Secluded Basecamp Beside Hanging Rock State Park (Moore’s Knob / Moore’s Wall) Tucked quietly along the edge of Hanging Rock State Park near the Tory’s Den access, this primitive campsite at 1140 Tomahawk Rd, Westfield, NC puts you right at the doorstep of Moore’s Knob and Moore’s Wall. From the Tory’s Den parking lot, you’ll follow Tory’s Den Road all the way up a rugged dirt road to reach the property. The last stretch is rough and narrow in spots, so you’ll want to be comfortable on mountain dirt roads and ideally have 4WD with some clearance. When you arrive, a roundabout dirt driveway opens into a private clearing with a 20' x 20' flat pad—perfect for tent camping or a small overland setup. The land was recently cleared, so it still has a raw, backcountry feel: expect stumps, roots, and uneven ground around the main flat pad, not a manicured campground. It’s quiet, heavily wooded, and feels like your own little slice of the Sauratown Mountains. The real magic is the access: it’s roughly a 200-yard walk through the woods to reach Moore’s Knob Trail, and you’re less than a mile from the base of Moore’s Wall, with all of Hanging Rock’s views, rock outcrops, and classic hiking right at hand. Wake up, brew coffee, and you can be on the trail to Moore’s Knob in minutes without ever getting back in your vehicle. On the property there is an old, abandoned cabin from a previous era. It is not safe or usable—for your safety and liability reasons, do not enter or touch the cabin or attempt to explore inside. Before the Kerr Scott Reservoir was built, in the 40's and 50's, this neighborhood was a local swimming hole and vacation area. Public buses came from neighboring communities so people could boat, swim, camp, and picnic. While we don't have access to the pond, our part of this land still is calling out to people, 'Come, rest, unload your burdens, and find peace.' When we started this project with Hipcamp, we didn't fully realize that we were reconnecting with the history on this property. So, come, take your shoes off, and wade in the creek. Read a book while laying in a hammock. Sit by the fire and chat with family and friends. Come and participate in our little homesteading project, and leave your burdens behind. LOCAL ACTIVITIES: To the west is the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is 30 minutes away. 15 minutes away is Kerr Scott Dam where you can rent kayaks, pontoon boats, as well as other sporting equipment. Fish, go mountain biking on the extensive trails, and hiking. Prayer Mountain is right up the road, about 2 miles away. Heading east, you can find several fine wineries andvineyards that you can visit. There is also a moonshine distillery in town. About a half hour away is an Amish community that has several businesses open to the public, including the Shiloh Bakery and General Store. They are closed on Sunday and Monday. To the south, there is Rocky Face Park, where there is hiking and rock climbing. Nearby, is Emerald Hollow Mine, where you can go and find, and keep, precious stones you find in the nearby river. There is also a great disk course course, Highland Hills Disc Golf Course, one of the top 25 in the country. There is fun for all ages. Secluded Basecamp Beside Hanging Rock State Park (Moore’s Knob / Moore’s Wall) Tucked quietly along the edge of Hanging Rock State Park near the Tory’s Den access, this primitive campsite at 1140 Tomahawk Rd, Westfield, NC puts you right at the doorstep of Moore’s Knob and Moore’s Wall. From the Tory’s Den parking lot, you’ll follow Tory’s Den Road all the way up a rugged dirt road to reach the property. The last stretch is rough and narrow in spots, so you’ll want to be comfortable on mountain dirt roads and ideally have 4WD with some clearance. When you arrive, a roundabout dirt driveway opens into a private clearing with a 20' x 20' flat pad—perfect for tent camping or a small overland setup. The land was recently cleared, so it still has a raw, backcountry feel: expect stumps, roots, and uneven ground around the main flat pad, not a manicured campground. It’s quiet, heavily wooded, and feels like your own little slice of the Sauratown Mountains. The real magic is the access: it’s roughly a 200-yard walk through the woods to reach Moore’s Knob Trail, and you’re less than a mile from the base of Moore’s Wall, with all of Hanging Rock’s views, rock outcrops, and classic hiking right at hand. Wake up, brew coffee, and you can be on the trail to Moore’s Knob in minutes without ever getting back in your vehicle. On the property there is an old, abandoned cabin from a previous era. It is not safe or usable—for your safety and liability reasons, do not enter or touch the cabin or attempt to explore inside. Before the Kerr Scott Reservoir was built, in the 40's and 50's, this neighborhood was a local swimming hole and vacation area. Public buses came from neighboring communities so people could boat, swim, camp, and picnic. While we don't have access to the pond, our part of this land still is calling out to people, 'Come, rest, unload your burdens, and find peace.' When we started this project with Hipcamp, we didn't fully realize that we were reconnecting with the history on this property. So, come, take your shoes off, and wade in the creek. Read a book while laying in a hammock. Sit by the fire and chat with family and friends. Come and participate in our little homesteading project, and leave your burdens behind. LOCAL ACTIVITIES: To the west is the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is 30 minutes away. 15 minutes away is Kerr Scott Dam where you can rent kayaks, pontoon boats, as well as other sporting equipment. Fish, go mountain biking on the extensive trails, and hiking. Prayer Mountain is right up the road, about 2 miles away. Heading east, you can find several fine wineries andvineyards that you can visit. There is also a moonshine distillery in town. About a half hour away is an Amish community that has several businesses open to the public, including the Shiloh Bakery and General Store. They are closed on Sunday and Monday. To the northeast, about 45 minutes away, is Stone Mountain. Absolutely fantastic hiking, it is also an old homestead that has been renovated and is open to the public. To the south, there is Rocky Face Park, where there is hiking and rock climbing. Nearby, is Emerald Hollow Mine, where you can go and find, and keep, precious stones you find in the nearby river. There is also a great disk course course, Highland Hills Disc Golf Course, one of the top 25 in the country. There is fun for all ages. Our sites’ altitudes range from 3100 feet to over 3600 feet, which is a lot of slope and hillside to say the least. As a guest you will be offered insane long views and limited exposure to the oldest registered breed of bovine in the world. Our Scottish Highland Cattle are majestic and fit in quite well in the NC mountainside. Located in the Blue Ridge mountains, we have natural water springs popping out, some of which are tapped to drink from. (10.1.23 currently farm springs are not accessible to guests, shatley springs up the road approx 4miles north has a public spring that we highly recommend) If you are looking for a camping spot that is only 5-10 minutes from town (Jefferson NC or the quaint Downtown West Jefferson) but feels like you're in the middle of no where, then we have it! The Blue Ridge Parkway is less than 20 minutes away and the New River equally close. Looking Forward: July update. I wish we could’ve stayed longer! We were running behind schedule and arrived after dark, then had to leave before sunrise, so we didn’t get to take in the views. But the signs and string lights guiding us into the campground were such a welcoming sight after a long day on the road and pulling in so late. We’ll definitely be back to enjoy the campground properly!

