Hemlock Hideaway and its 18 acres was originally part of a larger 100-acre plot that was surveyed and settled in the late 1700's by Gideon Granger of the Connecticut Land Company. Granger sold it to one Jehoikim Burget in 1815 for the whopping price of $400. The resident house was built in 1816 by Burget and then passed down to family members over the next 5 generations, until we bought it in 2003, marking the first time the house and remaining property were ever officially sold. In the mid 1800's, a grist mill was put up across the river from the cabin, and our creek was the main road in and out of that operation. There is a gravestone belonging to the wife of Jehoikim's son, she being half Native American and therefore couldn't be buried in the local white cemetery. We also own the original hand-written deed from 1815 detailing the sale of the original 100 acres to Jehoikim Burget. Learn more about this land: Our primitive cabin nestled in the woods overlooking the Grand River is a nature-lover's paradise! Come canoe, fish, experience wine country, or unplug and just get away from it all. Please note: There is no running water or electricity at the site, but the cabin is generator-ready and there is an outhouse. The cabin does have a wood burning stove for heat and simple cooking, however there is no running water or electricity. That being said, the building is wired and has plugs and outlets and is generator-ready. You provide your own generator and fuel. We provide bottled water, sheets, pillows, flashlights, a fire ring with cooking grate, charcoal grill (you provide the charcoal), access to firewood, and an outhouse with toilet paper. Our 1/4 mile of Grand River frontage can be accessed right outside the cabin door via a quick hike down the somewhat steep hillside. If hiking isn't preferred, then a quick two-minute drive will take you to the Harpersfield Covered Bridge Metropark - a favorite of local fishermen. Bigger groups with tents are welcome, but will need to bring all supplies beyond what we provide for two guests. Campfires allowed

Firewood provided, firepit, wood burning fireplace. Hemlock Hideaway has a wood burning stove inside as its source of heat and a large campfire ring outside. Guests are welcome to collect fallen and standing dead timber for firewood or purchase pre-cut wood for $5 per bag at our roadside firewood stand. There is also a charcoal grill at the campsite. Guests provide their own charcoal.

Composting toilet. There is a sawdust composting toilet just behind the cabin. Toilet paper and hand sanitizer is provided.

Off leash. Children and friendly pets are allowed. Pets MUST be house broken in order to stay inside the cabin. Please be aware that we have three young children, two cats, a chocolate lab named Tina, and too many chickens that wander the property.

Guests will need to provide their own plates, utensils, etc, but there is a large campfire ring, a large grill grate, and a bbq basket (for sandwiches, hotdogs, brats, burgers, fish) available for cooking on the open fire. There is also a park-style charcoal grill at the campsite. Guests will need to provide their own charcoal.

Great Getaway!

Had a amazing getaway for a few days! Cabin is awesome and it was great to unplug and leave worries at home. Hike directly downhill from the cabin led to a small waterfall and the Grand River. Stars at night framed by the trees were gorgeous. Highly recommended and look forward to returning!

The Perfect Getaway

I loved staying at Lisa and Patrick’s Hemlock heaven! The cabin is perfectly cozy, with just enough amenities for avid campers. The wood-burning stove kept me and the doggo I brought perfectly warm; compost outhouse is also super neat! The background story and history of the property is really cool too. Highly, highly recommend checking out Bridge St. and the Harpersfield Covered Bridge Metropark! Lisa was an incredible host - answering all of my questions and concerns with the utmost kindness. I can’t wait to go back!

I loved this primitive cabin in the woods. Lisa's instructions and descriptions are well written and accurately describe the location. She responds quickly to messages. If you need further help, she's a message away and is ready to help. The hand rake was my favorite tool to help clear the leaves as I hiked into the ravine. The space is clean and not cramped. The property is close to a covered bridge park on the Grand River. There are many wineries minutes away from the cabin. I highly recommend this location!

Private cabin with beautiful views!

Simple and rustic cabin with extra flashlights/lanterns. We loved how this was perfectly tucked away in the woods and yet still very easy to get to, very private. There is a large gorge just past the cabin that was beautiful to check out in the morning while having some coffee. Plenty of windows in the cabin for views/natural light to come in. You can open most of them to make it comfortable along with the wood burning stove that heated the place up in no time. Just be mindful that the beds in the loft are close to the ceiling (don't wake up and jolt upright haha) but everything was comfy and cozy in this cabin. We would certainly stay again!

This was my second time staying at Hemlock Hideaway as part of a road trip between Chicago and New York. It's a great place to pull off I-90 for a quick and easy 8 hour snooze.

