In the early 1900’s an iconic red barn was built near the hilltop along the road between the old Mt. Zion community and Collinsville. Later in the 1900’s, the land was mostly abandoned by its owners, but not by the local fishermen! They knew its woodland fishing pond never dried up, and so was able to support a better population of fish. They also dumped a cornucopia of old motorcycles, cars and farm equipment in the front field. What else were you supposed to do with scrap metal in North Texas horse country? In 2002 the Holtzman family purchased the 35 acre tract of land. They dug a front pond for swimming and paddling, buried the scrap metal (although occasional bits of history still work their way up!), restored and brought horses back to the barn, and began consulting with local biologists about supporting native wildlife. April Holtzman launched Camp Tonkawa Outdoor Learning Center on the property to provide a beautiful, safe place for families to explore and learn about nature. Camp Tonkawa continues to host overnight and day camps with educational programing organized around various themes including: Native American culture, nature awareness, basic camping skills, primitive survival, organic gardening, herbology, outdoor cooking, western days, and horsemanship. We also host field trips and frequently conduct Girl Scout journeys for all levels in the "It's Your Planet, Love it!" series. Due to Covid-19, which limited working with groups for our educational programing, we joined Hip Camp where families who could isolate in nature together on our property.

We loved this spot! My dog is older now so it was really nice to have him be able to run around in a big field with soft grass. I put his booties on when we walked through the trails. The lake is gorgeous and peaceful, the woods are fun to explore, and the campsite is clean and private. Jamie was so welcoming. We will definitely be back here.

It was nice I like the views and camping was not bad. Showers were scarey because of all the nests, but it was ok. Nice that they brought me wood for the time i needed.

1 night at 4R Ranch Winery Campsite

I loved camping at the 4R Winery! Getting in and out was super easy. The pdf info pack provided on their website was really helpful in picking out the right option for us and having the firewood included in the fee was great. I really appreciate the dispersed camping in a state that is severely lacking. There are two things I would say to be aware of if you are looking to do dispersed camping. 1) The field is large but most of it doesn’t have shade so realistically, spots are a bit limited, and 2) there is nothing between you and other campers so even though there is decent distance between you, you can see and hear everything from neighbors. Also be aware that you are in wind turbine country and when the weather is right, you hear the whoosh whoosh of the blades from the nearest turbine. I got used to it about an hour after laying down to sleep lol. Other than that, it was great. Beautiful land, gorgeous starry sky and nature moving around you. I’d definitely stay there again!

Weekend Trip to Willow Grey Ranch

Lovely spot with shade trees and open, quiet land. We could hear the water fowl and water lapping in the lake behind the camp spot. We didn't see or hear anyone from when we arrived until we left. It was a calm place we needed to pause and reset.

Weekend Trip to 4R Ranch Winery Campsite

We stayed at 4R Ranch Winery for our very first Hipcamp trip, and it couldn’t have been better. The setting was absolutely beautiful — surrounded by rolling hills, vineyards, and incredible views that made every moment feel peaceful and special. Their wine was fantastic, the food was great, and the staff at the tasting room were incredibly friendly and welcoming, making us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. If you’re looking for a scenic getaway with amazing wine, delicious food, and warm hospitality, this place is a must-visit. We can’t wait to come back! 🍷🌿
