Primitive camping
Best for self-contained campers. There are no toilets, showers, or potable water at this Hipcamp.
Enjoy this private dry camping site located 2 miles from Rockhound State Park with native creosote bush and yucca scattered throughout the landscape and towering views of the Florida Mountains and Dragon Ridge 1 mile away where you can spot occasional antelope and desert bighorn sheep roaming the peaks. This is ½ an acre all to yourself for tent and RV camping directly off paved Spring Canyon Rd (NM-198) and 1 mile from the Spring Canyon Recreation Area, where there are public restrooms, covered picnic gazebos and trailheads. There are plenty of hiking, mountain biking and rock hounding opportunities in the immediate area! You will be given GPS coordinates, tripometer distance and directions from Spring Canyon Rd. Campfires are allowed but banned during certain times of the year. You can check if there are any fire restrictions at Rockhound State Park at the time of your visit. There are no toilets or water so campers will need to use the bathrooms at nearby Spring Canyon Recreation Area during permissible hours or bring their own. Pack in pack out policy. Since this is a fairly new camp site, guests are allowed to remove small vegetation to make room for their vehicles and camping area but leave any yucca trees and larger bushes intact. Things to do and amenities nearby: -Agates and quartz crystal are in abundance for your discovery at Rockhound State Park with trails, 2 miles away. -Pancho Villa State Park is 20 miles away -Basin Range Geolapidary Museum 3.4 miles away. -3 wineries 9 miles away in Deming: Hatch Chile Winery, New Mexico Vineyards, Luna Rossa Winery. -Trailheads, hiking and animal sighting 1 mile away at the Spring Canyon Recreation Area. -Bring your binoculars for bird watching November through May and see Scaled Quail, Eurasian Collared-Dove, Cactus Wren, Brewer’s Sparrow, Say’s Phoebe, and Curve-billed Thrashers.

Rockhound Basecamp
A little slice of heaven under the
We had a great stay at Rockhound Basecamp. The weather was perfect, we found a nice level area to park. This location was very close to Rockhound State Park where we wanted to go but couldn't find a campsite there. Kevin was very helpful with directions since there aren't any signs. Look for the two karins at the wash and the camping area is right after it. The road is in the middle of the Hipcamp site. We chose to go to the right. The view of the Cedar Mountains and Spring Canyon around us was amazing especially at sunset. And don't forget to look down you might find an amazing rock or two. A low clearance vehicle or long trailer might bottom out at the wash before getting onto the site so check it out before crossing. The site has not been developed. You find your own path among the landscape. Fantastic place for star gazing too.
