Flannel Dog Farm

3 sites ¡ Lodging, RVs, Tents7 acres ¡ Ashtabula, OH
Located less than a mile from Lake Erie, our 1860's brick farmhouse is an area icon. This seven acre homestead is where we grow our own food, raise sheep, chickens and bees, bake sourdough bread, brew beer and wine, and create art in Copper Leaf Studios. We are a monarch waystation and have several acres dedicated to native pollinators, plants, and trees. Much like our farm's name, our place is warm, welcoming, rustic, and a bit gritty. We are advocates of inclusion, local community, and sustainable living. We love telling and hearing good stories. We believe in the powers of kindness and peace. We hope to share our part of the world with others. We have firewood onsite for HipCamper use. Our breakfast is not to be missed (included for Peace Portal & Covered Wagon sites; optional for tent campers) and features farm fresh & local ingredients. We offer an outhouse with a composting toilet as well as a traditional flushable half bath with running water and power. Pets are welcome. Message us if you have any questions!

Sycamore Lake Elk Ranch

3 sites ¡ Tents105 acres ¡ Jefferson, OH
I’ve had the pleasure of having this land as my playground for many years.  My grandparents purchased the property after WWII.  Initially, it began as a dairy farm and a few years later they opened Sycamore Lake Campground, one of the very first public camping spots in the U.S.  I grew up fishing, hunting, riding tractors and horses here.  Years later I had a vision of starting my own elk ranch and what better place to do so than on my family’s property.  I brought my first load of elk here on my grandmother's 95th birthday in 2010 and in 2014 I was able to purchase the property from my her.  She left us days away from her 101st birthday.  I now reside here at the ranch and the herd has grown to over 50 head.  The ranch is a work in progress and if you become a regular visitor, you will notice changes between each visit.  I'm proud to be able to keep this land in my family and I’m excited to able to share it with all of you. I truly hope you can come and enjoy the natural landscape; of a place I hold dear to me.Learn more about this land:Pitch a tent on a bank of a winding creek or along the private lake.  Abundant wildlife to admire.  Bass fishing and boating steps away from your site.  Small boats along with fishing poles and gear are available for rent.  Enjoy roasting your hotdogs and marshmallows over a campfire at night.  Firewood is for sale.  This is a working elk ranch and tours are available.  Lake Erie is a few miles away.  Wine country and Geneva on the Lake are just moments down the road.

Too Far Out Farm

1 site ¡ RV, TentGuys Mills, PA
Nestled in Pennsylvania Dutch country, between a large dairy farm and the Erie National Wildlife Refuge, Too Far Out Farm is favored for its natural beauty and tranquility. Residents of TFO Farm include horses, sheep, and various other friendlies of the canine and feline varieties. You could set your watch by the neighbors' evening visits: A herd of very social dairy cows, who always seem to mosey on down right around supper time every evening. The primitive campsite will accommodate tents or a small RV. Don't worry about nosey or annoying camp neighbors, because we only book one group at a time - YOURS! The campsite includes a large fire ring, a limited amount of cut and stacked wood, a composting toilet and a small camp table. There is room for a smaller rig if you want to bring your RV, riding horse or ATV. We can accommodate up to six horses in our outdoor round pen as long as they get along with one another. (Sorry, no sheltered stalls or run-in sheds for the horses, as yet.) Trail riding on the back roads of Penn's woods delights many a visitor all four seasons of the year. The farm is within walking distance of hiking and cross-country ski trails that meander through the Erie National Wildlife Refuge. Also, Crawford County's best kept secret for Perch, Walleye and Blue Gill fishing (including ice fishing) is a mile away at Sugar Lake. If you come for the hunting, (in season) let us know in advance and we will help you secure the proper permits and learn the rules of the refuge. Speaking of the wildlife, come armed with your binoculars and a good camera. Common sightings include high and low-flying Bald Eagles and other birds of prey, as well as many varieties of colorful, native song birds. You may also encounter other woodland creatures, such as, White-Tail Deer, Black Bears, Coyotes, and of course, smaller furry critters, like raccoons, fox, squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, beavers, ground hogs and opossum. Be sure to steer clear of the skunks and the porcupines, though! Upon request, farm stewards, Deb and/or Mike Peterson will ride along to guide you on a horseback trail ride on the public back roads (minimal vehicular traffic) surrounding TFO Farm and on the refuge. Lakeside camping in Presque Isle with fishing guide

Overview

It's easy to see why Presque Isle is a National Natural Landmark. The 3,200-acre peninsula is a mesmerizing wild haven jutting from the shores of Erie, Pennsylvania. With year-round recreation options to spare, it's a must-visit on Lake Erie.

Ready to explore Presque Isle State Park? The 13 sandy swimming beaches and 21 miles of trails are a great start. You can also gawk at the pristine shoreline from Peninsula Drive—keep an eye out for the historic lighthouses. Canoeing, biking, inline skating, and hiking are a few other ways to see the park.

The park itself offers no camping since it's day use only. Luckily, the region boasts tons of private RV parks with full hook-ups and campgrounds with tent camping around Erie and Fairview. Fire rings, picnic tables, and even Wi-Fi are a few amenities to enjoy.

Once you've found your home base, discover the calm waters of Presque Isle Bay. The state park's 500-slip marina is ground zero for water skiing, wakeboarding or just cruising while ospreys fly overhead. Trout, muskie, and walleye fishing is also big here, so don't forget your tackle.

For viewing local wildlife, head to Gull Point Natural Area. Situated on the far end of Presque Isle, it's been named one of the best birding spots in the United States. You definitely want to bring your camera and binoculars.

Keep in mind Presque Isle isn't the only park in the area. Just 12 miles west of Erie, you come to Erie Bluffs State Park. Stop here to explore 5+ miles of trails and take in fantastic views from a 90-foot bluff.

While this Lake Erie paradise can get crowded, Memorial Day through Labor Day is still a great time to visit. The weather is warm, and recreation options such as state park rental bikes are still available.

Pennsylvania winters are cold and snowy, meaning many campgrounds are only open seasonally. On the other hand, a heated cabin gives you access to the region's best winter recreation. Ice fishing, cross-country skiing, and wind skating (think kite surfing meets ice skating) are just a few options.
