Located just 7 miles from the entrance to Big Bend National Park, and 10 miles from the visitors' center at Big Bend Ranch State Park, it is a perfect base from which to explore all the hiking, boating, and scenic beauty that West Texas is known for. The arts, history, and entertainment of Terlingua Ghost Town are less than 2 miles away. Like most ruins in the Ghost Town, my stone house was built in the early 1900s to house a miner’s family from the nearby Rainbow Mine. I bought the property in 1986 and began restoring and rebuilding. In 2019 I retired here from NYC and began exploring possibilities for sustainable tourism. West Texas is one of the best places in the United States to view the Milky Way (both Big Bend parks are certified as International Dark Sky parks). We use shielded LED lighting around buildings and pathways to cut down on light pollution and optimize stargazing opportunities for our astrotourists. And we are applying for dark sky certification from the Texan By Nature program. Bear in mind that this is the desert, in all its rugged glory. There are critters, rocks, plants with thorns, slippery slopes, sink holes, rusted artifacts and broken glass from decades long past. Bring sturdy shoes and a flashlight, and stay on the paths! Our intention is to provide remote, low-density accommodation for folks who are respectful of the land.

The Off Grid Dome shelter is accepting rental guests to share the off-grid experience, and to also help fund this project and future projects . The dome is a very remote and unique space in the desert near Big Bend National Park. The dome rests in an isolated but easily accessible off-grid setting in one of the few remaining territories under a dark sky ordinance, which offers unmatched views of the night sky, and a completely unobstructed view of a horizon that delivers truly majestic sunrises and sunsets. Though the dome is isolated, the entrance to Big Bend National Park is just a 25 minute drive and the historic Terlingua Ghost town about the same. The dome is an earthen structure, with a cob (adobe) barrier to provide shelter from the desert elements such as heat, cold, winds, and rain. The small but functional dome kitchen provides a two burner propane stove and oven, as well as a refrigerator that is powered by solar power. In fact, all power to the dome comes directly from a modest solar energy system and will power phones, laptops, and lights, but not much more (no hair dryers for instance). The kitchen sink pumps water from a small rain collection cistern and thus I ask guests to be very strategic with water use. Guests are recommended to bring one's own drinking water, although backup bottled water is provided onsite as a backup at cost. The Dome bed sleeps two comfortably. Linens, pillows, and a blanket (and a duvet in colder months are provided for the main bed. The pallet couch does sleep a third person quite comfortably, but guests must bring their own linens or sleeping bag (and pillow) for a third guest. In hotter months, a fan is provided, and the nature of the thick adobe provides a buffer against the Summer temps (with limitations). The wrap around windows provides a good cross breeze and fresh air when needed. In cooler months, a small propane heater is provided for a little extra boost, as well as clean linens and a duvet cover. The dome and linens will not be cleaned during your stay. There is no flush toilet, and so you must be comfortable using a composting toilet that is in a separate, and private outhouse next to the dome. There is no shower on site, but I can give you recommendations for $2 coin showers in town. Or you can try an outdoor solar bag shower on the property. There is wifi on site. The property is very accessible by road, with only the last mile being on a gravel road in good condition. Read house rules to learn about amenities. SUMMERTIME DISCLAIMER (June through September): The Summer can get hot here in the desert and while the adobe dome gives a good buffer against the outside elements, there is no AC in the dome, just a fan. There are also perimeter windows to entice a night breeze. Also, bugs and other desert creatures tend to culminate in the Summer months. Don’t be surprised if you encounter a scorpion or black widow spider and don’t be frightened either as they are relatively harmless and non-threatening. I do have the dome on a somewhat forgiving 5 night out cancelation policy during off-peak periods and so if the 10 day forecast looks too scary for you, you can cancel without penalty. Many say that Summer is their favorite time of the year out here. But it all depends on one's heat tolerance. 4 nights at Crows Peak Tents

ANOTHER AMAZING TIME AT CROWS PEAK! The stars at night are big and bright, at Crows Peak! On our very last night I was standing on the porch of the tent when I encountered some of those “marfa lights”. I was absolutely stunned. This beautiful piece of land is truly special. Thanks to Jimmi and Abbey, we will be coming back soon to stay at our favorite Terlingua Place!

