We are in the rural area between Hesperus, Durango, and Mancos - An easy drive to Durango and its thrift shops, restaurants, galleries, cafes, Animas River and River Trail, and hiking and biking trails. Mancos is filled with art galleries, a wonderful bakery and cafe, beauty, and endless trails. Also within driving distance are Phil's World, Cortez, Sand Canyon, the beautiful La Plata Canyon, Mesa Verde National Park, Lake NIghthorse, and more! There are endless hiking and biking trails within driving distance of the property. Cross country skiing and snowshoeing abound and alpine skiing at Purgatory Ski Resort are popular winter activities. The views of the La Platas and Sleeping Ute are ever changing, awe inspiring, and constant from the deck of The Art Shack. On the property are cats, two dogs, two equines (you will hear our burro braying). Our neighbors have yaks, cattle, goats, sheep, dogs, horses, poultry, and other farm animals. You will also see the wild critters that inhabit our corner of La Plata County. You are welcome to wander our property beyond the Big Stick Ditch but do not go into the pasture with our burro or enter any of the out buildings. Park within steps of the Art Shack, cross the foot bridge over the bubbling irrigation ditch, and you have arrived! Please remove your shoes before entering! There is electricity, a queen bed, rustic chairs inside, an outdoor table and chairs, a composting toilet, a coffee machine, and purified drinking water for your use. An electric heater is supplied during winter months. There is no air conditioning. We are available if needed (unless we are out of town adventuring) but will not expect to interact with you as you relax. Beautiful spot in the hills above Durango! Directions were clear, site was level, firepit and utilities all as advertised. We drove a 2 WD Ram Class B and had no issues accessing. Will stay here again when we are in Durango next. :)

This was our first Hipcamp experience and we were pleased. Easy to get to and well maintained. It was perfect for our sprinter van. A bonus was electrical hookup. the solitude was needed.

I loved my night at Gretchen's property. I was only there for a short time but Gretchen and her pups were very welcoming and the shack was the perfect place to rest for a night before a long drive. Had everything needed for a short stay :)

This spot has a lot of potential. It truly is in a grove of aspens right up the hill from the host’s home. I was a week too early for the color change! I normally dry camp so I felt spoiled when the host ran both power and water to my camper. The spot was quiet and convenient to Durango, the Million Dollar Highway, and Vallecito Reservoir. I spent most of my time exploring those areas. I was in a trailer and had to back up a steep hill to get to the spot. It was not difficult, and if I had failed, the host was there to help. If I’m back in the area I will definitely stay there again!

Simple campsite for a quick stay. The campsite is a gravel drive in the front yard of a home in a rural neighborhood. Active wildlife in the area. We had a deer run by the tent and heard elk calls at night. It's more of an RV spot with an electric hook-up, but does suffice for a quick, overnight stay. Be sure to use the bathroom before you show!

We had a great quick night at Joe’s place. There were so many amenities like a fully stocked camp kitchen, outhouse, shower set up, and plenty of chairs and tables. We didn’t have to unload much of our own stuff and could just use what was provided. We slept peacefully with the sound of the creek. We wish we could have stayed longer to explore more of the property and creek! Our dog was a bit anxious at first but Joe came by with a treat to say hello and she immediately was happy and relaxed. She loved playing in the creek.

We had such a great stay at HRT Durango! The amenities were perfect for our family — the kids loved the playground, and the pool was a great way to cool off and relax after a day of exploring. Having a dog park on site was a huge bonus too, making it easy for our pup to get some exercise and enjoy the trip with us. The campground was well-kept, with clean facilities and plenty of space at the sites to set up comfortably. The staff was incredibly friendly and welcoming, always checking in to make sure we had everything we needed. Overall, it was the perfect family-friendly stop, and we’d definitely recommend it to anyone traveling through Durango.
