Before the Kerr Scott Reservoir was built, in the 40's and 50's, this neighborhood was a local swimming hole and vacation area. Public buses came from neighboring communities so people could boat, swim, camp, and picnic. While we don't have access to the pond, our part of this land still is calling out to people, 'Come, rest, unload your burdens, and find peace.' When we started this project with Hipcamp, we didn't fully realize that we were reconnecting with the history on this property. So, come, take your shoes off, and wade in the creek. Read a book while laying in a hammock. Sit by the fire and chat with family and friends. Come and participate in our little homesteading project, and leave your burdens behind. LOCAL ACTIVITIES: To the west is the Blue Ridge Parkway, which is 30 minutes away. 15 minutes away is Kerr Scott Dam where you can rent kayaks, pontoon boats, as well as other sporting equipment. Fish, go mountain biking on the extensive trails, and hiking. Prayer Mountain is right up the road, about 2 miles away. Heading east, you can find several fine wineries andvineyards that you can visit. There is also a moonshine distillery in town. About a half hour away is an Amish community that has several businesses open to the public, including the Shiloh Bakery and General Store. They are closed on Sunday and Monday. To the northeast, about 45 minutes away, is Stone Mountain. Absolutely fantastic hiking, it is also an old homestead that has been renovated and is open to the public. To the south, there is Rocky Face Park, where there is hiking and rock climbing. Nearby, is Emerald Hollow Mine, where you can go and find, and keep, precious stones you find in the nearby river. There is also a great disk course course, Highland Hills Disc Golf Course, one of the top 25 in the country. There is fun for all ages. Our livestock dog lives with the goats, and you will hear her bark. (We provide ear plugs in case of night time barking). The goats love visitors, so please let us know if you want to take part in the farming, or just give treats :). We are also happy to have our guests take part in some of the farm activities. Bring your sense of adventure, but please do not book if you will be bothered by goat sounds, a dog barking or rooster crowing! We want you to be happy wherever you stay! The cabin has a driveway to the front door and is accessible by 3 stairs onto the porch. It's perfect for relaxing after a day of exploring and listening to the quiet sounds of the country. We have found that our guests are interested in having some local amenities available upon check-in. We love to make our guests comfortable, so have put together a variety of packages for you to select from upon confirmation of reservation. (If you'd like to see the packages ahead of time, please just send us a message here). There is NO SMOKING on the property, inside or outside. On the main level of the cabin, you will find a kitchenette (compact oven, microwave, coffee pot, refrigerator and sink), dining/living area, the bedroom and bathroom. There is also a loft with an additional full size bed, accessed by a sturdy ladder. Please note that the cabin is on the edge of the woods, and you may encounter wildlife while here :).

The property is 4.66 acres at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains, only 1 mile from the largest recreation area (Doughton Park) on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Longbottom Leaves is a working permaculture homestead. We have two creeks, a (swimming) pond, an off-grid house, a cob pizza oven, a fruit-and-nut orchard, a huge vegetable garden, and over three acres of forest with walking trails through them. We are only 4 miles from Stone Mountain State Park in North Carolina. Hiking and fishing are fantastic in both Doughton Park and Stone Mountain SP, and Stone Mountain also has rock climbing routes. In addition, we are less than a 30-minute drive from about a dozen or so vineyards. Elkin NC is about 40 minutes east, Wilkesboro NC is about 40 minutes south, and the Blue Ridge Parkway is 20 minutes away. We--Emma and Jonathon--live in an off-grid cabin on the property. We both garden and write (travel- and sustainability-type stuff), and we are happy to share info about the property and stuff to do around the area.

I stayed at The Love Shack this weekend and had a wonderful experience. Wendy was a wonderful host—thoughtful, welcoming, and clearly dedicated to creating a beautiful space for her guests. She even cleared the leaves off the trail before I arrived, which made for such a lovely walk through the woods. I spotted a deer along the way which was nice. The A-frame shelter was cozy and warm. I enjoyed the most relaxing nap in the hammock. I highly recommend!

We had a great time at the love shack! It was perfectly cozy, and Wendy has done such a wonderful job creating an accommodative experience that really feels unique. The shack itself was more spacious than I expected, and the setting was beautiful, were very grateful that Wendy would share her beautiful land with the public! Even though it rained we were able to stay warm and dry. It was a really great place to stay, and I hope we get another chance to visit.

