Elmlock was named by MJ's Grandfather for the majestic Elm trees that once graced the property and banks of the Tulpehocken Stream passing through the Union Canal lock. These beautiful trees were devastated by the Dutch Elm Disease in the early 20th century.
Elmlock and the surrounding area was surveyed by non other than George Washington as plans were formulating to build a canal system to join the Schuylkill and Susquehanna Rivers.
The General stayed with his friend Captain Michael Lei on the adjacent farm, once known as the Tulpehocken Manor when visiting the area. The ruins of one of the canal locks remains on the Elmlock property adjacent to the camping area.
The 1838 stone farmhouse was built by the Spengler family and acquired by MJ's Grandfather in 1913. MJ's pottery studio is a local "Town Barn" that was relocated piece by piece to Elmlock by MJ"s brother, a Historic Restoration Specialist, in 1974. He also restored the Bake Oven on the property's Summer Kitchen.
Our property features an historic canal lock from 1828 Union Canal and a stream that runs through it.
There is a RR track that runs just south of our camp about 10acres away For campers who love to watch or hear trains you'll have plenty of opportunity to do so!
You can enjoy fishing and playing in the water, which is fresh, clean limestone water from a nearby quarry. We also have two small goats on the property. Farm land surrounds the property, wooded area and cattle nearby. This is a secluded property but less than a mile from Rt 422. You can bike along the many back roads nearby!
We also offer pottery classes, drawing classes, painting classes, and also Medicinal wild plants walk etc. for an additional fee. See our extras below if you are interested!

3 nights at Riverside Hideaway
This is my first cabin camping in a long time and this place is really nice. The cabin is cozy and offers electricity. We are used to bringing our own supplies for camping and we were relieved to see most essentials were supplied. The hot plate and folding table were great for making meals, along with the fire pit.
I really enjoyed the privacy and and hospitality of the host, who gave us the most delicious potatoes and onion from their garden.
There is a train that comes by, but I'm telling you it is nothing that disturbed our stay.

3 nights at Riverside Hideaway
This was a most wonderful experience on a lovely property hosted by such a kind family. We very much enjoyed our two nights there (even in the cold). The cabin is quaint and had all we needed off the grid to really feel disconnected. We highly recommend this space, land, and family welcoming to all tent campers who once in awhile need a comfort space in inclement weather. A blessed place!

Weekend Trip to Riverside Hideaway
My husband and I had a wonderful stay at the cabin! It was cozy, peaceful, and surrounded by beautiful nature. We loved relaxing together in the quiet atmosphere and enjoying the little touches that made the cabin feel so welcoming. A perfect getaway for us to unwind and recharge!

This campsite overlooks a field of apple-loving cows who will come to greet you if you throw some of the fallen apples over the fence. Also apple lovers, the goats (Peter and Piper) are the sweetest kids. If not for my dog’s recent neutering, he would have had a blast with them and the two wonderful dogs on the property. We got a tour of the pottery studio, and MJ’s pottery is incredible! I regret not taking one of her classes.

This was such a unique, picturesque experience. From feeding apples to cows to setting up a telescope for the stars, my partner and I felt so relaxed and fulfilled from our Elmlock Acres experience. The hosts were so gracious and informative, telling us pretty cool lore of this space (no spoilers). The fire spot and sleeping next to the canal was the perfect vibe for what we wanted, with a hammock to top it off. You can tell how much pride they take in the Elmlock Acres experience. Even though we were on the same property as the owners, they did not care about our barking dog and were so up front that noise doesn’t bother them. We also didn’t feel bothered by them. Pretty unique experience would definitely recommend.

I stayed one night with MJ and Jeff and it was a beautiful experience. I ended up having to reschedule my booking due to car troubles and MJ was very helpful with rearranging things. I signed up for MJs pottery class and oh my goodness it was awesome. MJ was a wonderful teacher and very artistic. Thank you MJ and Jeff for all the help and the wonderful evening on the canal. I camped right next to the water in my car and the water flow drowned out the train noises!

We arrived and the fire was started for us. M.J. had an Ozark tent set up with a little table and chairs. A small box on the table had matches, bug defense, darts etc… A night lantern was there as well as a hand full of tiki lights surrounding the edge of the site. On the property is a private camping potty with a curtain. The constant sound of the water was amazing!
