Once your camp is set, you will be walking distance from a potable spring, waterfalls, a black sand beach, Waipio stream and Waimanu Valley campground 9 miles on the Muliwai wilderness reserve trail. When surf and ocean conditions allow you may enjoy kayaking, swimming, diving, fishing, surfing and seasonal whale and dolphin watching.
As camp hosts we will provide the best guidance during your stay and are available for more intimate one on one assistance with your choice of activities should you need. Please specify what your intentions for this camp experience are during our meeting at the valley lookout.
As active farmer gardeners we are seeking extra hands in work projects and welcome long stay extensions involving a work trade agreement. Be sure to let us know if you are interested in this option to extend your stay.

Waipi'o Lodge and Campsite is located in Kukuihaele less than a mile from majestic Waipiʻo Valley. In a place where horses and wild turkeys often wander by, this is the old Hawaiʻi. We offer basic campsites with picnic tables, drinking water, a fire pit, a composting toilet, and a pop-up tent in case it rains. You will be camping on soft grass amongst giant Ironwood and eucalyptus trees while listening to the soft sounds of the creek below. Take a swim in the spring-fed waterfall swimming hole and relax by the fire pit at night.
We also offer our beautiful 2 room tent fully furnished with a queen-sized air mattress, cozy bedding, lantern, and camping lounge chairs. Cooler upon request, you provide the ice.
We’re blessed to be located on the rainy side of the island because of all the abundance and greenery the rain brings. That being said, please be prepared for the weather. It can rain hard at times so having a good rain jacket is a great idea. On the other hand, people say that a sunny day on the east side of the big island is the best place to be in all of Hawaii.

Our property is in a secluded neighborhood, a 4.2 mile drive in from the main road (Highway 11). The drive in or out should take about 10-15 minutes. Volcano National Park is 19 miles from our home and will take about 30 minutes to drive. We are 18 miles from Hilo Farmers Market/downtown Hilo and again should take about 30 minutes. Pahoa area is 20 miles from us and just past a 30 minute drive. Tour the island during the day and come back to a spacious, private courtyard campsite where you can experience the beauty and sounds of our forest sanctuary.

For guests unfamiliar with the Big Island, it is not like the other islands people travel to. If Oahu is more Americanized, the Big Island is still more of a Polynesian Island. Our property allows guests to enjoy a genuine local experience.
The cabins have power and endless hot water. All water on property is rainwater harvested from our roof!
At night your ears will be greeted by the forest with sounds of coqui frogs. Many people love them 🐸 Please search for Bathing Suits and Rain Boots on YouTube to find a video of what our property sounds like at night. Our channel also features videos of tours we offer. More to be uploaded, check back often! Our tours include off the beaten path adventures ranging from sunrises and geothermal Kings baths, to prawn hunting to hikes that lead to waterfalls! They are all local gems that you will not find online or offered by any other tour guide agency. We are updating our ig @bathingsuitsandrainboots regularly with footage from adventures as well!
Beach gear such as surf boards, boogie boards and snorkel gear is also available. There is a detailed welcome packet with a variety of mostly free but some paid must see/do activities on the island!
There are a total of 4 cabins on the one acre lot. The owners are on property, other guests may or may not be here as well. There is a dog Valentine, two outdoor cats named Ghost and Tomi, and chickens/ducks.
Each cabin has a queen mattress. We rent both cabins out for larger groups.
Jungle massages are available on site starting at $100 for the hour.

We are at 1880ft elevation so it can get chilly at night. Winters are also rainy season so if traveling to the Big Island in the winter, I suggest some light layers for warmth, a raincoat and rain boots.