Myself, boyfriend and two pups had the pleasure of staying at the Wind Song yurt this past weekend and it was absolutely amazing. Couldn’t have asked for anything better! If a "back to nature" primitive camping experience is what you seek, this is the best place to do it! You'll have 47 acres of mature woods, with rolling meadow, some hills, fresh springs, and a wide creek in beautiful Grayson Co, VA. Best of all, you will have lots of privacy and a spectacular star-filled sky on clear nights. Even though the property is located less than ten miles from the nearest town, here there is peace and quiet. Feel free to explore the entire property and enjoy the freedom to pitch your camp at the location that suits you! Perhaps you like the sound of a babbling creek and will want to set up camp at the flat along the creek; or perhaps you want to see the amazing view from the very top of the hill and camp there...or nestle your site in the beautiful meadow in between. The choice is yours. Expect to hike into forest and through tall grasses; there's even a bit of rock you can climb if you wish. Overall elevation change from the bottom lands to the very top of the hill is about +210 feet. Plenty of flatter land in-between. If exploring 47 acres isn't enough to keep you busy, it's a ten minute drive to the New River access where you can canoe, kayak, fish or swim. Or head into town and pick up a book at the local book shop. Access to the property will require a 4WD vehicle, or you may simply park by the entrance at the road and just hike it in. There are no amenities here, and the property often has vegetation (taller grasses) which you might want to cut to make your own site, which is allowed. Photos show what others have done in previous seasons to clear a space for camping. Campsites are generally not cleared of grass as shown. Hipcampers beware, this is rough, back-to-nature, old school style camping. There's often plenty of wildlife to see and hear although hunting, trapping, etc. is prohibited to Hipcampers. Campsite 1 and 2 are reserved together as one booking due to the close proximity of the sites. The property is secluded, but easily accessible. Campsites are full hookups which include water, sewer and 50 amp electric. Both sites can accommodate any size RV. They are gravel and level which makes getting set up easy. A 30 x 30 shelter with concrete floor, lights, picnic tables and trash bin is nearby, which is a great asset in any weather. A fire pit and chairs are a nice addition for evening enjoyment. Firewood is provided. WiFi is available. The area is pet friendly. Pets can be off leash, however, you might consider leashing your pet, as wildlife is frequently seen. If your furry friend is anything like our dogs, the chase is on when a deer, squirrel or turkey makes a sudden appearance! During your stay, take a 7/10 mile walk down to the New River. Pull up one of the chairs on the small covered deck overlooking the river, sit back and take in the sounds of the calming waters. Check out the Old Orchard Creek General Store, Pie on the Mountain Pizza, the Old Orchard Creek Blueberry Farm, and Molly Chomper for a perfect day in Ashe County. The New River State Park is an easy walk, float, paddle or drive away. This park is absolutely GORGEOUS and impeccably maintained, including hiking trails, public facilities, showers, boat launch and pick up, etc. Just a short drive to multiple Blue Ridge Parkway entry points for ease of access to Boone, Appalachian State University, Blowing Rock, Grandfather Mountain, Banner Elk, and the Linville Gorge. Mount Jefferson and Grayson Highlands are also just a short drive away for unlimited hiking and incredible mountain views. My personal favorite is hiking with the wild ponies at Grayson Highlands! We have Firewood available for a nominal fee. Just let us know and we will make arrangements to have it ready for you upon arrival. Please respect quiet hours between 10 PM and 8 AM each evening.

