This land has passed through many families but was first "managed" by Salish Indians who burned the prairie and harvested native plants for food, medicine, clothing, charms and more for 10,000 years. When European settlers arrived in the 1850s, burning the prairie all but ceased and that, along with the introduction of many new exotic species of animals, crop plants and weeds, began the degradation of the landscape. Over time our site was used to graze sheep and then raise pheasants (from 1944-1999). It was slated for housing development but several citizens rose up and prevented that from happening. Now the Pacific Rim Institute, a private nonprofit organization is the steward of this precious jewel of central Whidbey and the Pacific Northwest. We have a five-acre remnant prairie with over 80 species of native plants - critical to the restoration of degraded lands throughout the Salish Sea region. We have over two miles of walking trails for you. They traverse our prairie, savannas and forests. The land is full of color when the native wildflowers bloom from early spring through early autumn. We have a Native Plant Center where we grow up to 50 species of rare native plants. Ask us for a tour.

We are located 6 miles south of "downtown" Chimacum which is the home to the Chimacum Corner Farmstand (the best natural foods/organic grocery store in the world), and Finnriver Farm and Cidery (a lovely family-friendly place!). Our farm is a convenient spot to launch off of for your Olympic National Park adventure! Our farm is a convenient spot to launch off of for your Olympic National Park adventure! There are some insanely beautiful hikes nearby and we are about 2 1/2 hours away from the coast. We are right off the main highway which means you will unfortunately hear some car noise mixed in with the birds and goats, but bring some musical instruments and you won't notice a thing! Our campsite is a grassy patch down in the valley nestled under a large spruce tree next to a goat pasture. If our male goat is in that pasture, you may get occasional goaty smells, but that is just part of the farm life :) We have a picnic table, chairs, fire pit, electrical outlets, and a porta-potty available a short walk away for campers to use. Your campsite is the only one on the property. You may see us farmers going about our daily tasks, but we will make sure you have your privacy.

The site has a 30 amp hook up (as well as a 50A hookup option or 20A outlet for any other appliances that may need to be plugged in). When you come down the driveway, you take a right at the first fork to drive into the large graveled parking lot, where you will find the designated parking spot against the North side of the barn. There is (1) sani-can unit (toilet) that is serviced monthly available for use, and a sink for handwashing and an additional fresh water supply. The metal trash bin next to the sani-can is for your use - please do not use any other trash cans in or outside of the barn as these are for events only. You will also find a wood firepit and chairs available for use right beside your site. Please bring your own wood to, or feel free to purchase wood through this listing. Also feel free to enjoy the covered seating area alongside the west side of the barn, overlooking the animals, gardens and expansive valley view! We are also situated less than a 10-minute drive away from an easily accessible dump station in Port Ludlow, on the way to the Hood Canal Bridge. Please understand that we are a working farm that hosts businesses and other visitors. You will most likely see us and perhaps other guests during your stay! Our home is further down the driveway (to the south of the barn) and we have land mates and an Airbnb unit attached to our house. You will likely hear the sounds of farm projects, animals and people at times. We also live off the busy Beaver Valley road, making us an ideal location for access to the greater Peninsula, but also please know that you may notice road noise at times during your stay with us. We are not in a remote area that is completely silent - we are a bustling farm in a happening place. If you are seeking somewhere very remote without a lot of noise, projects or people coming and going, our site is sadly not for you. This is just the reality of our situation and we always want to make sure our guests know what to expect. That said, this also makes for an exciting, immersive experience if you're looking to connect with the bustling farming and food culture in our region! We had two lovely nights. The farm has an incredible tropical greenhouse as well as humorous, friendly goats. We explored the farm, went on walks and relaxed at our campsite. It's only about 20 minutes to Port Townsend. We walked through the historic district and Fort Worden, then came back to our campsite to chill. This spot is really unique. It's just off the highway but feels like it's miles into the country. Bonus that it only has one spot so we had the farm to ourselves. We'll definitely be returning!

This spot is unique—sleeping in a converted pheasant brooding house and being able to explore the acreage was cool. It’s also nice to feel connected in some way to the mission of Pacific Rim Institute. Three slight drawbacks. 1) Practically no shade. There’s one tree at the head of the brooding house row. Other than that, you chase the rotating shadow of the shack or spend a few hours in the forest. Maybe use the afternoon to visit Fort Ebey or Rhododendron Park (both close). Around here, no shade is usually no biggie. But when I was there in August with direct afternoon sun on the south side, it was tough. 2) The shower room was not cleaned and was unusable.

Wildwood Farms - Olympics Area We stayed here from 8/9-8/10 (Sat-Sun) and had such a lovely experience. Mary and Pete, the hosts, were incredibly sweet and welcoming. Our one-night stay at this beautiful Olympic-area campsite was peaceful, scenic, and well worth the visit. We loved the never-ending water faucet--supposedly the cleanest water around--paired with a gorgeous mountain view. The site came with camping chairs and a fire pit (though we couldn't use the fire pit due to seasonal burn restrictions). We especially enjoyed watching the friendly chickens roam around. Mary mentioned they're about 4 years old and still laying 6-7 eggs per 15 chickens--very impressive! Their eggs ($6/dozen) had deep yellow, vibrant yolks that were clearly organic and fresh. Yes, the chickens can be a little chatty in the morning, but it added to the charm for us. The port-a-potty was far nicer than average thanks to the scents and care Mary and Pete put into maintaining it--truly appreciated! It came stocked with toilet paper, and the water faucet (with a blue handle) was easy enough to operate once you got the hang of it. Just remember to bring your own soap or dish soap, as those aren't provided. We stayed at Campsite One, which was spacious enough for 6-8 people and offered a fantastic value. Between the friendly hosts, fresh eggs, mountain views, and peaceful farm atmosphere, this was one of the best campsites we've enjoyed--and we'd happily return.

What a fantastic place to reconnect with nature. Walking the paths through the fields and forest at sunrise and sunset was absolutely everything. The little hut was charming and access to simple amenities was great. Fair warning, Monday through Thursday be prepared for the appalling screams of war machines overhead practically non-stop but weekends are a delight (host did provide a heads up so went into it knowing that was a possibility) will definitely visit for a weekend again!
