Welcome to the Hemlock Ridge Homestead! This custom log home built in the early 2000's was a dream of mine since I was 8 years old. Our family lives here year round and absolutely love it. These sites are on a seasonal road so travel in and out can be impeded at times due to weather or external forces, such as tree falls, wash outs, etc. This is a self sufficient homestead in the making. Our garden has progressed greatly, and our fruit tree orchards are starting to produce. The free range chickens are fun and quirky, offering farm fresh eggs. We just opened our second site, the Prairieview Chalet 2024 summer. Both sites offer great amenities. The Acorn Retreat cabin includes a hot tub, gas weber grill and other amenities. The boujee outhouse is shared by both sites and is cleaned regularly. The new Prairieview Chalet is an exceptional adventurers haven! It has all the things you want after a day(s) out in the wilderness, with amenities like a hot shower, fully stocked kitchen, linens and more. Our property reflects our love of the land and space. We are always making improvements, such as the timber framed chicken coop. We now have a ping pong table for our guests, and still offer farm fresh eggs. Bear Tree Homestead is nestled among the cliffs and ravines which drains the south face of Hogback Mountain located in Marquette Township Michigan. Hogback Mountain is one of the larger rock formations in the Huron Range, a surprisingly rugged, and diverse region of low mountains carved by glaciers. Each cabin is hand-built of log and stone using traditional Scandinavian building tools and techniques. The cabins have access to the pond, use of the canoe, a private fire pit, picnic table, charcoal grill and privy. Inside the cabins is a functional kitchen with dishes, flatware, pots and pans, so you can prepare meals onsite. Cabins also have table and chairs as well soft chairs/sofa sitting area, bookshelves with a variety of books, board games and puzzles, and covered porch in case of rain. Our buildings, gardens, and pastures are integrated into the forested landscape and are not your typical homestead. Enjoy the peaceful surroundings, collect fresh eggs (when they are laying), lay in the hammock, listen to the sounds of nature and the barnyard or take an adventure hike, bike ride, snowshoe, or ski right out the door.  One of the most wonderful things we have to offer is the accessibility to thousands of protected acres surrounding us and the trails that bisect them. The property is on the North Country Trail, just over a Noquemanon Trail Network Forestville trailhead where access to year round recreation awaits. We are located 8 miles from downtown Marquette in Michigan's Upper Peninsula where there are many great restaurants, shops, and brewpubs. However, once you drive into Bear Tree Homestead and settle in you will not want to leave.

Your host property is 13 acres between the Yellow Dog River, and Bear Lake, with frontage on both. The Yellow Dog River is a legendary trout stream, and many artists have found that the river satisfies their need for the wild. There are two cabin sites available, One overlooking Bear Lake with sunset views, and the other a cabin that was moved to the property in 1999 to preserve it. Both sites share amenities such as the outhouse, communal fire pit and water, but the cabins are not in close proximity so everyone has their privacy. They are both rustic cabins having no running water, or electricity. A futon with mattress cover is provided in each cabin along with a table and chairs. See the individual site descriptions for more details. We are 20 miles (app) north of Marquette, which is my home town.  It is a destination for bikers, skiiers, and outdoor rec folk!  There are so many things to see and do in Marquette, so make sure to plan enough time to check out the town!  Also, just six miles to our north is historic Big Bay.  A lumber town back in the day, it is full of history.  Check out the Thunder Bay Inn, where parts of Anatomy of a Murder, starring Jimmy Stewart and Lee Remick were filmed.  Don't miss going to the Lumberjack to see where the actual murder took place, either!  You will find good eats and perhaps even some live music at either establishment. You'll also find everything you need in the way of groceries, and gas at Cram's General Store, where there's also a laundromat.  Burns landing just north of the marina has the historic Burns family home renovated in a park setting, and a public beach access to mighty Lake Superior.  This park has picnic tables and grills, and even a handicap accessible outhouse and trail to the lake. Yellow Dog falls is a short drive on Co. Road 510, and on the way be sure to climb Thomas Rock overlook.  There are new bike trails if you're into that as well!   Stay awhile.  You'll be glad you did! We strive to offer peace and serenity to our guests, and love to share these woods with those needing tranquility and respite from a busy world. In this sensitive environmental area, we have only two sites to keep traffic down, enhance our visitors experience, and to protect the wildlife here. Unplug with us, eh!

