Spacious Skies Balsam Woods is a hidden paradise of a campground located right in the heart of Maine, just a half hour south of Moosehead Lake, the largest lake in Maine, and 60 miles as the crow flies from the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, Mt. Katahdin, in Baxter State Park. We offer both wooded and open sites that can accommodate most rigs. Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring, water, 30 or 50-amp electrical service, and most offer sewer. Groups and tent campers are welcome. Balsam Woods campground is less than a minute’s drive from Piper Pond, a 2-mile-long lake with public boat launch and beach access. Onsite, we have a camp store and snack bar stocked with necessities, treats, and goodies for the whole family. There is no shortage of fun activities with our heated pool, classic rec hall, playground, a new jumping pillow, and gem mining! We have three cozy rustic cabins as well as three deluxe cabins for those wanting to experience the beauty of the great outdoors but who may not be ready for the tenter or RV life!

This is a quaint, off grid cabin located in Elliotsville, Me., surrounded by wilderness, next to the Appalachian Trail in the 100 Mile Wilderness. Propane lights, glass front woodstove, fully operational kitchen, propane cookstove, fire pit out front, BBQ grill on porch. Firewood and propane and plenty of water at sink provided. 2 8ft kayaks for your use to explore all the ponds and lakes nearby. You can spend days or weeks exploring the area, hiking, biking, canoeing, mountain climbing and swimming. Its like going back in time a hundred years but you have some cell reception, unlike our ancestors. Have made several improvements to cabin not yet reflected in guest photos. Yeti type cooler provided for refrigeration of food for longer stays. The cabin is small but can accommodate 5 easily. Queen bed with bunk beds in 1st floor bedroom, full size and twin bed in upstairs bedroom. Clean linens provided. Open kitchen and living room. Seems like most people love it. Pretty sure you will too. So much to do in the area. Be as bored or as active as you want. Welcome book with directions to local spots all very close. Waterfalls, the most beautiful lake (Onawa), swimming holes... all close by. Appalachian trail out back. Other sites close by must be driven to but close by still, away from town. Tiny A-Frame Cabin on a personal wildlife preserve! Located a mile from the Passadumkeag River and three miles from the Penobscot River! Quiet Space! Come enjoy a 'Piece of my Peace!' Meadow Vista and Garden views With Composting Toilet, No Electricity and No Running Water! • The wall does lift up and down so you can be closed in if it rains but I leave it open most of the time to allow air flow. • There is a fire pit and two chairs available at the cabin for you to cozy up or cook your food. If you would like a wheel barrow full of firewood provided there is some available on site for a small donation. • There is a hammock with a shade cover at the cabin for you to use. • There is a bug net provided in the cabin if you're in need of some extra protection indoors. • Sunkhaze Meadows National Wildlife Refuge is a short drive with a few hiking trails. • Baxter State Park & Acadia National Park are each an hour and a half away (just in opposite directions). • A composting toilet is on site, with a scoop and bucket of sawdust to cover waste. I you need to pee, find a tree! If it's number two, use the loo! • No electricity at the cabin or on the property • No running or potable drinking water. Must bring in water. • The cabin is quite cozy for 1-2 people and/or 1-2 fur babies. The cabin itself has an 8x10’ floor plan with a full size futon. The deck gives another 3’ to enjoy your inside/outside stay. • The property DOES get full sun so be aware of finding shade throughout the day! I like to enjoy the river(s) and explore the area during the peak heat hours! • Mosquitos like to come out at dusk. I do have some citronella candles but it would be best if you came prepared with bug repellent! • There is a New tiny cabin construction on site! • This cabin is NOT private - one dwelling is visible but it is also NOT a rental. Big Moose Inn Cabins & CampgroundIrving O. Hunt and his brother Lyman built some rough camps on Millinocket Lake before they became interested in the Nesowadnehunk Stream region. Whether or not their old camps were at the same site as the present camps on Millinocket Lake we do not know.The Millinocket Lake Camps, known today as Big Moose Inn, are located on a narrow spit of land separating Ambejejus Lake and Millinocket Lake. Before a dam controlled Ambajejus’ water level, it was possible to pole up the short stream from Millinocket Lake into Ambejejus.Fred Spencer build the camps, originally named Camp Eureka, in 1899 or 1900 and ran them with his brother. With the founding of Millinocket only a few years earlier and lumbering roads nearing Katahdin, the two lakes became more easily accessible. Camp Eureka was advertised as the only camp reachable by both boat (from Norcross) and road (from Millinocket). In 1905, the rate was $1.50 per day, meals included. Spencer also claimed the lakes had no flies or mosquitoes during spring and summer- a phenomenon caused by the way winds blow across the lakes, which makes it difficult for insects to gain a foothold.The camps’ name changed to Camp Spencer and later to Spencer’s Camps. Around 1929 the lease was transferred to Elmer Woodworth, who lived with his wife on a nearby island while they operated the camps. Elmer, a well-known guide, trapped over the winter, and his wife served as the camp cook. The couple soon renamed the camps Millinocket Lake Camps and Trading Post. They also maintained an outlying camp on Sandy Stream for their guests. In 1941, a major fire broke out in the area. The Woodworths saved the camps by wetting them down, but lost their island home when a stray spark jumped the cove. There is some evidence that, for a short time, a gentleman named Johnny Given either held the lease or managed the camps for the Woodworths. Except for that brief change the Woodworths operated the camps for many years until they passed the lease on to their son Ray, who ran them with his wife Muriel.In 1977, the lease was transferred to Bob and Frederica (“Teddy”) Boynton, who in 1981 sold the trading post to Erwin and Maureen Bacon. The Boyntons retained the sporting camp operation and later added a public restaurant. Teddy renamed the camps Big Moose Inn. Bob and his son Bruce made many renovations to the camps, while Teddy decorated and furnished them. The Boynton Family has remained involved in the success of the inn and restaurant. After Teddy’s death in 1991, management passed to Bruce and his sister Laurie, but Bob and other family members are still very involved.The dam separates the flowages of the two lakes. Millinocket Lake is about eight feet above its original level, and Ambajejus is now some 21 feet above its original level. We also have geese, they are of the nice geese persuasion, they will usually veer away from you upon being approached. We do not want any pets chasing our geese. They have goslings now so will be protective of their young. At the cabin, they are welcome to be off leash, but should respond to voice commands and not be left outside unattended. Also, Maine is very dog friendly. There are few places you can’t take your pet. If you’re not pet friendly, please let us know.

