Down the gravel road about 1/3 miles are logging roads to hike, bike and explore. OHV trails are a couple miles away but check local maps for detailed information.
Intentionally being minimalists beyond a fire ring and picnic table, there is a port-a-john (of humble means) to make your stay comfortable. You will need to bring your own firewood if you desire a campfire.

Wild apple trees and thimbleberries dot the property and you're welcome to pick from them when they are in season. A nearby trail connects directly to town and larger trail systems, making it easy to explore the area on foot or by bike.
We’re just up the road from Hungarian Falls, a beautiful nature preserve with scenic hiking trails, swimming spots, and cascading waterfalls. The historic town of Calumet is only 7 minutes away, home to charming shops, dining, and part of the Keweenaw National Historical Park. Local attractions include:
Swedetown Recreation Area – mountain biking and hiking trails
Calumet Lions Park – disc golf, horseshoes, and nature trails
Calumet Golf Course – only 2 minutes away from us
Calumet Township Waterworks Park – volleyball, basketball, picnic areas, and Lake Superior access
Heading south, you’ll find more adventures within 30 minutes, including Nara Nature Park, Michigan Tech Trails, Maasto Hiihto Trails, and the Portage Canal. For bigger excursions, Mt. Bohemia is just 40 minutes north, and Copper Harbor—with epic views and even more trails—is a bit further beyond.
Although we’re close to several towns and outdoor destinations, our property is peaceful and private. It’s the perfect basecamp for your Keweenaw adventure.

Our property provides a mixture of fields, forest, pond, and creek with some views of Lake Superior and of Isle Royale. We are conveniently located between Calumet and McLain State Park as well as adjacent the Swedetown Recreation Area (our property touches Swedetown's boundary and the M203 trailhead is just down the road). Using us as a basecamp, everything the Keweenaw has to offer is easily within reach.
Important details regarding our sites:
Sites 1 - 3 are for tenting groups. Among these sites 1 and 3 will accommodate multiple tents while site 2 only has room for one. There is a short walk to access our tent sites.
Site 4 is available for multiple tents, vehicle camping, and rv's.

Contact the host if booking in March or April. Also, contact the host if there are any special requests for 2026 that may appear blocked as we often use the site and can be flexible if needed.
This site has a private level aggregate 50 foot RV pad overlooking Lake Superior with 50/30 amp service, well water and septic hookups. This site is best for Class A, B or C RV's. Towables will work, but you will need to back in for access to your tow vehicle and your door will open away from the lake. No tents allowed. With respect for our good neighbors, no parties or loud music allowed. This site is for quietly relaxing with your family and friends and enjoying the big lake views.
The site has 100 feet of private sandy beach and great swimming (sandy shallow bottom out 100 feet). Included is a wood fired Sauna to help with the lakes colder water. Also included is a 16x20 deck overlooking the lake, 2 picnic tables, deck chairs, gas grill, charcoal grill, beach chairs and 2 fire rings (Firewood is available to purchase onsite or can be purchased at several places on the way in). A separate flushable toilet enclosure is available and can be used if desired. A canoe, 2 kayaks and paddles are provided for you to use at your own risk (Some lifejackets are in the deck box).
The premium site will support a 40 foot vehicle but require you to disconnect a towable at an angle for access to your vehicle. There is an additional RV parking spot with full hookups that may be available. Contact the host to confirm availability since I sometimes park my boat trailer there. The additional site will support a 36 foot vehicle again requiring you to disconnect at an angle for access to your tow vehicle (30 amps only from this additional site via a provided extension cord). A large Class A or C will require you to have good backup skills to get out and a spotter to watch for obstacles and clearance on the way in and out, but it is easily done. Plenty of blocks are provided for additional clearance if needed.
ATT has good cell service here and Verizon is OK but marginal at times.