We had a wonderful time at Hemlock Hideaway. It’s the best of both worlds - you are tucked back far enough from the road you have full privacy, however if needed you are only minutes from a mini mart. The cabin itself was everything you could need - clean, well kept, and roomy enough you do not feel overcrowded (two adults and one child). If it rains during your stay no worries, the large covered front porch is equipped with a swing and plenty of room to relax while you wait out the storm. This space is settled near a sizable drop off, so keep that in mind if you have small kids / pets. The location was great (less than 20 mins from Geneva state park), the owners checked in to make sure we were well taken care of, and the cabin was wonderful. I highly recommend, and we cannot wait to book our next stay!

Had an amazing trip staying at the hemlock hideaway. We tent camped and enjoyed having the hideaway nearby to store our clothes and food. It was so convenient having the fire pit, charcoal grill, and firewood for sale nearby. The location was close to hiking, kayaking, and wineries for amazing food and drinks. Lisa was a great host and always quick to answer any questions.

Great cabin! Nice outhouse, comfortable space, easy to find. Would be hard to climb to the bed area for some but the futon on the first level works too. Went to a great distillery for an art show very nearby.

Nice, clean and secluded spot. It's the only spot on the property, which is a bonus. Shaded, so even in summer it was not uncomfortably warm. A nice trail through the woods above the river. The description is completely accurate; owners are incredibly welcoming.

Nice weekend gateway

Loved the cute little cabin, secluded enough and peaceful. There is a river not too far from the site, we had so much fun there but the hike could be a bit challenging for people who are not used to it. Some awesome wineries near the site. We'll definitely get back here for the fall or cooler weather.

Great place to stay

This little cabin was a perfect fit for my needs as a stopover as I was traveling from upstate New York to Colorado. it’s tucked right next to a pretty ravine with not only hemlock trees, but also sassafras trees. Sassafras is not something very common where I live so that was a treat. The host provided very clear directions and instructions. Everything was in perfect order. Actually one of the nicest outhouses I have ever encountered! At the end of the road there’s a park. I thought the park looked familiar. It turns out, I found a geocache there once when I pulled off the highway to walk my dogs back in October 2020!

We had a great night out of the city. The cabin was super cozy and the whole site felt very peaceful. It was lovely to hear the river running nearby and we spent a long time watching woodpeckers nesting in a tree.

Cute rustic stay!

Super cute little spot to stay a night! My husband, toddler, pup, and I stayed a night on the way to NY. We got there later in the day, and left early, but really enjoyed the peaceful setting. My favorite part was in the morning looking out the many windows of the trees in the sunrise!

Wonderful Secluded Cabin

I loved my stay here and would definitely love to return. The area is quiet and secluded, and though there is a local road close by, the traffic is light and was not a disturbance. The cabin itself I found to be clean and comfortable, and the indoor wood-burning furnace kept me warm and comfortable at night even in freezing temperatures. I slept in one of the loft twin beds and found it comfortable. The sheets and comforter were clean and offered more than enough warmth when coupled with the heat of the furnace. The owners offer generously sized bags of firewood there for purchase which really came in handy, and they also allow you to gather wood from around the property. The composting toilet was clean and simple to use—they have information posted as to how to use it and how it works—and I didn’t find it smelly or unpleasant, unlike many of the pit toilets I’ve used at campgrounds. You simply cover the waste in sawdust that is provided for you, and that’s that! I was traveling alone, which can be a little scary for a lone traveler, but I never felt nervous or unsafe—I was grateful to have a lock on the cabin door as opposed to being alone in a tent. This was definitely one of the best places I’ve gotten to stay, and I hope to return with my whole family someday.

Thoughtful and caring owners

We loved camping at Lisa's place! Lisa and her family were so wonderful and helpful during our stay. They regularly checked in on us, got us supplies that we had forgotten to bring. Lisa even brought out chocolate cake and coffee during the day! They proactively added motion sensor lights to the path heading to the toilet. They have a little playground on their property which is great for kids to get their energy out. They have one of the cleanest porta potties I have ever seen in my life! They also had a campfire going late into the night and early morning which was so helpful.

Solar eclipse. Tent camping.

Incredibly amazing would not accurately describe the outstanding experience my family and I had camping at Hemlock Hideaway. Lisa and her family were all incredibly welcoming and accommodating. Our car top carrier would not open and they assisted my husband with the right tools and help to get it opened and functional again. We camped for the once in a lifetime celestial event, but even if it has been raining for the complete solar eclipse, we would not have regretted spending the weekend camping here. The property was lovely, my kids lives hiking in the creek and looking at the chickens and just running around. Highly recommend! We hope to plan another trip.

Awesome views!

I booked at last minute but the host was gracious to get me in! The cabin was so inviting and the wood stove was just awesome. It rained most of the time but the views to the grand River were great! Will be back hopefully dry weather to hike down to the bottom!

It was everything I needed it to be. Secluded, quiet, and it smelled like a campfire as soon as you walk in. I just wish it wasn’t raining outside so I could enjoy the porch swing! I’ll defininitely be back when it gets warmer outside.
