Mahalo, for your interest in visiting Big Island Farms located half way between the Historic Town of Honoka'a and the beautiful Waipi'o Valley. We are a permaculture based farm that hosts students from all over the world interested in learning more about sustainability, permaculture farming, Hawaiian culture and much more. During our off season, we open up the farm for you to visit and enjoy the beautiful Aina (land) and facilities.
Your stay with us could vary, from relaxing and reading a good book on one of our many decks or hiking through our upper orchards to find the on property waterfall that runs most of the year.
Our property is 65 acres with 50 acres of Macadamia Nut orchards and free roaming sheep and cows. The lower 15 acres consist of many different gardens, a green house (please do not enter), multiple Food Forests, 8 Cabanas, 2 classrooms 4 showers, 3 composting toilets and a kitchen with common area.
Each cabana is screened in 360º with views, two bunkbeds (sleeps 4), air mattresses, (Bring your own Sleeping Bag/Pillows) shelves, clothes lines on outside and lockable doors. There is no electricity in the cabanas but there are power strips available in the common area.
The common area consists of a large deck with picnic tables, Wifi access (pw: pickalltheweeds), power strips for charging electronics, canopies for when it rains, a 2-burner hotplate for cooking, pots, pans, plates, utensils, cups, dry food storage and a full sized fridge with freezer. Please keep the area clean.
We also offer morning Breakfast Basket options:
Small basket $ - 2 Papayas, 6 bananas, 2 cups of coffee.
Large basket $ - 4 papayas, 10 bananas, morning coffee during your stay.
Please keep in mind the fruit may vary depending on what is ripe.

In order to preserve water we utilize clean non-smelling composting toilets. We also have 4 hot water showers, 2 sinks and vanity areas. Please keep showers to 5 min or less, Mahalo.
If you come with a 4-wheel drive vehicle you are welcome to drive farther up on to the property and park closer to your cabana, just follow the Parking signs. We do not recommend you drive up with cars or low vehicles as the terrain is a bit rough, instead please park down in front in one of the parking spaces.

We have a 24-foot Class C RV, Ohana, surrounded by coconut palms and offering a 180-degree, million-dollar view! Enjoy the peace and quiet along with refreshing ocean breezes.
The RV sleeps up to three guests, with a queen-size cab-over bed and a full-size bed. It includes a kitchen and a bathroom with a toilet and shower.
There’s a large covered lanai for watching the sunsets each evening, as well as a fire pit for campfires.
Mountain goats occasionally graze on the property, and during whale season you will not only see whales—you can also hear them!
We are located in South Kona, 35 miles south of Kailua-Kona, 56 miles from Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, and 95 miles from Hilo.
Captain Cook is 15 miles north and offers groceries, a hardware store, and several places to eat.

Weekend Trip to Waterfront Paradise
Probably the most unique stay on our trip. Sitting in a van looking up at a clear night sky and the waves come in was bliss. Page was a great communicator throughout and we felt taken care. She met us at the agreed time and gave us a full walkthrough of the fan. She even provided extra charging cords when asked. The van itself is clean and as described. We really enjoyed it and would happily stay again.

This is a very special place! Very sweet people and well kept land and rental spaces. I give it all the stars. The shared kitchen and shared bathroom that comes with renting the Cacau sweet were nice and were low use (not many other renters using them). The land is magical with fruit trees and flowering plants everywhere! You can also walk up the hill through the coffee farm. The frogs are loud at night but I enjoyed them. ear plugs provided on the night stand for those who don’t.

The Bamboo Cabin was a delightful glamping+ experience. We spent most of our time out on the lanai looking out at the tropical plants and food forest. We were grateful for the refrigerator so we could make use of the outdoor kitchen which was fun and easy to use. The composting toilet outhouse was clean and the toilet was very simple to use. We fell asleep in the comfy bed to the sound of frogs and rain on the tin roof.
Try all the recommendations in the book—they’re solid. Super J’s has delicious local fare, including the vegetarian stew. I really appreciated that they had a yummy vegetarian option. Definitely check out the magic sand beach, especially if you enjoy diving into the waves like me.
Also, there is no check out procedure, so pack in and pack out and leave the place as you found it (or better).

Could not recommend this place enough, it was such a peaceful space with beautiful views. We left feeling refreshed with full hearts. The host was more than welcoming, gave wonderful suggestions for local places to consider. The rooms were clean and had everything we needed.

The yurt is set on a beautiful farm and has all the amenities you'd need. I'd recommend bringing ear plugs if you are a light sleeper-as the sounds of the lush and dense tropical forest night life (maybe frogs) continue all night! My family and I were comfortable here for our 2 night stay and were able to dine in for all meals with the provided kitchen and fridge

3 nights at Magical yurt, stunning spa bathroom
Magical yurt with so many amazing points to mention. Spacious and well equipped kitchen, great location. The spa bathroom feels so luxury - though be sure to bring your own hairdryer - I got caught out with that! Every other thing you would expect from a hotel or vacation rental was included though - even flippers!

This was a unique and beautiful experience to share with people living in and off the valley land of Big Island.
If you’re an experienced camper/adventure seeker you’ll love this stay.
You meet at the top of the valley and hike or drive down.
Joel and his friend Kama were very helpful in making sure we were comfortably set up for our stay. My partner and I learned so much about what life is like in the valley and the land itself. There is a deep respect for the people and land here, and all guests should come with this shared respect and curiosity.
They were extremely generous with their time, space, and knowledge. Joel showed us how to harvest food that we then cooked together in the outdoor kitchen space. We then explored the nearby secluded black sand beach where we played with Yoshi, the resident dog🐕
If you’re lucky you’ll meet the most affectionate host, Ulu 🐈

Staying here was truly one of the most unique and special experiences of our big island trip — the highlight, without question. Jo’el and Kama were incredibly generous and welcoming hosts who made us feel like part of their world. They brought such warmth and fun to the entire stay.
This isn’t your typical stay — it’s an authentic, local experience that comes with its own quirks and adventures. But that’s exactly what makes it magical. We got to pick fresh fruit from the orchard, cook meals in the outdoor kitchen, and experience life the way locals do.
The secluded black sand beach nearby was absolutely stunning, and we even got to play Yoshi ball with Yoshi the dog and hang out with Ulu the cat — both total stars of the place.
If you’re looking for something real, grounding, and unforgettable, this is it. We absolutely loved every minute and would recommend it 100%.

2 nights at Gingerhill Farm Retreat
We loved this location. So close to lots of the activities we had planned around Kona. Also not far from restaurants and a laundromat.
The room was close to the parking area. We had a little decking where we could dry our swimwear. The room was nice and spacious so we could spread out our suitcases. Didn’t explore the farm much because it was raining but loved patting the cat that liked to sleep on the decking. The room also felt very private and the farm is behind a locked gate.

2 nights at Big Island Retreat
Very cute little place, nothing fancy but do you really need a fancy place to sleep??? We prefer to spend our time exploring on vacation not hanging around the house. The house was clean and had everything we needed and a few we never knew we needed. Carol was very sweet and showed us around the property along with history of the area and where to go for supplies. We would definitely stay here again.

With pets
We had a wonderful stay in Carol's tiny home. She truly shares the true Aloha spirit here on the Big Island. Her place was great for my dog Tyga. The dog run was set up in a beautiful yard that shares the outhouse. The outhouse was clean and easy to use. All and all a 10 for the price and privacy. We look forward to returning for another stay.
