The best private sites RV camping near Utica

Just 35 miles south of the Adirondacks, this small city is a gateway to central New York. With lakes, marshes, and the Erie Canal, Utica is fascinating for urban adventurers and families alike.

The Erie Canal hasn't run directly through Utica for nearly a century. Today, the paved-over waterway is the 13.5-mile Canalway Trail. The flat terrain makes for easy biking. The trail passes the Utica Marsh Wildlife Management Area, a nice spot for nature walks and birding.

The Mohawk River is also here, offering a watery view of the shore's shuttered factories and wildlife. To launch, take your canoe to Harbor Road near Genesee Street in Utica. You can also hop aboard an Erie Canal tour boat, with options from group kayaks to house boats. The guides are a great source of Erie history and can explain finer points like the canal's antique locks.

Kayakers can pitch tent at Lock 20 in Marcy, NY. The facilities have bathrooms and water, but the first-come, first-serve camping is quite small, so try to arrive early.

In nearby Rome, Delta Lake State Park sits on a peninsula jutting into the Delta Reservoir. A popular spot for fishing, the park has a boat launch and a sandy beach with lifeguards during the summer. The camp has spacious sites, some on the waterfront, and each comes with a picnic table and fire ring. The wooded grounds here are relatively flat, making for easy walking along the trails.

Pixley Falls State Park is a short drive from Delta Lake. The star of the park is the 50-foot tall waterfall. A hiking trail follows the streams uphill for deeper exploration.

The property consists of a mixture of upland hardwoods (mainly Oak, Maple and Cherry) with scattered stands of Red Pine, White Spruce, Hemlock and two open fields/pastures. There are also the occasional conifers scattered about just to keep things interesting. The majority of the property is gently sloping from the South up towards the North. The is also a nice ridge on the NE corner of the property to aid in topographic diversity. One of the fields is a seven acre hay field and the other is a five acre food plot planted in clover, chicory and other grasses. This field has also been recently planted with Apples, Pear, American Plum, Red Osier Dogwood, Persimmon, Red Mulberry, Chinese Chestnut, and Hazelnuts. These are all young at this time but will start to provide diversity and wildlife interest in the coming years. Wildlife abounds here at the homestead. Whitetail Deer and Eastern Wild Turkey are very common to see. We also have a variety of small animals as well such as Red and Grey Squirrels, Raccoons, Porcupine, Opossum, Fisher etc. For the birders, we have Barred and Great Horned Owls and Red Tailed Hawks. It is also not uncommon to see Bald Eagles soaring over the fields looking for their next meal. All of the property is easily accessible via our extensive trail system. There is also another 187 acres that borders our land that also has trails that would allow hiking. We have detailed maps so that getting lost would be the least of your worries. We stayed in a 26' trailer, and the hookups were excellent. If you have dogs with good recall, this is the perfect place. Being able to let them off leash was so appreciated. The lake was beautiful and crystal clear. Our dogs loved swimming, and we enjoyed paddle boarding. Next time we’ll come earlier in the season so we have more daylight to enjoy everything. My husband and I had the pleasure of being the first hip camp guests! What an amazing experience! We were so happy to visit this hidden gem! It is underdevelopment so it’s under a tad of construction. However this little gem is definitely one I would visit again. Joe was an amazing host and stayed up late for us after a small embarrassing navigation on my part(pfft truck driver getting lost lmbo) I would overall say the experience was amazing. I wouldn’t bring tiny humans… like I said still under development and the ponds… being a hover craft mom still for my adult children. But as a doggie mom my dogs loved it! Thanks again Joe!

This spot is AMAZING!! Super quiet, private, and just a great setup. We are boondockers so we didn't need anything. A very clean outhouse was a bonus. Great fire pit with benches and a picnic table. Trails all around. We explored the trails to the river, with the drought, it was very low. Very nice trails. A very nice walk down the very quiet road to the Moose River. A beautiful spot to explore. One thing, as usual, Google maps is off on the directions. Follow Stacey's directions and look for the gate. We will definitely be back.

This spot exactly as described. Very private but everything here and well laid out. The walk to the lake is a bit steep but 110% worth it if you like to fish or be by water. We caught at least a dozen largemouth bass, several 10-12 inches, a yellow perch and several large pumpkinseeds. RV Site is gravel and damn near perfectly level. Couldn’t ask for much better, appreciate Roberto and his family are willing to to share this very nice location, A+ Hipcamp!

This is an amazing camp site. Such a beautiful location. Felt very private. The atv trails on the property made for a nice hike. Great amenities. We had the pleasure of having a cute porcupine waddle right through the middle of our camp one night. Communication with the owner was great, extremely quick response. Highly recommend. We are already hoping to come back someday.

Everything was great, the property was well maintained. The facilities were nice for what it was. We had a wonderful time, the property is very private and quiet most of the time except when there is a caravan of ATVs going by, which is to be expected for the area. The location is fantastic its private , but not too far from anything you might need. It was very nice to be able to let our dogs run free on the property and with plenty of trails there for them to run through.

Everything about this camp was awesome. I liked the view of the water and accessing it was very easy. The lean-to and the outhouse were well kept. Accessing the campsite was a simple minute drive from the road, and you can park right next to the site. The view of the stars was awe-inspiring. I will definitely be back and I’d recommend to all campers.

Weekend Trip to Absolute Serenity

Absolute Serenity was perfect for our group and camping style. Great piece of property with a ton of trails to explore. Large open area for setting up camp with communal fire pit outfitted with benches and picnic table. Stargazing was amazing. Our 3 dogs (high energy hunting breed) had a blast running, exploring and even enjoyed the dog pool on property. It was definitely private and no real traffic - except for the atv’s headed to the trail system. Next time, we’ll bring out sideXside to take full advantage of the location. Stacey was readily available and quick to respond to any questions. Super friendly and welcoming.

Oasis among the rolling tree covered hills. Level driveway steps from a private lake w dock and diving board. 30 amp electric hookup and water conveniently located. Clean, well manicured area with community fire pit next to miles of clearly marked hiking trails. Todd provided trail maps and a list of amenities in the area like restaurants and laundromats. He and his wife were so wonderful and personable and well organized. I had some water leak issues while I was there and Todd was understanding and very helpful. The surrounding view and neighbors farms were so gorgeous on every walk. I felt so much peace the week that I stayed here. About a 20-minute drive from many stores but you could never tell that sitting and enjoying this property. Highly recommend. They even sent me home with doggie treats for my two pups.