We're conveniently situated between Volcano National Park, Historic Pahoa Village, and Hilo's Port Town. We were suggested by many after our first 5 years here to open our homestead to others looking for a simple reprieve from the weight of the go-go world with hopes that people leave more connected to go with the flow. We hope by welcoming you to our homebase for your Big Island adventures we'll be able to help connect more people to the biophilia that has brought such tranquility to our lives. Aloha Aina!!
Your private space is a 20'x10' raised cabin that offers covered outdoor space as well as indoor accommodations. You will find the inside furnished with two full spring mattress bunk beds, a small eating bar overlooking our backyard area with two stool seats, a personal work area with an accommodating cooler for perishables (Please provide ice or we can arrange for block ice from our local general store if desired), and personal clothing storage, as well as wi-fi options. Your private cabin space does have full electricity separate from the commons, but still off grid so please refrain from using strong energy draw items like hair wands or instant heaters, such electrical items are not suited for off-grid electrical systems.
Our Common space is open from 7a.m.-10p.m. During this time, you will have full access to a shared kitchen, as well a full bathroom with both an indoor and outdoor shower. The bathroom is available around the clock but after-hours hot water is off so please be aware if you're planning on taking a midnight shower. Please let us know if you need any amenities such as hot water or wi-fi after 10p.m. or before 7a.m. Please make note of these times and being off grid means that we schedules use of high energy items with the daylight hours, and we will set a timer for your convenience of smaller items like internet with advanced notice, otherwise we are very energy efficient in the commons, this is hipcamp, so please don't mistake us for a Hilton :)
We are currently home to 4 wonderful dogs that may greet you as you drive up, 3 spectacular cats, 1 mischievous parrots, 3 goats, 12 chickens and 1 rooster. So please know there are animals present than are part of our Ohana.
We ask for you to take into consideration that we are a "Working homestead" and we are "Off Grid" so there will be projects much like any farm setting, for this reason we are not suitable for infants or young Children. There are animals that can make noises, there are mulch piles always moving around, compost piles that might not be your cup of tea because they smell, but they certainly make great compost teas to help the flowers grow that smell beautiful right outside your window! There are small projects that may look like clutter, such as seed saving, or canning, but those small clutters grow the plants that fill those jars! On occasion we have people who overlook this reality of nature and our connection to it... possibly because they've seen too many staged reality shows or maybe they have never visited a real farm in person before, but we are grateful that the overwhelming majority of people who have had this attitude have left with an appreciation for nature many expressed they never knew they had!! Those guests have filled our hearts with their kind gratitude :) This is a place full of joyful work for us, so please understand we are a destination for many who love nature, and if you're afraid of dirt or nature in general, this might be a great opportunity to connect with what has always been waiting for you to discover!!
Guest accessThe last two blocks into our homestead are rock road as we are a rural location. We will provide a map upon booking with the best access through our Ag-lots for your convenience. Please travel safe and plan for our check-in between 3p.m. and 9p.m. with early and late check-in avalible with approved notice :) Parking is available to either side at the end of the driveway.
Other things to noteAlittle about our homestead;Please understand that we are off-grid, and while we've been off grid 8 years now, we've only been hosting stays like this for 3 years, and we see that we are a destination for many visitors looking for a nature bathing kind of experience, but it's not everyone' cup of coffee... Sooo speaking of coffee, if you are looking for things like an General Electric coffee pot or any electric coffee maker (that are literally designed to wastes energy to just make money) we probably aren't the best fit for your stay ... BUT ... If you want to experience home grown Cacao added to fresh ground coffee brewed Italian style to make an amazing Mocha, FRESH, then we can easily make that while showing you some great energy saving ideas to take home :) like make coffee the way our great grandparents made coffee, it tastes better and is really easier than one may think! We share some toasted homemade sourdough bread out of fresh harvested stocks too, but it again isn't an energy guzzling shinny toaster that does the toasting, it is a cast iron skillet that we toast on, just like our great grandparents did too... Actually one of my favorite skillets belonged to my Great Grandma, so this is the real deal :) Come up and join us when we turn the commons on at 7a.m. if you're interested. We have very little light pollution which will afford beautiful star gazing on clear nights, and epic full moons!! But this means that you should use a flashlight or headlamp which we can provide at your leisure. We don't poop in a bucket in the woods, we actually have a working toilet, and Hot water for showers, a gas powered full range stove. But we also compost and make methane for 100% green energy use... There are chickens and goats, parrots, Dogs & Cats. We have been told by some that it is too cluttered, and by others you make me our home look clean our kitchen table (3'x9') always has some sort of a project on it. One guest said they were so happy to see so much going on as they sat watching us make bread, while another was upset that they didn't have a private kitchen. We feel we are very affordable for what we have to share, and if you feel this description will not fit your needs, then please don't book us because we're affordable. Trust us if we could offer a private kitchen it would only raise our price. We really hope more than anything to share and inspire what a homestead is, and that even in a suburb, or a rural apartment there are small things we can do to save energy and bring ourselves closer to nature!!

When surf and ocean conditions allow you may enjoy kayaking, swimming, diving, fishing, surfing and seasonal whale and dolphin watching.

As active farmer gardeners we are seeking extra hands in work projects and welcome long stay extensions involving a work trade agreement. Be sure to let us know if you are interested in this option to extend your stay.

