The campsite is located in a private property in the outskirts of El Yunque Rainforest in the town of Luquillo. The Sabana River, one of many that originate from El Yunque National Rainforest, the river goes through the property. If you see anything ready for the taking let us know and you can partake in the experience of harvesting and eating it. Bananas, avocados, soursop, guava, fig, calabaza, coffee, name, coconuts, pana pen, and more. Clean filtered mountain water is available for purchase. They went out of their way to make sure we had a safe place to park our 22ft camper van, even letting us in after regular hours, after all our other overnight camping options had fallen through. Great communication and a nice spot in the jungle next to running water and plenty of coquis to sing us to sleep. Will definitely consider coming back for more than just an overnight stay next time!

Awesome secluded location! Yet you're not to far from good food and tons of adventure nearby. Robert and his wife were super nice and accommodating. If your schedule allows it opt for the breakfast on the balcony! During our stay we did stuff all over the island this place is fairly centrally located. Which was perfect for our trip.

We drove a camper van to the location & the host was very accommodating to what we needed for the van. Its a very steep drive so caution when getting there. But sleeping in the forest with the coqui’s and water right next to us was so magical to wake up to!

Weekend Trip to Hacienda Monte Rey near El Yunque

This was our second time camping at Hacienda Monterrey in Luquillo, Puerto Rico, and it’s quickly become one of our favorite places. It’s easy to get to from the main road, but once you’re there, it feels like a peaceful escape into nature. One of the things that makes this place stand out is the host, Gerardo. He’s incredibly kind and attentive — both times we’ve stayed, he personally came by to make sure everything was in order and that we were comfortable. That kind of hospitality really goes a long way and makes the experience even more special. The campground is simple and clean, with no electricity, which actually adds to the relaxing, unplugged vibe. It does have clean restrooms and hot showers, which we really appreciated. Toilet paper is provided (a small detail, but super helpful!), and parking is available and conveniently close. My 9-year-old son told me this is his favorite place in the world right now, and he’s already asking to go back. As a parent, there’s no better review than that. We’ll definitely be returning. If you’re looking for a quiet, family-friendly spot to connect with nature, Hacienda Monterrey is a hidden gem worth discovering.

It was a great experience. The river was beautiful and we explored a lot! Got connected with nature! Good place too relax and have a good time. We brought our own stuff like shower, water, solar lights and a bathroom so we didn’t used the facilities but I will definitely recommend if you want to camp outside bring all your stuff. and If you brought your tent definitely bring a mat or a comforter so u can sleep comfortably in the ground.

2 nights at Casita Mística: Off-Grid Caribbean

This is a beautiful location and perfect camp spot to explore the island, close to Esperanza and Isabella. Have transportation lined up, either a local with good knowledge of the roads, or renting. Taxis are hit or miss. The casita has everything you need, as long as you’re prepared and don’t expect an Airbnb. Bring a headlamp as you’ll probably be walking a bit, don’t mind the rooster, he’s a good neighbor. Enjoy the island life!

Our stay at Hacienda Monte Rey campground was amazing! The host was very attentive and helped us with all our requests to ensure our stay would be enjoyable and fun. We stayed at Las Heliconias campsite which was very close to the river. The bathroom and shower areas were clean and well stocked. The place is very peaceful and we can hear the sounds of many birds and of el Coqui. We ended up renting the bbq grill with the utensils and were able to cook during our stay. The location is perfect, located in the rainforest and close enough to the “civilization.” It’s very close from El Yunque and from the main roads. For e.g. in one of the mornings we decided to get a takeout from El Mesón Sandwichs for breakfast and that took about 15 min to get there.
