My parents bought the 120 acre property in the 1960s. I started clearing and building the campsite in 2019. Watch the sun rise on one side of Troublesome Gap and watch it set on the other side. There is a circle drive for 2 teardrop / squaredrop or pop up campers and plenty of spots to pitch tents. There are also great spots to hang your hammock. Camp where my family camps. My parents bought the property in the 1960s and we have camped up here, hiked, hunted, and cut firewood many weekends. We decided to share the property so you can enjoy camping up here too! The property is in a remote location where you can enjoy the wildlife and the cooler temps in the summer. You'll have 3 acres all to yourself. You wont have to share the spot with anyone else unless you bring them. The closest grocery store is an hour away but the Trust General Store with a restaurant and gas approximately is 7 miles away. There is also a burger joint (Dave's 209) on the way to the Trust General Store. This camping site is in a remote area and the nearest neighbor about 1/2 mile away. Max Patch is about 25 minutes away and features beautiful hiking. The quaint town of Marshall is about 30 minutes away. Asheville is about an hour away. The campsite is easily accessible from Baltimore Branch Road. However Baltimore Brand Road (public road) is steep in places and we don't recommend an RV bigger than a popup camper. If you are pulling a trailer you'll really want to consider having 4wd. If you aren't used to driving on steep dirt mountain roads, you may want to bring your 4wd vehicle. If you have a 2wd vehicle, then you'll want to come to the site via Big Pine Road. This route will take you through Walnut, NC We also provide a porta-a-john for your convenience. Once the reservation is made, I'll send out an info sheet with important info like the gate combination. Please let me know if you haven't received the info sheet within a week of making the reservation. The inclusion policy below is from HipCamp corporate. Our policy is much simpler. Be respectful to others and the property and have a good time. This is a campsite where have the whole 3.5 acre property to yourself. You are surrounded by properties that vary from 40 acres to over a hundred acres. You are with the people in your campsite and pretty much no one else. We just want you to have a great time and bring home great stories. It seems like every visitor to Troublesome Gap has a great story. Come camp with us and build your own story. Important Note: Water is only available on the site from May through September. If you camp on the site Oct through April, you'll need to bring your own water. There is a camera on the property. It faces the gate (and away from the campsite). The camera is mounted on the apple tree.Watch the sun rise on one side of Troublesome Gap and watch it set on the other side! There are also great spots to hang your hammock. There is only one campsite available for rent on the property, so no neighbors in a nearby campsite to interrupt your stay. This site is the definition of tranquility! A little slice of heaven. Montie was very quick responding to my questions, and was very helpful and clear with needed information and directions. We tent camped, and the weather didn't cooperate, but still had an amazing time in the peace and tranquility of the mountains. Will definitely be back!

We loved our stay at Troublesome Gap! Such a peaceful and beautiful place to relax and enjoy the nature around you. Loved watching the butterflies! Montie was quick to respond with assistance when we arrived and had trouble locating and unlocking the gate. The information and directions he provided ahead of time was great and quite useful.

Great spot for 3 families. Was a little wet and cold but a fun time was had by all. Can drop back down into town for a quick meal at Dave's or supplies at the General Store. Would go back for sure.

Beautiful spot truly out in the middle of the woods. If you’re looking for picturesque peace and quiet, it’s here. Loved watching the sun rise and set on either side of us, and the drive up was a ton of fun.

Haven for reactive dogs

This site is quiet, and private nestled into the top of a mountain. The sunrises are usually incredible. It’s the perfect escape from the busy world. We love to take our reactive dog here because there are not neighboring dogs or livestock any where near by. This was our 3rd or 4th time and we will continue to go back. It’s a haven for reactive dog owners. We are grateful to Montie, the host for sharing it with us and for not renting out the other sites on his property so that it can remain private. Would highly recommend! Just a note there is almost always a constant breeze which is great in the summer months but makes it extra chilly in the cooler months.

Great spot off the beaten path

This is our second time camping here and it was great again. We will be back again when we are exploring the area next time. The location is private and off the road. The fire pit is great and the area is clean and well taken care of. A hipcamp gem in the area!

We loved this campsite! We came with a big group of friends for my birthday. The site is easy to get to even in a 2wd car. There was enough space for four tents. The amenities like the porta potty, bench around the fire pit, water spigot and electric made camping easy and enjoyable. Highly recommend!

Really fun spot at the top of a mountain. Fairly far from most things so plan appropriately. The water/power/toilet make it pretty luxurious as remote sites go. Despite the trees the sunrise/sunset were pretty amazing. We had trouble with getting dry wood so may consider bringing your own as I suspect it rains pretty often up there. We had 24 hours of amazing sunny weather and then 12 hours of some pretty heavy rain/storms - we were prepared and so enjoyed it all!

Beautiful campsite

What a great spot to get close to nature! The extra amenities were a big plus too. The host, Monte, went above and beyond to help us after we discovered our car would not start upon our departure. He called a neighbor who helped us get on our way. The drive to the site is beautiful so we recommend to take your time getting there. We’ll be a repeat customer.

We really wanted to stay at a place that was isolated so that we could let our dogs run around and it was perfect. Very peaceful we did arrive in torrential downpours, and then we’re in high gust winds for a couple of nights, but it was all part of the experience.

Montie's place came highly recommended for a camp site near Max Patch and was happy I took the advice and stayed there. I arrived late and in inclement weather so I was not able to take advantage of all the site had to offer, but I will stay again soon. I was thankful for there actually being power available, quite the nice little surprise (it is listed as an amenity, I just did not pay it attention when booking). Montie is responsive and helpful and I look forward to staying again soon when the weather is more favorable.

Nice, private campsite. VERY private. And very steep to get up to!! Didn’t have any trouble in my 2wd but definitely wasn’t expecting to go up to the very top of a mountain! Montie is very helpful and the campsite was well maintained, quiet, and beautiful.

My girlfriend, her dog, and I headed out troublesome gap where we encountered all manner of inclement weather, but we were well prepared and had wonderful time. The campsite feels like a gem you’d find off a forest rd with great sunrise/sunset views and good star gazing overhead. The privacy was great. Sometimes hipcamps feel a little too close to the rest of the world. This one did not. Montie did a great job communicating with us to let us know how to access the properties/amenitites
