The 100-year-old tree was once the main support for the treehouse. Over time, it leaned away and gradually fell to the ground, where it now rests quite contentedly in the alley, still producing its familiar crown like some extraordinary backyard plant—very much alive and enjoying its old age, much like me. I rebuilt the treehouse with a new support system that doesn't rely on trees, while keeping it nestled among them, because that's where it belongs and where it has always fit in so well. I placed a cot on the upper level of the treehouse for the solo traveler who enjoys a more rustic accommodation while exploring the wonderful town of Arcata. All you need is a sleeping bag and the ability to climb a vertical ladder to reach the cot, where you'll sleep 8 feet above the ground, surrounded by nature. The remaining amenities are on the ground level, including a place to wash up in the morning, a hot shower if desired, a nearby WC, and a relaxing spot in the beautifully landscaped backyard before heading out to explore downtown Arcata, with its many coffee shops and restaurants, or taking a walk through Arcata Redwood Park. Both are just a 15-minute walk away.A comfy spot in the trees
