We live on 20 acres on Road to the Sea, which has a remote green sand beach at the end of the road (4 miles down from us). We call our slice of paradise, Honua Laa (a sacred place). Straight down to the coast is a beautiful black and green sand beach and a huge tide pool. Rent a four-wheel-drive to get there. You don’t need a 4WD to get to our place, but you will need a SUV or truck. Go slow the road is bumpy and rough in places. We are 1.2 miles from the highway. Off the grid. Rustic, but fun. If you are a Eco tourist or seeking adventure, you will love our spot! The silence is golden and the stars are amazing. Don't expect a hotel...this is upcountry glamorous camping. Shared bathroom (see photos) about a 100 feet away. Hipcamp kitchenette includes a propane single burner, ice chest, No fridge. No oven. We have an outdoor fire pit, if you like campfires! It's one-of-a-kind! Most of the parcels are 20 acre parcels around… But a few smaller parcels across the road. We have nice neighbors who keep an eye on things. The nearest grocery store is about 3 miles away. The Hele-On Bus is just 1.2 miles up the road. If you want to drive to the green sand beach at the end of our road, rent a 4 wheel drive. If you are athletic, you can walk, but it is 4 miles down and 4 miles back. I recommend going early in the morning and take water. Hot water shower is propane. Bring ice for your ice chest. Bring drinking water. There is plenty of coffee and tea in the kitchenette. Boil hot water in the kettle, put cone filter with a paper filter and ground coffee inside and on top of thermos. Drip. It's delicious! This is off the grid solar and there can be days without sun, or other glitches. No wifi. I use ATandT and I understand that Verizon and Tmobile work also The panoramic ocean view is spectacular! Very peaceful and relaxing! The back 15 acres is an old Ohia forest with 500 year old trees and lots of birds. You might even see a wild goat or a wild pig. There are small caves and gorgeous rock formations. It backs up to Manuka Forest Reserve. We have beautiful furnished cabins with beds, so you don't have to pitch a tent. Pillows, blankets, fresh towels provided.

It backs up to Manuka Forest Reserve.

14 nights at 🌈 Rainbow’s End Farm & Homestead!

Wendy's place was a slice of paradise wrapped inside a full serving of paradise. Like any holiday there were a few hiccups , but Wendy was in full contact and we were treated as if it were our home . We will be back . The only real problem that could be resolved would be the cats prowling around . I counted 5 that came around regularly looking to be fed.

3 nights at Sacred Nature Sanctuary

This is a very special place! Very sweet people and well kept land and rental spaces. I give it all the stars. The shared kitchen and shared bathroom that comes with renting the Cacau sweet were nice and were low use (not many other renters using them). The land is magical with fruit trees and flowering plants everywhere! You can also walk up the hill through the coffee farm. The frogs are loud at night but I enjoyed them. ear plugs provided on the night stand for those who don’t.

3 nights at Gingerhill Farm Retreat

The Bamboo Cabin was a delightful glamping+ experience. We spent most of our time out on the lanai looking out at the tropical plants and food forest. We were grateful for the refrigerator so we could make use of the outdoor kitchen which was fun and easy to use. The composting toilet outhouse was clean and the toilet was very simple to use. We fell asleep in the comfy bed to the sound of frogs and rain on the tin roof. Try all the recommendations in the book—they’re solid. Super J’s has delicious local fare, including the vegetarian stew. I really appreciated that they had a yummy vegetarian option. Definitely check out the magic sand beach, especially if you enjoy diving into the waves like me. Also, there is no check out procedure, so pack in and pack out and leave the place as you found it (or better).

Weekend Trip to Pele’s Eye

Ruebon (the host) and his wife were amazing. The instructions to access the property were extremely clear. Additionally, he was there to greet us with a very warm welcome and explain where we would be staying. The property itself is amazing and I can’t think of a better scene to wake up to. Their hospitality was off the charts and I highly recommend this stay!

Weekend Trip to 🌈 Rainbow’s End Farm & Homestead!

We enjoyed our comfy bed and deck perch in the jungle. The open kitchen was lovely to cook in. Wendy was away, but communication was excellent, and the caretakers were available, helpful and welcoming. We were driving a Honda Fit with very low clearance, so we drove the rocky road VERY slowly, and planned to come and go only once a day (we spent two nights). I would stay there again for sure, but only if I had a vehicle with higher clearance.

Weekend Trip to Sunrise Cabanas Panoramic Views

This was our second early-December stay here. The property is in an excellent location above Naalehu, is easy to find, and has spectacular views of the surrounding hillside and ocean. Brian, the onsite manager, was responsive and friendly, and made us feel welcome. The cabins are cute and clean, and the crickets and coqui frogs serenaded us to sleep. The outdoor shower is private and clean, and has plenty of hot water. This is a simple little gem of a place, and we would definitely stay here again.

Thomas was incredibly accommodating as we booked this cabin last minute so that we could spend more time on the east side of the Big Island without having to drive back to Kona. He was there to greet us in the evening when we arrived after a day at the park, and was there to send us off as we continued on our journey in the morning. This cabin provides more of a camping feel as the property is off the grid, but you'll find all the essentials such as a full sized bed, linens, warm shower and a toilet. If you're like me and attract mosquitos, bringing a mosquito net may be useful as well.

Weekend Trip to Affordable Hawai'i

Loved the campsite, cozy tent and even a bit of ocean view. Host was welcoming and kind, left us local fruit and warm tea. Bonus for flush toilets and a warm (indoor) shower! Great location, remote and quiet but a close drive to some nice local spots. Great middle ground if you're traveling from Kona to Hilo and sightseeing along the way. Last bit of the route is a bit rough though, make sure you're ready for dirt roads.

I loved treehouse living at Rainbow’s End. This is my happy place! Waking up to birds talking, surrounded by greenery and trees, in a (very) comfortable bed (with mosquito net) is one of my very favorite things. Super relaxing, great getaway. I will definitely be back! Thank you! ♥️🌈

We loved staying at Wendy’s! She was an incredibly generous host and communicated really well. As soon as we landed in Kona, she let us know that a volcano was fountaining, told us to head straight there, and had no issues with our late check-in as a result! Literally a once in a lifetime opportunity we would have missed if not for Wendy. The space itself was beautiful. Wendy’s property is gorgeous and she gave us a lovely tour of all the fruit trees she’s planted. The little cabin we stayed in was cozy and we loved having breakfast out in the deck. If we’re ever in the area again, we’d stay at Wendy’s in a heartbeat.

4 nights at Camp South Pt Green/Blacksand Beach

We booked this room to extend our trip, and it was perfect. The space was both spacious and cozy, with thoughtful touches like a fridge and toaster oven that made our stay extra comfortable. The view from the room was incredible — a beautiful breeze and scenery we could’ve enjoyed for hours. Our host was truly the best. Their local recommendations were spot-on and added so much to our trip. We’re so grateful for their kindness and hospitality. Highly recommend this stay!
