In the middle of the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument; adjacent to Bryce Canyon National Park; within walking distance of Kodachrome Basin State Park; and an easy drive to Zion and Capital Reef National Parks, as well as Lake Powell National Recreational Area, this unique site is an opportunity not to miss. The pet/horse friendly property (approximately 9 acres/3 ha/64 sq. m) boasts private designated single tent sites, and a mix car camping and larger RV sites, as well as paleontological, geological, biological, astronomical, and historical interests of the ranch. The equestrians will find three paddocks, a round pen, as well as beautiful places to ride from the ranch. This secluded location has a small town of Cannonville Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument Visitor Center. And, bonus, the in town campground has: high speed internet, and cell phone service and laundry. This ranch and campground is an off the grid, passive/active solar voltaic, so no electricity, no internet and only Verizon works here. In Tropic 12 miles distant all carriers get service. Potable water, shower, dish washing station and composting toilet (This means that all campers count when booking, even the kids...their poops add up too). The views are spectacular from any site where the xeroscaped landscape uses indigenous material and plants to complement the quintessential Pinon/Juniper ecosystem the campground sits in. On three sides you are surrounded by red cliffs in the Carmel Formation which can give shelter from wind and sun, but campers can also look out over the Paria River (you can hear the river from camp as well as its amphibians) which runs south in front of the property and eventually meets the Colorado River at Lee’s Ferry where most put-in to raft the Grand Canyon. Looking north, one sees the meaning of the term “Grand Staircase” by viewing The Entrada, Tropic Shale, Straight Cliffs, Wahweap, Kaiparowits, and Pink Limestone Formations capped by late Tertiary Volcanism; or, the “steps” of Promise Rock, Sand Point, Powell Point, and the Aquarius Plateau (highest forested mesa in North America at over eleven thousand feet.). The biological diversity here is also astounding: Birds: 140 species and counting including the tiny Costa’s Humming Bird all the way up to the enormous California Condor. Plants: 2 species of Sagebrush, 4 species of trees, numerous grass species, and a plethora of beautiful wildflowers and cacti. Reptiles: Many species of snakes and lizards. Unfortunately, this includes the occasional rattlesnake. It is advised that you have your pets vaccinated. Amphibian: Toads and Salamanders Insects: There are very few mosquitos. There are a few biting Deer Flies, and worse yet, those damn gnats. These “no-see-ums” are temperature dependent so are not a bother in the shade, early mornings, late evenings and at night. It is recommended that you bring some kick ass insect repellant and a “bee hat” if you are out and about in the sun during the day between May and July. Fossils: Bivalves, snails, petrified wood (many types) and various other corals, insects and plant fossils abound and are often incorporated into the ranch infrastructure. The nearby area is considered the hottest paleontological spot on the planet. Astronomy: The area is widely considered to be under the darkest skies in the lower 49. The Milky Way and Presides are common sights without the unsightly annoyance of any neighbor’s lights. The climate is varied and interesting. All four seasons are here and occasionally all in one day. Winter snows melt quickly though temperatures can dip into the sub-zeros. The 5,900 ft./1800 m. elevation keeps the summer temps reasonable and always gives a chilly summer evening to cool things off. If you want climatic extremes, you can, within an hour or so, be at Lake Powell and its 100+ F/38+ C heat or on the Aquarius Plateau at 65 degrees F/18 C in midday June. Recreation on many levels is all within proximity. From canyoneering, “free” climbing on an established nearby crag composed of a welded tuff capping the Aquarius Plateau (see Mountain Project and “The Aquarius Plateau”) and many aid lines on Entrada Formation towers within walking distance (see Mountain Project and “The Grand Staircase”), water sports of Lake Powell and the Colorado River as well as fishing in the cool temps of Pine Lake 35 minutes distant. Then of course, there is the Monument, National Park and the State Park only a short drive away. Seclusion, security, water, and views all within a short walk or drive of exiting destinations, make this worth the stop.

Nice, level sites with great infrastructure and even better views! Bathrooms, showers and laundry were recently updated, clean and easy to use. The staff were extremely helpful and accommodating to a last-minute site change. There’s a wellness center on-site with a sauna - highly recommend after a chilly day of winter hiking!