Weekend Trip to Babbling Brook Campground

I loved spending several nights in the treehouse. I came prepared for colder weather so I had plenty of warm clothes, hand and feet warmers, and propane for the buddy heater and Coleman stove, both of which I used and appreciated. It rained during part of my stay which was magical on the tin roof. The creek babbled. I found dry firewood and kindling prior to the rain, and paired with firewood I brought I enjoyed several campfires. The water accessible pump/kitchen came in handy as the treehouse doesn’t have water or electricity. The attached compostable toilet was convenient and never smelled funky. The cabin is stocked with all the kitchen things you might want for cooking. There were plenty of blankets and I slept snug as a bug in the comfy loft bed. I did rescue a spider or two and released into the wild. As expected for a treehouse in their habitat. Parking for one car was convenient atop a walkway to the treehouse. I enjoyed a farm visit with Elizabeth and learned about her goats horses and more. Her dogs came to visit a few times. Overall I couldn’t have been more happy. It helped to come prepared for the cooler weather paired with Elizabeth’s thoughtful touches. While there are solar lights in and around the cabin, make sure to bring headlamps and/or other light sources. It felt whimsical and dreamy and I can’t wait to return. Thanks Elizabeth!

A really special stay. We were a group of friends from different areas and we loved staying here. Some of us camped and some stayed in the little cabin. The owners can’t be nicer. They’re responsive with communication and every detail is thought out. We had a toddler with us and she loved visiting the animals (horses, donkeys, chickens, goats…) BRP is about 40 mins away, and Boone is 50 mins away. Very convenient. We would love to come back. What a peaceful place to spend a weekend at! My partner, our 2 dogs, and I had such a relaxing stay at The Lee farm in the glamping tent. The cows were so fun to watch and listen to! Theresa is a wonderful host who is such a pleasure to chat with. We enjoyed exploring with our pups, laying in the hammock, and stargazing. We were grateful to have almost all the amenities we needed on site so that we didn’t have to pack too much since we visited from out of state. It was a bit chilly overnight when we stayed for a mid October trip, and the comforter in the tent was so luxuriously cozy and warm, we didn’t feel cold at all while sleeping! It was nice to have a real bed instead of our camping pads for once. Glamping at its finest!

We had a perfect first ever glamping experience at Christina’s site. They met us upon arrival and made sure we had everything we needed. The tent and kitchen is equipped with everything you’d need and more. They gave us an in depth tour of the farm and flower patch and helped us take great photos. Another family was in the tent next door but there was no issue at all. A beautiful site and a great way to introduce my family to the outdoors.

We loved our stay at the Loveshack and if you’re thinking of booking this spot, DO IT! The property is stunning, with trails steps away from the Shack and a babbling brook. The bed slept wonderfully and even with 42° temperature nightly lows, we were comfortable with an extra blanket from home. Wendy is a wonderful host who is attentive and respectful. We also brought our beagle, who had a blast playing in the stream and exploring the property with us. Wendy also provided some boardgames and some basic cookware for guests to use as well, which came in handy when we realized our camp stove was broken! We couldn’t have asked for more relaxing, magical, and nature filled weekend. We genuinely cannot wait to come back!

We had the absolute best stay at the little adjacent barn. Very special to have all the sweet animals all around us. The cottage has everything you need, including fresh eggs and coffee/tea. We had a fire in the fire pit with wood provided. Elizabeth has some awesome recommendations for things to do in the area, which we took her up on and thoroughly enjoyed. Good people, good time!!! Highly recommend this peaceful stay in nature.

Where to go

Hanging Rock State Park

Hunker down at Hanging Rock State Park, 30 miles east of Mount Airy. Originally a Civilian Conservation Corps project, this park blossomed into an outdoor oasis featuring hiking, biking, horseback riding, swimming, and rock climbing. Explore part of the Mountains-to-Sea State Trail, or swim, paddle, and fish along the Dan River. Offering campsites, showers, vacation rentals, and picnic areas, the park is perfect for holiday getaways or one-day stays. Note that while trailers and RVs are welcome, there are no hookups, so campers must plan for dry sites.

Pilot Mountain State Park

Pop over to Pilot Mountain State Park to find the legendary geological knob at its center. Less than 15 miles from Mount Airy, the park features two areas: mountain and river. The mountain section highlights hiking, picnicking, and rock climbing, while the river section features horseback riding, paddling, and fishing. The Mountains-to-Sea Trail crosses through both areas, allowing campers to flow seamlessly throughout the park. On-site dry camping is available with showers for campers in tents, trailers, and RVs (no hookups available).

Stone Mountain State Park

Wander 35 miles southwest to Stone Mountain State Park—a scenic 600-foot granite dome. A Natural National Landmark, the dome provides panoramic views with the historical Hutchinson Homestead at its base. The park also features a portion of the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, perfect for hiking, biking, paddling, and fishing. On-site camping includes tent sites, backpacking sites, backcountry options, and spots for trailers and RVs. Not all RV sites are equipped with hookups, though the camping area does provide showers and communal dump stations.

When to go

With year-round activities and beautiful landscapes, Mount Airy welcomes campers in every season. Summertime temperatures reach average highs of 87°F—ideal for water activities, rock climbing, backpacking, tent camping, and RVing without heat. As winter approaches, be prepared for temperatures to drop below freezing. The area sees yearly snowfall in December, January, and February, meaning campers should be equipped and experienced in cold weather camping or consider heated rentals.