Hakalau Springs Campground sits on 11 acres with two springs bordering the property with a variety of fruit trees and farm animals to interact with.
We offer basic campsites with picnic tables, drinking water, a fire pit, a composting toilet, and a pop-up tent in case it rains. You will be camping on soft grass amongst giant Ironwood and eucalyptus trees while listening to the soft sounds of the creek below. Take a swim in the spring-fed waterfall swimming hole and relax by the fire pit at night.
We also offer our beautiful 2 room tent fully furnished with a queen-sized air mattress, cozy bedding, lantern, and camping lounge chairs. Cooler upon request, you provide the ice.
We’re blessed to be located on the rainy side of the island because of all the abundance and greenery the rain brings. That being said, please be prepared for the weather. It can rain hard at times so having a good rain jacket is a great idea. On the other hand, people say that a sunny day on the east side of the big island is the best place to be in all of Hawaii.

Pitch your tent or pull up on our serene, lush courtyard. A hidden gem located in Mountain View on Big Island. Mountain View is centrally located between Hilo, Pahoa and Volcano. Our property is in a secluded neighborhood, a 4.2 mile drive in from the main road (Highway 11). The drive in or out should take about 10-15 minutes. Volcano National Park is 19 miles from our home and will take about 30 minutes to drive. We are 18 miles from Hilo Farmers Market/downtown Hilo and again should take about 30 minutes. Pahoa area is 20 miles from us and just past a 30 minute drive. Tour the island during the day and come back to a spacious, private courtyard campsite where you can experience the beauty and sounds of our forest sanctuary.

For guests unfamiliar with the Big Island, it is not like the other islands people travel to. If Oahu is more Americanized, the Big Island is still more of a Polynesian Island. Our property allows guests to enjoy a genuine local experience.
The cabins have power and endless hot water. All water on property is rainwater harvested from our roof!
At night your ears will be greeted by the forest with sounds of coqui frogs. Many people love them 🐸 Please search for Bathing Suits and Rain Boots on YouTube to find a video of what our property sounds like at night. Our channel also features videos of tours we offer. More to be uploaded, check back often! Our tours include off the beaten path adventures ranging from sunrises and geothermal Kings baths, to prawn hunting to hikes that lead to waterfalls! They are all local gems that you will not find online or offered by any other tour guide agency. We are updating our ig @bathingsuitsandrainboots regularly with footage from adventures as well!
Beach gear such as surf boards, boogie boards and snorkel gear is also available. There is a detailed welcome packet with a variety of mostly free but some paid must see/do activities on the island!
There are a total of 4 cabins on the one acre lot. The owners are on property, other guests may or may not be here as well. There is a dog Valentine, two outdoor cats named Ghost and Tomi, and chickens/ducks.
Each cabin has a queen mattress. We rent both cabins out for larger groups.
Jungle massages are available on site starting at $100 for the hour.
Please note the main image capturing a lava cliff sunrise is not visible from the cabin. It is about a 30-40 minute drive from us 🌊 ☀️ 🌋
We are at 1880ft elevation so it can get chilly at night. Winters are also rainy season so if traveling to the Big Island in the winter, I suggest some light layers for warmth, a raincoat and rain boots.