Where to go

Hanging Rock State Park

Hunker down at Hanging Rock State Park, 30 miles east of Mount Airy. Originally a Civilian Conservation Corps project, this park blossomed into an outdoor oasis featuring hiking, biking, horseback riding, swimming, and rock climbing. Explore part of the Mountains-to-Sea State Trail, or swim, paddle, and fish along the Dan River. Offering campsites, showers, vacation rentals, and picnic areas, the park is perfect for holiday getaways or one-day stays. Note that while trailers and RVs are welcome, there are no hookups, so campers must plan for dry sites.

Pilot Mountain State Park

Pop over to Pilot Mountain State Park to find the legendary geological knob at its center. Less than 15 miles from Mount Airy, the park features two areas: mountain and river. The mountain section highlights hiking, picnicking, and rock climbing, while the river section features horseback riding, paddling, and fishing. The Mountains-to-Sea Trail crosses through both areas, allowing campers to flow seamlessly throughout the park. On-site dry camping is available with showers for campers in tents, trailers, and RVs (no hookups available).

Stone Mountain State Park

Wander 35 miles southwest to Stone Mountain State Park—a scenic 600-foot granite dome. A Natural National Landmark, the dome provides panoramic views with the historical Hutchinson Homestead at its base. The park also features a portion of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, perfect for hiking, biking, paddling, and fishing. On-site camping includes tent sites, backpacking sites, backcountry options, and spots for trailers and RVs. Not all RV sites are equipped with hookups, though the camping area does provide showers and communal dump stations.
