Gallo Campground

Location is beautiful and convenient. The drive into the park can be harrowing.... not a clearance issue but I drive a cargo van and the suspension is not made for wash board roads. The park is completely paved. April the nights are pretty frigid and there was no hot water in the restrooms, but the campground is pretty and well maintained. If you are at the visitor center at 9 am you should be able to get a first come site. they have three available. It is only good for 24 hours at a time but you can go back at 9 am the next day a try to get another night.

Chaco NP was truly an unexpected gem! The sites are truly one of a kind and the hiking trails amazing! Get there early to take advantage of all the trails (which are many) and enjoy a full day's worth of walking and site seeing! Visitor Center is a must to get maps, see history of Chaco NP, talk to Park Ragers, see daily itinerary of tours, buy souvenirs and much more!

So much to see and learn about in this remote, sacred place, and many opportunities for hiking (pack sun protection and tons of water!).

Very hot and very little shade/trees that provided shade in the middle of August. Otherwise, very beautiful and interesting to see and learn about the culture and area.

One of the most unique and extensive examples of ancient Pueblo culture.

Very interesting, educational and beautiful site. We took a hike which would have been great if the wind hadn't been blowing so hard.

Chaco is an amazing and important site to see. It was the main reason for us staying at The camp site.

Must see this place but plan to stay all day.

Fascinating to explore the dwellings and consider the people who came there to trade, worship and socialize.

Chaco Canyon

But beware of the road. It’s a shame it can’t be better maintained.

Gallo Campground

Very disappointed they have done away with tent only sites. They say it is because of possible rock falls. But if you have ever been to Chaco...that is a possibility almost anywhere Really have no desire to tent next to huge RV belching noxious fumes.... what a shame. Camping the best way to experience Chaco

Gallo Campground

While one of the two bathroom structures is under construction, there are no reserved sites. Best availability is at 11:00 checkout. We were there mid week in May. All RV sites were taken by 1:30. Go to the campground first, pick your site and then go to the visitor center to pay the fee.

Chaco Culture National Historic Park, containing remnants of a massive ancient (850 – 1250 A.D.) civilization, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and International Dark Sky Park. We viewed amazing night skies, including the Milky Way, and spent the next day exploring the Chacoan pueblo remains. The Chacoans are known for their pre-planned and advanced building techniques. Their structures were often oriented in the director of solar, lunar, or other astrological events.