The site itself was wonderful. Unfortunately, the water was shut off and we weren't notified in advance that there wouldn't be water. There was also a check-out discrepancy, the app said noon, so we were planning for noon. At around 11:30 a gentleman came and told us we had to leave because checkout was a 11. I said that the app said noon and he said that the paperwork we received said 11am. I would think that the app, from which I booked from, should be consistent with the paperwork. Honestly, we didn't use the paperwork except for the directions to our site. So that's on us.

The spot at Page Lake Powell's was ideal for a base camp in northern Arizona. The campground is close to many outdoor activities. The sites were too close together, but thankfully there were open spots right next to us. The campground host got us a fire pit, which was really nice! The downside was being right by the sewage dump.

Paria Ranch was a lovely place to stay. The folks there were very friendly, the bathhouse was wonderfully clean with great showers. The location is great for access to multiple parks and hiking/trail riding areas.

This was our first experience with HipCamp and Roy set the bar high! He greeted us upon our arrival to personally show us around his property. As there weren’t too many people there that night he gave us some options for sites that would best suit our needs. The site was well equipped with stump seats and a nicely constructed fire pit in addition to being private from others. We were also happy to meet his sweet dogs and welcoming rescued donkeys. We would definitely stay here again!

While I would recommend this park, it is for sale and down about a 2 mile dirt road. Of our 3 night stay, there was only one other camper for 2 nights. The park was well maintained with level, spacious sites. Each site had a nice fire pit and picnic table. There were no amenities - no office, no camp host, no showers and toilets.

What a great spot! The bath house is super nice -- running water, including 12 minute hot showers included with stay! There's also free laundry if you're staying and a nice big sink that I used to do dishes. A hangout area and tons of outlets for charging up electronics, couch and some tables/chairs, free wifi, and a microwave -- felt like I was glamping! I will definitely recommend this place to others! I will say, the tent camping spots while flat did not appear super level so just be aware of that. Great location close to many things in Grand Staircase as well!

We absolutely LOVED staying at Roy's Ranch. We camped at afew places after staying here and Roy's was easily our favourite. He gave us a tour when we first arrived, we met the donkeys and his amazing dogs. It had everything you needed and we loved the loo with a view. The views from our site we're incredible. Couldn't recommend more.

An absolutely stunning place full of gorgeous scenery and beautiful recreation opportunities. It’s pretty rugged and a lot of areas need an AWD or 4WD vehicle to access. Very much worth the effort, though.

A Hidden Treasure of the American Southwest

Visiting Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument was one of the most awe-inspiring experiences of my travels throughout the Southwest. The landscape is absolutely stunning-towering cliffs, colorful slot canyons, natural arches, and wide open desert skies that make you feel like you're walking through a living painting. Unlike some of the more crowded national parks Escalante feels wild and untouched. We hiked through narrow canyons like Peek-a-Boo and Spooky Gulch, discovered hidden waterfalls and marveled at the endless layers o frock that tell Earth's story over millions of years. There's a quiet magic here, a sense of space and solitude that's hard to find elsewhere. If you're looking for adventure, natural beauty, and a deeper connection to the land, Escalante delivers in every way. Highly recommended for hikers, photographers, and anyone who craves the raw beauty of the American wilderness. Just be sure to bring plenty of water, a good map, and a sense of wonder.

Calf Creek Recreation Area Campground

This spot has drinking water right near the trail. It's located right next to the river, so it has shade. It is not very private - the world comes here to hike Lower Calf Creek Falls and there is a lot of traffic, vehicular and human. That said, it has amenities such as flushable toilets and a good location close to Escalante and roads to sights.

Great place for exploring scenic byway 12, preferred this wee camp to the more popular Calf Creek campsite on the other side of Boulder. Easier to get a site here even though there are less spots than Calf Creek, peaceful, laid back and friendly, cute little campsites and toilets, from memory water too as it is right near the creek. No falls here like at Calf Creek but you can get up early and buy a coffee in Boulder to brace you for an early morning walk to the Calf Creek falls which is a short drive away. You are also close to the BurrTrail switchback and the Hells backbone road, great if you like a bit of an off road thrill. And you can splurge at the lovely Hells Backbone Grill in Boulder especially their amazing cocktails.

Camped here on our annual spring road trip to Southern Utah. Cute campground on the creek with a river crossing. Access to the short hike to the falls right in the campground. What is great about Escalante National Monument is that is dog friendly! This spot was a great campground right in the middle of the park. Access to many other hiking spots and the river nearby. Wildflowers were amazing in late April!
