We're a five acre piece of an historic Texas ranch in Southwest San Antonio, just 20-minutes from downtown, sitting along the Medina River. Come for the day or stay the night for some primitive camping. We've got plenty of room for tents, roof-top-tent setups or car/van dry-camping. We’re currently in the building/restoring process, but we’ll have some electrical, drinking water, fire pits, plenty of shade, compost toilets, water in the river, and plenty of good vibes.  Old Herrera Ranch has been in our family since the early 1800's and holds a lot history. A couple of our old buildings, the "jacals", are dated from around the 1830-40's. You'll also see the old "Dance Hall" which is great for hanging out or even some cover if it rains. They say that Santa Anna's army, invading from Mexico, may have crossed through our area on their way to the Alamo. This may be because our part of the river includes some of the more shallow areas of the Medina River. Come and stay at our four acre riverfront property right on the Guadalupe! Half of the property is at higher elevation, with a nice sunset vista and breezy camping spots. Parking is also located up here. A short walk down a gated ravine takes you to the lower-leveled riverfront part of the property. This area offers 1-2 camping spots on a wooden deck, and 2-3 camping spots on the rock/concrete pavilion overlooking the fire pit and benches. The riverfront amenities include a gas grill, a cooler, a fire pit (firewood included but always subject to a burn ban), and well water for a hose shower (not for drinking). There is well water on the upper part of the property as well. No fires are permitted up top. Enjoy the views up top and the amenities down below. Set up your camp wherever works best for you! Note: There is no electricity or bathrooms on the property. Please pack out what you pack in. We rent the entire property to one person/reservation at a time. Up to 10 people on the property allowed or $25 per extra person. Cast a line in the Guadalupe and enjoy the bass and catfish fishing — If you're interested in a fishing guide for a 2-3 hour morning run, the cost is $250.00. The guide will pick you up on the banks of the property around 7am, and you'll be off the water by 10am. Subject to his availability. Feel free to BYO kayak or canoe. Life jackets highly encouraged! The property is on ALT 90, 5 miles east of Diamond A Gas Station and Doss BBQ, in Belmont, Texas. My fiancé asked to go camping for her birthday, and we settled on this place. We showed up in the dark to our tent sight because she wanted to get her hair done that day also (don't ask), and because we weren't familiar with the area, we asked a local sheriff's deputy for directions. He told us where to go, but we accidentally ended up in sight 7 instead of 1 (our fault, it was dark). We realized our mistake the next morning and called the front desk, and they were incredibly kind. We insisted we'd pack up and move, but they didn't care, as nobody else had site 7 booked. We enjoyed a great time of calm walking trails and lovely scenery. My fiancé had never seen a ring-tailed cat, but we saw one fight over a tree with a couple squirrels! (Fun to watch for me). Long story short, this is a great, calm place for RV, camper, and tent sites. Btw, site 7 for tents is the best one. It has a table, water spicket, porta-potty (very clean), and is right next to a trail entrance.

I really enjoyed my stay on Sara's land. There's a road along the campground with intermittent traffic, but despite that, it was quiet and peaceful, even more so at night- exactly what I was looking for. The seating/picnic area next to my campsite was clean and inviting. Deer walked through the campground, which was lovely to see! Sara is a courteous host. I look forward to my next stay.

A solo 2-nighter trying out a new hot tent on Dax's land. It was great. Some road noise from the nearby highway but it settled down into the evening. The Medina River was walking distance and very nice. Dax was very helpful getting it all set up... and the on-site hosts Ciera and Tav were helpful and a very nice couple. I will enjoy returning for a hammock camp on the river!

Dax’s place is wonderful. We basically had the entire campsite to ourselves. We stayed at campsite 2. Years, it’s primitive as in the description, but he and his family’s history are incredible for this stretch of land. They’re are rescue dogs on property off leash, but Dax and his team made sure they were leashed during the duration of our stay to insure our fur baby had THE best time and man did he! Our son and dog played for hours down by the water which is not a bad hike, but such an adventure. Hours were spent by our pup chasing his duck in the water. Our son had enough depth to snorkel which made him ecstatic. A lot of people have made note about the highway noise…the noise was minimal and more ambient white noise than anything. Later in the evening another set of campers arrived and still felt we had the entire place to ourselves. I can not say thank you enough to Dax and his entire team for this adventure. I highly recommend this place! Be sure to bring sanitary wipes for yourself as it is primitive with only a compost toilet for #2.

Dax and this beautiful property never disappoints! Dax is the best and this is the best primitive camping! I’ll say it a million times, the river is such a blessing and our pups love it! After a night roasting hot dogs and marshmallows, it’d be shame not to mention the star gazing… wouldn’t even know you’re only 15min from town. Every time we head south from the PNW, this will always be a for sure stay for us when visiting San Antonio!

Our little slice of heaven… We come south every winter and when we are in San Antonio, there is nowhere else we’d rather stay. There is more than enough room for our fur babes to roam and the river is an added bonus! For primitive camping, the property offers ample space for multiple campers and you still feel like you have your privacy. Dax is a breeze to work with and the most punctual host we’ve ever had when communicating any and all our needs. We’re so grateful to have a place that’s not only beautiful property, it feels safe, like another home, and offers the most incredible views for sunset. In short, a few snowbirds and their two pups love Old Herrera Ranch!