Looking for a remote cabin for a romantic getaway or a relaxing time in the big Northwoods? Ellen’s cabin is off-grid (12volt DC, solar), has limited running water and unreliable cellphone service. It’s 1/2 a mile from a dirt road which is a portion of the North Country Trail, sitting in the rugged Michigamme Highlands, close to Silver Lake and Dead River Basins. The cabin is fully equipped and is 45 minutes from Ishpeming and an hour from Marquette. There is a wood stove and back-up propane for heat, a gas stove and small grill for cooking and a small fridge. There is a double bed, two single beds and a pull-out futon and all bedding is provided. There is also an open area upstairs for yoga or for children to play. There is a fire ring with wood provided, a deck with great views of the Mulligan escarpment and an outhouse. There are lots of opportunities to see birds and other wildlife and for this reason we do not allow dogs, hunting or motorized sports.

Hello, and welcome to Superior Times Resort and Campground! We would like to take a moment and introduce ourselves. Our names are Tom and Heather Holmstrom. We were married in 2016 and have four children as part of our blended family. We are both originally from the Upper Peninsula. Superior Times and Resort was the result of us wanting to do something “outside of the box” that would allow us to raise our family and showcase our love and respect for the beauty of the Upper Peninsula…the area that many refer to as “God’s Country.”  In December of 2016, we mistakenly pulled into the driveway of this property. At that time, it was known as Coleman’s Paradise Resort. There was a For Sale sign marking the property. We both knew at that point our fate was sealed to become this property’s new owners. We learned that this property had been a family vacation destination for nearly 100 years. We could only imagine the special memories that had been made here over the years! We wanted to become a part of that deep history.Through the many years of the resort’s history, the owners had changed and the cabins were showing true signs of their age. We knew there was A LOT of work that simply had to be done. On a wing and prayer, we somehow made this great resort ours. In April of 2017, we opened what we named Superior Times Resort and Campground. We pulled up or sleeves and went to work! We began this resort’s transformation by replacing nearly all of the roofs. We then added the campground (we are most proud of the campground, as it did not exist prior to our ownership). In the winters we worked on the inside of the cabins, which is what we continue working on to this day. We have completely remodeled 3 cabins; Eagle Harbor, Copper Harbor and Isle Royal. Smaller projects are being continually worked on in the other cabins. Slowly but surely, we are turning this property into our vision. The harsh winter of 2018/2019 led to two roof collapses and even more work!! In 2020, we designed and built rustic bungalows in our campground for nightly rental. Please, take a walk down Backwoods Alley and check them out. In the winter of 2020/2021, we built new custom showers in 3 cabins and replaced the old siding on Eagle Harbor and Copper Harbor. We think the new cedar shakes complete the rustic feel we are aiming for. In the spring of 2021, we added 4 new campsites and built a new bath house for our campers. We also ordered new windows for Tahquamenon Falls and Mackinaw Island, however due to the pandemic we did not receive them in time for installation (insert angry emoji). It has been so rewarding having customers return to this resort and commenting so favorably on the changes we have made! What will 2022 bring? Stay tuned.We could not have done ANY of the resort changes without the help and support of my parents, Roger and Marcia Hart. They sold their own home to live out here full time to be a part of the resort’s transformations. Without them, this dream would not have been possible. They truly define the saying, “labor of love,” as we often can only pay them with love.  Our dream truly became their dream, as well.