We're conveniently situated between Volcano National Park, Historic Pahoa Village, and Hilo's Port Town. We were suggested by many after our first 5 years here to open our homestead to others looking for a simple reprieve from the weight of the go-go world with hopes that people leave more connected to go with the flow. We hope by welcoming you to our homebase for your Big Island adventures we'll be able to help connect more people to the biophilia that has brought such tranquility to our lives. Aloha Aina!!
Your private space is a 20'x10' raised cabin that offers covered outdoor space as well as indoor accommodations. You will find the inside furnished with two full spring mattress bunk beds, a small eating bar overlooking our backyard area with two stool seats, a personal work area with an accommodating cooler for perishables (Please provide ice or we can arrange for block ice from our local general store if desired), and personal clothing storage, as well as wi-fi options. Your private cabin space does have full electricity separate from the commons, but still off grid so please refrain from using strong energy draw items like hair wands or instant heaters, such electrical items are not suited for off-grid electrical systems.
Our Common space is open from 7a.m.-10p.m. During this time, you will have full access to a shared kitchen, as well a full bathroom with both an indoor and outdoor shower. The bathroom is available around the clock but after-hours hot water is off so please be aware if you're planning on taking a midnight shower. Please let us know if you need any amenities such as hot water or wi-fi after 10p.m. or before 7a.m. Please make note of these times and being off grid means that we schedules use of high energy items with the daylight hours, and we will set a timer for your convenience of smaller items like internet with advanced notice, otherwise we are very energy efficient in the commons, this is hipcamp, so please don't mistake us for a Hilton :)
We are currently home to 4 wonderful dogs that may greet you as you drive up, 3 spectacular cats, 1 mischievous parrots, 3 goats, 12 chickens and 1 rooster. So please know there are animals present than are part of our Ohana.
We ask for you to take into consideration that we are a "Working homestead" and we are "Off Grid" so there will be projects much like any farm setting, for this reason we are not suitable for infants or young Children. There are animals that can make noises, there are mulch piles always moving around, compost piles that might not be your cup of tea because they smell, but they certainly make great compost teas to help the flowers grow that smell beautiful right outside your window! There are small projects that may look like clutter, such as seed saving, or canning, but those small clutters grow the plants that fill those jars! On occasion we have people who overlook this reality of nature and our connection to it... possibly because they've seen too many staged reality shows or maybe they have never visited a real farm in person before, but we are grateful that the overwhelming majority of people who have had this attitude have left with an appreciation for nature many expressed they never knew they had!! Those guests have filled our hearts with their kind gratitude :) This is a place full of joyful work for us, so please understand we are a destination for many who love nature, and if you're afraid of dirt or nature in general, this might be a great opportunity to connect with what has always been waiting for you to discover!!
Guest accessThe last two blocks into our homestead are rock road as we are a rural location. We will provide a map upon booking with the best access through our Ag-lots for your convenience. Please travel safe and plan for our check-in between 3p.m. and 9p.m. with early and late check-in avalible with approved notice :) Parking is available to either side at the end of the driveway.
Other things to noteAlittle about our homestead;Please understand that we are off-grid, and while we've been off grid 8 years now, we've only been hosting stays like this for 3 years, and we see that we are a destination for many visitors looking for a nature bathing kind of experience, but it's not everyone' cup of coffee... Sooo speaking of coffee, if you are looking for things like an General Electric coffee pot or any electric coffee maker (that are literally designed to wastes energy to just make money) we probably aren't the best fit for your stay ... BUT ... If you want to experience home grown Cacao added to fresh ground coffee brewed Italian style to make an amazing Mocha, FRESH, then we can easily make that while showing you some great energy saving ideas to take home :) like make coffee the way our great grandparents made coffee, it tastes better and is really easier than one may think! We share some toasted homemade sourdough bread out of fresh harvested stocks too, but it again isn't an energy guzzling shinny toaster that does the toasting, it is a cast iron skillet that we toast on, just like our great grandparents did too... Actually one of my favorite skillets belonged to my Great Grandma, so this is the real deal :) Come up and join us when we turn the commons on at 7a.m. if you're interested. We have very little light pollution which will afford beautiful star gazing on clear nights, and epic full moons!! But this means that you should use a flashlight or headlamp which we can provide at your leisure. We don't poop in a bucket in the woods, we actually have a working toilet, and Hot water for showers, a gas powered full range stove. But we also compost and make methane for 100% green energy use... There are chickens and goats, parrots, Dogs & Cats. We have been told by some that it is too cluttered, and by others you make me our home look clean our kitchen table (3'x9') always has some sort of a project on it. One guest said they were so happy to see so much going on as they sat watching us make bread, while another was upset that they didn't have a private kitchen. We feel we are very affordable for what we have to share, and if you feel this description will not fit your needs, then please don't book us because we're affordable. Trust us if we could offer a private kitchen it would only raise our price. We really hope more than anything to share and inspire what a homestead is, and that even in a suburb, or a rural apartment there are small things we can do to save energy and bring ourselves closer to nature!!

Gingerhill Farm Retreat was the most amazing and perfect authentic, raw and true experience! Sylvia met me at my car and guided me up the grassy path past the goats and chickens to show me the delightful facilities, the outdoor shower so delicious, the community kitchen with the am8’g view of the Pacific, and the simple sleep accommodation in the yurt! I fely at all times I was there as if I was sunk into the lush paradise that surrounded me. I will return if ever I am able and stay as long as I possibly can!

This is a special place, accessible, private and well maintained. The yip cottage with a hot shower is fun and well appointed. Even with other campers on site there was plenty of room and privacy. 1 night at Hamakua Guesthouse
It was a very peaceful stay, even though the property was fairly full it was quiet and minimal traffic. I really appreciated the detailed directions Matthew provided in the booking confirmation - follow them and it’s very clear. It took a few minutes to locate someone to check me in (since its not self check in, but there is no desk just a message board) but phone reception was better than many places in the island and they also provided a WiFi password on the back porch. I was a little disappointed that the hammocks are only hammock stands (i had a cabana in the past where the hammocks were able to be tied to the support posts diagonally across the room, but here the beam did not seem sturdy enough to bear weight). However, apart from that, it was a very solid, well-built, and cozy glamping style place. Perfect for its proximity to Akaka falls (go very early in the morning when they first open, that was very tranquil, forty five minutes later as I was leaving the falls were overrun.)

