Horseshoe Bay State Marine Park camping guide

Overview

About

There are a bunch of State Marine Parks in Alaska’sgorgeous Prince William Sound and Resurrection Bay, and Horseshoe Bay is one of ‘em. It’s a boaters’ paradise out here, and this particular bay is one of the only anchorages with public uplands in this slice of the sound. Horseshoe Bay is on Latouche Island, three miles northeast of Chenega Bay. You’ll find active mine plots, and even some with history behind them. The park’s campsites are along the big bog, situated north of the bay. You’ll get easy access to the water, beaches, and unmatched views of Latouche Passage. Sounds like a pretty good deal to us!

When to go

The ideal time to visit Horseshoe Bay State Marine Park is during the summer months, from June to August, when the weather is warm and the waters are inviting. However, be mindful of the peak season crowds. Spring and fall offer a quieter experience, with mild temperatures perfect for exploring. Winter can be less favorable due to cooler conditions and limited access.

Know before you go

  • Check the weather forecast before your visit to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience amid the park's natural beauty.
  • Be aware of any seasonal closures or restricted areas to protect the park's delicate ecosystems.
  • Accessibility may vary across different areas of the park, so plan accordingly if you require special accommodations.
  • While amenities are limited, ensure you pack essentials like water, snacks, and sun protection for your day out.
  • Respect the park's wildlife by maintaining a safe distance and not feeding the animals.
