road. At night, this spot is loud! You can hear a lot of trucks zooming by, so consider earplugs if you’re a light sleeper.

The property was a bit hard to find in the dark since there aren’t really any signs/ big markers to help us out. I also recommend taking a screen shot of the directions since service is spotty in the area!

Overall though compared to other Hipcamps it exceeds our expectations. Really well done! 5/5 we would visit again.

A nice piece of land with 4 camping spots that are well-maintained and very clean. Jay leaves you a nice pile of wood to get your fire started, and there are clear paths for getting to and from sites and for hiking. We stayed at Grapeline and the two different sites were a nice bonus as it rained part of the time we were there, so we had our tent in the tree covered site, but sat around the fire at the open site. We also hiked the Kettle Moraine, at ice cream at the Hamburger Haus and had some mead at the local meadary. The only downside was the traffic noise which, unfortunately, seems to be the norm at most conveniently located campgrounds.

Jay was awesome to work with on getting set up! We had a last minute change of plans and he made sure we would have the right spot for our camping adventure with our two big vehicles. The spot was perfect and he stopped over right away to make sure things were good. He let us know about some of the cool fossils you can find which gave our kids something to hunt after for most of the day and night. Will definitely be staying here again!