Glory and Tina were kind and welcoming hosts. Their property is beautiful, secluded, and great for either tent or RV/pop-up camper setups. The amenities are a little rustic, so just know that going into the trip; that said, Glory and Tina left a great setup for us that helped us enjoy our stay. Tina even brought fresh eggs and apple bananas! Definitely recommend for those wanting a simple, safe, and beautiful place to unplug and relax.

We spent a few nights in Chris and Esther’s cute little cabin and truly felt at home. The cabin has everything you need and is beautifully surrounded by nature. Small frogs sing you a lullaby at night, and ducks welcome you in the morning. Our kids especially loved the ducks and peacocks!
We had plenty of privacy, along with great support from Chris and Esther whenever we needed it. An additional advantage of staying here is that it’s an off-grid place, so even during storms, when the public electricity is down, you still have power.
The location is also great — very close to Volcanoes National Park, which made exploring the area easy and convenient.

Weekend Trip to Faris' Farm
Highly recommend staying at Faris Farm! My partner and I loved our cozy cabin with thoughtful amenities (like water, dishes, and candles). We had rainy weather while we were there and it was the perfect place to be with ample covered outdoor space! We also loved walking around the property with Brian and learning about its history, and trying Patrick's ube sourdough and lilikoi butter. Brian and Patrick are so warm and lovely. Their animals are sweet and charming :) We would go back again!

Weekend Trip to Hamakua Guesthouse
The cabana was nice. Sleeping in a hammock is not for everyone but if you can do it, this is a great place to stay. The common ameneties were great and the staff on the property were exceptional. The waterfall was also very nice. Would definitely go back in the future.

Our 2 night stay at Yip Camp Eco Retreat was perfect. Close to Volcano Natl Park for a full day of exploring the craters, lava tubes, ocean road vistas. Site was private with toilet and shower available. Tom was a helpful, affable host. Would definitely stay again.

A perfect place if you’re looking for a peaceful place to decompress! I stayed in the Bamboo Canopy and would definitely go back. Bed was comfy. Loved the coqui frogs croaking at night. I was surrounded by lush vegetation with a banana plant right outside my door. Bathroom is a compostable toilet which was super clean and hot shower was glorious! Kitchenware could use an upgrade, but the kitchen itself was kept very clean by fellow campers. Sunset view is the cherry on top!

He kindly offered his larger tent with good rain protection to the person in my party who only had a small backpacking tent that was already wet from rain the day before. Rustic place but fine. Only a few miles from Volcano National Park.

As a solo traveler who appreciates a unique farm stay experience, Faris Forest did not disappoint! The bunk house was a perfect spot and thoughtfully prepared with everything a glamper could ask for. Patrick and Brian made me feel welcome to their piece of paradise and went above and beyond to support me during my stay. I could not believe how unique the spot was. I loved the main house design and all the diverse plants and trees out on the farm and of course all the animals! This was my favorite stay on the Big Island… by far.

Thomas is a wonderful host. I booked a site on his land rather urgently after finding out that the National Park was closed. He’s only a 20 minute drive from there, so I was able to get up and go the next day.

We’ve stayed at many camps and Mae’s is easily the most beautiful, welcoming and well maintained camp I’ve possibly ever stayed at. She has thought of everything, from solar lights on the shelters to tankless water heaters in the clean, inviting showers - chairs, tables, firepit, grill, and trash can at each site, coffee station on her open patio, the best four-legged greeter I e ever encountered. As a campground host myself, I’m confident in saying Mae’s Moon Garden camp is the most spectacular place I’ve ever camped.
If you’re looking for camping on the island, Moon Farm Garden is a must stay, even with a glamping cabin to open shortly.
The friendly, well kept, comfortable environment is ideal for families, couples, singletons or just a pal’s getaway.
Mae has thought of everything and works hard to ensure her guests are comfortable, safe and happy.
Now I host an Airbnb but this is where I’ll send anyone who asks including my own family.
If you want an amazing camping experience in Hawaii, Mae’s place at Moon Garden Farm raises the bar for all other campgrounds. This place is the best and meets every need imaginable.