This was our second stay at the Orchard House, and it was every bit as magical as the first! Jill continues to be the perfect host — warm, attentive, and full of thoughtful touches (including another batch of her amazing homemade cookies!). The house itself is absolutely enchanting, from its cozy, well-appointed rooms to the peaceful property that feels like a true escape from the world. We loved being so close to the Hogback trailhead — it makes for the perfect day hike before coming back to unwind in such a serene setting. We can’t wait to return and try out the new sauna on our next visit! If you’re considering a stay at the Orchard House, don’t hesitate — it’s the kind of place that fills your soul and leaves you with memories you’ll want to relive again and again.

Weekend Trip to Bear Tree Homestead

From the moment we arrived at the Pond Cabin, everything we experienced exceeded our expectations. The cabin itself was cute, cozy, and very clean. It had a lot more kitchen and camping supplies than we expected. Loved the layout. It comfortably slept three adults and two dogs. The woods surrounding it and the pond are very beautiful and serene. No road sounds or artificial light, just peaceful nature and the quaint farmhouse. We were welcomed by our gracious hosts and their dogs who made us feel very at home, were so friendly, and made great recommendations for hikes and experiences. The hike to Hogback mountain is a must. The view from the top and fall colors were just breathtaking and you can walk there right from the cabin! We spent most of a day hiking the NCT and were just blown away by the trails and views. None of us knew how great the traditional Finnish sauna and cold plunge (into the crystal clear spring fed pond?!?) would relax and rejuvenate us. Wow! Also worth mentioning it’s an easy, very pretty drive to Pictured Rocks. You can do it all. All I can say is we will definitely be back and would recommend it to anyone who’s looking for what must be the ultimate UP experience.

The cabin was perfect, the land was beautiful, beds are quite comfy, oil lamps and fire are ever so cozy and the cookies so tasty. Hogback mountain trail is very close by and well worth the venture if you can manage a bit of a scramble at lest once. One evening here was not sufficient, we definitely plan to return. Well worth checking out if taking a trip to the area or just looking to go somewhere beautiful and peaceful to retreat from the world for a while.

Pond cabin is clean, comfortable on the inside, slept exceptionally well, in the warm and cozy loft, using wood stove that kept me warm all night using very little wood. For those who like disconnecting in primitive spaces where the sounds of birds and wind rustling through the trees, an occasional distant rooster's crow, then this is the place you'll not want to leave. So close to North Country trail and easy hike to Hogback Mtn summit with amazing views. Jill the hostess and her family were very friendly as were her 3 dogs. Only heard them bark for a short time in the distance 1st night, while they protected the homestead chickens from wildlife. Jill showed me the authentic Mongolian Yurt they just installed, located on the trail towards the North Country Trail and Hogback mtn. Beautiful! I thought it was easy to find using Jill's directions and my satellite map/location phone. I would definitely stay here again. Hiked Dead Man's River trail nearby many waterfalls, enjoyed Marquette MI Pasties Lawry's and Iron Town Pasty the best, Presque Isle Black Rocks at sunset, and Ore Dock & Black Rock Breweries. Even say an ore freighter being loaded at Marquette's active Ore Dock!

We loved the view from the Sunset Cabin! Sue made sure we felt right at home in every sense. We forgot bedding and she lent us blankets to make sure we stayed warm. We swam in the river and felt so refreshed by the cold water. A highlight was seeing a river otter when we went kayaking on the lake!! Access to the fire pit, outhouse, and gear made everything feel very easy. The dishes area made clean-up a breeze after meals!

We adored the Pond Cabin and the entire grounds of the Bear Tree Homestead! We saw such amazing critters right outside of out cozy cabin door: ducks, turtles, little red squirrels, a cute toad who came right onto our front steps, a couple small snakes, and several zipping hummingbirds that visited the feeder on the porch throughout the day! We took the canoe out into the quaint pond every morning and hung out with the duck family that lives there. The kerosene lamps provided cozy light in the evenings to play cards, board games, and spend time together. We loved playing with Chauncey the dog, wandering around the breathtaking grounds, and hiking the nearby trails. We thoroughly enjoyed the hike along the smaller lake with lotus flowers east of the property and the trail to and views from Hogback were incredible. Jill and Nick were fantastic hosts and we cannot wait to come back again!