Walk out of this cozy and clean little vintage camper onto the outdoor kitchen/bathroom that faces the Northern Sky. This is a great spot for star gazing and if your lucky the Northern Lights might give you a dance!
The camper is setup for a single person to sleep (twin bed). If your doing Vanlife or camping and want to sleep in your van or tent on the property while using the facilities - we'll refund you $10!
ACCOMODATION
The camper has electricity with lights/outlets/ a fan and a small heater. The windows open with screens for nice ventilation. The comfortable twin mattress is complete with a clean mattress cover. Please bring your own sleeping bag / bedding / pillow case / towel.
The kitchen has a mini-fridge and a gas camping stove and is furnished with all you need for cooking and eating. If you prefer cooking on an open fire there is a campfire pit that's a great spot to hang out on cool evenings. You can enjoy your meals on the little retro table in the kitchen or on the big picnic table in the yard. Internet is also available.
Your large private outdoor bathroom has a hot-water shower and a camper style toilet. (see photo). The camper is right next to the outdoor kitchen/bathroom which is connected to the back of the main house. It was all built with maximum privacy in mind for both the Hip-camper and the House-guest.
THE AREA
You are on the edge of the village of Larium in Calumet township. It's a very safe and quiet area. You can see some neighbor's houses from the yard - all nice good people :)
It's only a few minutes walk or bike ride to downtown Calumet where you can find a grocery store, coffee shops, a great bakery, restaurants ... Calumet also has a big farmer's market every Saturday during the warmer months and free music performances every Wednesday night at the Calumet Theater!
For nature lovers - your right in it! You can start hiking or biking right out of the camper. Your connected to miles of trails that cover the Keweenaw Peninsula. For swimming it's only a short drive to Calumet Water Works Park for an excellent Lake Superior Sunset Beach. You may also want to check out Mount Bohemia for the ultimate spa relaxation at the end of adventure filled days!

Really neat property. Evan met us when we arrived and rode a utv to where we needed to park. The cows chased us as we went passed their fence, because every animal loves my girlfriend, probably because they thought Evan was going to feed them. 🤣
The site are well designed. 3 had a great view of the good sized pond he has on his property. The location is ideal for people that are interested in rock hunting. 30 minutes from gratiot park. 10 minutes from Calumet waterworks park. 10 minutes from McClain state park.

It seems close to other buildings but it still felt pretty private. Some traffic on the road but it's tolerable. Really nice place to get away. There is lots of sand everywhere, naturally. Somebody left a prior review about a shipping container with cameras aimed at the site. We saw nothing of the sort. Not sure where they got that although there was a shipping container a couple lots over, we didn't see any cameras but there is also a fence between the site and the next lots over. We felt safe there.
Porta John was a bit full and quite smelly, a bit unpleasant but I've actually seen worse at another hipcamp site in the UP.
Directions for finding the site are very clear. Do not try to follow Google maps as it will get you close but about 3/4 of a mile off.

This turned out to just be a sand lot right up against a private beach on Lake Superior. It was beautiful and very quiet. There was a large fire ring which was nice. The only downside was that I could smell the porta john from a distance as the wind would carry the smell, or if I was within 10 feet without wind. It's a necessary evil I guess. I would still happily camp there again.

We loved camping on Evan's land! His land is private and tucked back by a lake. We were greeted by a wild turkey when we arrived at our campsite which was really cool. Campsites were set up really nice with a fire ring and picnic table. He also has an out house and running water from a well for guests. Tent sites have plenty of room but parking might be an issue depending on site. We really enjoyed our stay!

10/10 would stay here again! It was a gorgeous, spacious site. The location was great (my friends and I were able to explore up to Copper Harbor and down to Houghton with ease), the site itself was very clean and private, and the small touches were so thoughtful (fire making supplies and cooking utensils). Our only regret was not carving out enough time in our plans to explore the farm/trails and get to know the owners!

Our first Hipcamp ever! Lovely semi secluded spot, looks just like the photos. Good directions readily found, very little to no traffic. Waves were big and nice sound for sleeping. Cons- only that the porta potty is a little gnarly, tilted, but aren’t they all? All together a positive experience.

Site #4 was amazing. Away from everything, quiet, clean and beautiful. Evan was an excellent host super helpful and hospitable. We were thankful to find such an excellent property and host to stay with. We heard wolves, coyotes, and owls. The night sky was amazing. We'll definitely return. We had an F250 and a 11ft trailer and had no issues whatsoever navigating the campsite.

This hip camp is a sandy slice of paradise sitting right on a beautiful sanding beach of Lake Superior. Sunrises were beautiful on the lake and sets sets stunning over the marsh. There is an outhouse and picnic table for use. We will definitely be back.

Location, location, location. A beautiful beachfront camp feels like Cape Cod or Maine, very unique and special for the U.P.. Visited some beaches around the world & this really is just as special, everyday the lake looked different, very scenic by itself. Never stayed somewhere this close to the water.
Perfect sandy beach and amazing views. Also the property has everything, from a sauna on the beach, to a couple great fire pits, and deck overlooking everything. Most importantly, it has electric, water, and a toilet/bathroom. Makes the place perfect with truly everything you need for RV camping so you don’t have to think of anything.
The sauna made it special, going from Lake Superiors slightly chillier waters into the sauna a back again is a perfect cherry on top. Definitely worth checking out, the best HipCamp I’ve been to so far.
