Enjoyed my one night stay here, wish I had more time! This is a no-frills, straight forward camping area. I loved the landscape and the super dark night skies. The goats were very entertaining, not to mention photogenic! No amenities, just a great place to spend the night!

One of the most beautiful nights of star seeing I've had in my life. On a night with clear skies this camp sight is one of the most beautiful I've ever been to. The hosts were delightful and brought a fire pit/s'mores and even let us rent an air mattress for the night. 10/10, definitely going to bring my family here for clear weather.

Such a great space! It was an overcast and stormy weekend so I couldn’t enjoy the stars, will definitely be back though. Hosts were so nice and the other campers were very friendly. You still had privacy even with other campers which I really enjoyed.

We were lucky enough to get the skyview spot. It sits at the top of a gorgeous cactus covered hill where a perfectly beaten path leads you down to the river. There you will find the magic of a largely untouched natural paradise. A flat bottom boat with paddles was available that fit our family of four (mom, dad, and kids (8 & 5)). We took two different trips down river and back and we all agreed it was one of the best highlights(of many) from the weekend. We saw turtles and fish, lizards and even a heron. Which brings me to the farm itself. So much entertainment for the kids (adults too, if we’re being honest). They have silly, cactus-eating goats, clucking chickens, white-feathered turkeys, ducks, a young stallion and the sweetest eeyore of a Shetland pony named Charlie Brown. The two dogs that live on the property narrowly avoided being rehomed to Austin with us. They are the most gentle, friendly farm dogs and our children couldn’t get enough of them. Exploring the land was an adventure for the kids. We found animal bones, picked wildflowers, found a ton of interesting insects, chased lizards and especially enjoyed the hidden labyrinth that is almost complete. The stars were beautiful at night and we slept like babies to the sound of the river. This particular location doesn’t have much shade unless you are down by the water, so make sure to bring a shade tent if possible. Lastly, the owners are a such a welcoming and warm family. We cannot wait to return!

Absolutely stunning campsite right next to the river! Exactly the vibes I was looking for...river sounds - check! wildlife sightings - check! private - check! Did some fishing and simply hung out in the river during the hot parts of the day. One of the best sites I've camped at, incredibly clean with flat surfaces and plenty of nature all around. Logan was incredibly helpful explaining how to get to the site and answering questions I had. Look forward to revisiting and staying here again! As others have mentioned, if you're on the fence on booking this...just do it! You won't be dissapointed!

Absolutely loved our stay at this stargazer! The location is stunning—right on the river with peaceful views and plenty of nature to soak in. What really set it apart were the extras they offered: they offer massages, and we booked one with Logan, the host. Hands down one of the best massages we’ve ever had—so relaxing and grounding after a long day outdoors. The vibe of the whole place is just serene. Friendly goats, sweet dogs who greeted us like old friends, and Logan was such a warm, thoughtful host. If you’re looking for a camping experience that blends nature, comfort, and a bit of wellness, this is the place. Can’t wait to come back!

Low Gear Farmstead is a great place. It's quiet and campsites are spread far apart. The chair massage was wonderful - highly recommend that! I really enjoyed chatting with Logan and her mom, Lois. The whole place felt very peaceful and I would go back for sure.

The most beautiful properly I have ever spent time on. We camped at the stargazing site but took a little walk around with one of the dogs Bjorn as it seemed no one else was around and we wouldn’t be bothering anyone. The river running through the property is incredible. The toilet at the site is just what you need & nothing more (bring your own TP). The best part of the trip was getting to spend time with Bjorn. My dog recently died and Bjorn’s companionship was so welcome. When it rained a bit during the night we let him into the tent and he slept on the floor. He knows a few tricks if you’ve got a treat or two. Bjorn was a great camp host.

I recently stayed at this secluded campsite, and it was an absolute dream. The highlight of the experience was the private river access, where I could relax by the water and enjoy the peaceful sounds of nature. The campsite is incredibly private, making it perfect for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life. The night sky views were nothing short of breathtaking—I've never seen so many stars in one place! It's an ideal spot for stargazing, and the tranquility of the surroundings made it even more magical. We have been to this property several times and have stayed at a couple of their sites. Our favorite one by far is river view. The walk down to wade in the water only takes a few minutes. You also have a beautiful view of the water from the site and get to hear the water rippling at night while you snuggle up in your tent. It’s so peaceful and the hosts are always so responsive and helpful to accommodate all your needs. Will be back again!!

Great place !! Wife and i got the Skyview spot and the stars at night were amazing ! Sadly it was super windy that day so there were loads of dust blowing from the spot. Super primitive spots , with outhouse and besr part it was right next to the river ! Cold and enjoyable! They have aome farm animals along with doggies that passed by to say hi .

This was such a nice place! Beautiful land. Hosts were very friendly and helpful. My car battery died and they kindly came to our site and jumped us. Their sweet dog also came and hung out with us for the evening!! Would definitely come back and definitely recommend to others!

We love staying at Lowgear. The river offers cool fun, fishing, boating, swimming. Lots of areas to investigate and enjoy birdwatching walks. Friendly helpful host, Logan and Gear will make you very welcome and share their local knowledge. Menard has a public pool open in summer and Menard Station offers cheap ice, water and coffee for a donation. A great place to unwind.

Amazing location! 10/10 would recommend! Really got to appreciate nature and the stars at night and the hosts were very friendly! The camp site has a nice sandpit to set up the tent, a trashcan, a small table and a fire pit.

Get into low gear and enjoy the slow pace and peace of our little working farm on the edge of the hill country. Low Gear Farmstead's 75 acres border the lovely San Saba River, providing campers the opportunity to swim, wade, fish and paddle. Farm animals including dairy goats, chickens, and horses inhabit the property, but wildlife such as deer, wild turkey, ringtail, fox and armadillo is also abundant. Bird watchers will be delighted at the diversity of birds, especially in spring. Don't forget to look up at night as our dark skies provide excellent stargazing on clear nights and a very visible Milky Way. We limit the number of campsites and spread them out so that campers may enjoy privacy and seclusion. Campsites are provided with compost toilets and most sites also have a fire ring. 4WD is not required unless we have had heavy rains, otherwise most vehicles, except very low clearance ones, do fine. The nearest town, Menard, is about a 12 minute drive from the property and has a grocery store, gas stations, a couple restaurants, a pub and a bakery. Lovers of history might enjoy visiting the Presidio de San Saba, about 20 minutes from the farm, as well as the historic Pioneers Rest Cemetery in town. Low Gear Farmstead is a safe, welcoming space for queers and POC.