Weekend Trip to Domeland

I booked this stay to get away from day-to-day life and reconnect with nature, and it was everything I hoped for and more. The location is breathtaking — remote enough to feel alone under the endless Texas sky, yet close to both Big Bend National and State Parks. The dome is stunning and thoughtfully designed, and the property itself is beautiful. You can see the desert stretch out for miles, and even though there are a few neighbors, it still feels private and peaceful. Inside everything was clean and cozy, and I quickly became obsessed with the one-mile loop trail on the property, walking it multiple times because it was truly that lovely. The sunsets and sunrises were out of this world, not to mention the view of the stars. I cooked on the camp stove (there’s also a charcoal grill so bring charcoal if you’d like to use it) and loved the calm of being offline. The host was very communicative, and the instructions were clear. Just keep in mind it’s the desert: water is precious, so bring extra and use mindfully. The kitchen has the basics, but bringing your favorite gear is helpful. There’s WiFi inside the Dome but no cell service, so recommend downloading local maps before you go. If you want extra light it doesn’t hurt to bring some nice battery powered lights. It wasn’t an issue but would’ve been a nice touch. Weekend Trip to Temple of the Bird

I stayed over the weekend with a friend (M27, M32) TTOTB was a fantastic vibe- home comforts in a desert setting. The host, Mike- went out of his way to make sure we had a great time both at camp as well as some great bars in the nearby town. Amazing stars at night, and most weeks there is usually something going on for those who like a social vibe. We stayed in the container, no complaints at all. Will be coming back one day!

4 nights at Temple of the Bird

We had a nonstop wonderful stay at Mike’s “Temple of the Bird”. We were there as part of the Terlingua Music Bash so there were lots of people around but the communal kitchen and bathrooms stayed clean and well supplied. The bathrooms are also incredibly beautiful with large stone showers and plenty of entertaining signs in the stalls. The multiple common areas are versatile and accommodating. Every space on the property has been lovingly “accessorized”. Willy and the bird rule.. We stayed in a container room. It far exceeded our expectations. It was very well put together and we could see the sunrise over the mountains from our windows. The bed was comfortable and the room was surprisingly spacious. The AC worked! All of this in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Five stars for Mike!

Badass place the camp in the desert! We got to cook dinner on the BlackStone, clean up in the nice clean outdoor shower, and watch the amazing stars by the larger firepit.

Nice cozy, cool, getaway from the heat. It’s a blast to step out the door and be surrounded by music and amazing people and kind hosts. Showers and shared kitchen are clean and wonderfully functional. Fabulously fun location!

Weekend Trip to Temple of the Bird

Staying at the Temple of the Bird is a truly singular experience. The beauty of the landscape is on full display and you’re only a stones throw away from all the fun places in the ghost town. The left wing room is in a repurposed cargo container and has all the luxuries you should expect smack in the middle of the desert. A/C, comfortable Queen size bed, sitting area, armoire, cute little porch sitting area. I highly recommend it. This will be where I will try to stay every time I visit Terlingua.

I could not recommend this place enough! Mike goes above and beyond for his guests and you can tell the whole space is such a passion project. Mike’s love for Terlingua made me love Terlingua and I can’t wait to come back. If you’re looking for beautiful views in a space that was built to encourage community you’re gonna wanna stop in at the Temple of the Bird. Everything was also super clean ✨

The best experience I ever had! Jim is very welcoming and friendly. The cabin he built is stuffed with love and intention. Everything is so thoughtful and well made. If you go there, you have to watch the night sky! It is beyond comprehension. Suited for 2, perfect for 4, maybe a little narrow for 6. Bring enough water and supplies. Thoughtful use of resources like water and electricity is mandatory.

Bryn's property has stunning views of the Chisos mountains. This campsite is perfect for campers new to the desert or solo travelers who want a feeling of security, as Bryn is close by. The hot shower is a definite plus! We enjoyed visiting with Bryn and listening to her deeply moving songs and guitar playing.

Glamping at Cieloscuro was an unforgettable experience! The location is perfect for adventure and relaxation, offering stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere. Karen is a fantastic host with great recommendations for dining and exploring—be sure to take the advice of a local! Big Bend National Park is just a short drive away, making day trips easy, and the nearby town of Terlingua is full of charm and character that shouldn't be missed. Her dog Mojo is awesome and super friendly.

3 nights at Camp Leapin’ Lizard

This was an incredible experience. The listing is exactly as describe if not better (I felt welcomed, safe, and secluded all at the same time) It’s location is perfect distance to Big Bend and down town Terlingua. My stay was 3 days, up early everyday hiking but back to the tent before dark to enjoy a shower, dinner, and sit around the gas fire pit which was perfect. If I ever have a chance to come back, this would be my first choice.

My wife and I really enjoyed our 3 week stay at Casa de Keavany during January. Our host Jim was very attentive and helped provide the local perspective for our activities. If peace, quiet and serenity are what you are looking for, than look no further. The views are spectacular in every direction. The cozy comfy cabin provided all the conveniences we were looking for in this off the grid setting. We love spending time in Big Bend National park and Terlingua and are looking forward to a return trip!

Jim's cabin was as described, and with added comforts including a flush toilet, shower and bed on the lower level so these older bones didn't have to climb a steep stairway each night! Jim was available, helpful and friendly, assisting with any issues that came up.