Michelle's cabin was a great spot to stay overnight, she was communicative and clear with directions and always easy to get in touch with. The cabin was quaint, cosy and fit 3 people without a problem, the outhouse and shower were clean and super helpful, too - definitely would stay again!

This was a great cabin! Had everything we needed and kept us nice and warm through the night. Jamin was super helpful in showing us how to get to the cabin when we arrived in the dark. Did some fishing and was perfect for our two nights. We were there in mid November and were so grateful he kept the cabin running for us.

Weekend Trip to 100 Mile Wilderness Cabin

This was our second visit to Paul's cabin and did not disappoint again. Paul made sure there was enough water and wood to last our stay. There is now a flushing toilet outside which was a nice treat. There are many fantastic walking trails close by including the Appalachian Trail. This time round we spent time at North Pond and Juniper Knee Pond and hiked 4ish hour to Little Wilson Falls (there and back and time at the falls).

Weekend Trip to Evergreen Conservation Area

I loved staying on Dan’s property. His camp provided everything my group needed for a relaxing fall weekend getaway: spectacular views, accommodating infrastructure, and absolute solitude. You can tell he’s put a lot of thought and energy into the property (and the Hipcamp experience ), which made the entire stay seamless and inviting. We will be back! Pro Tips: 1) arrive before dark to get your bearings, 2) pack light (it’s a good hike to the lake) and the rocky, rooty trail is not wagon-friendly, 3) Download offline Google maps and give yourself extra time for arrival because it’s way out there and GPS/cell service is spotty at best.

Dan was a gracious host with two cabins that were fit for anyone trying to get away for a long off grid weekend! Kayaks and canoes that are available make this spot that much more amazing. If you are trying to get away with your dog and not worry about any neighbors.. this is the spot. 10/10 recommend this gem of a spot with an amazing host!

Great spot with beautiful views. I had a nuthatch land on my arm in the morning like Snow White, which was a moment I’ll never forget. Walk from car wasn’t bad but pack to consider for folks with mobility or lifting abilities. Hoping to come back again!

Sweet little cabin in the woods! Jamin was super accommodating and even built an outside fire for us prior to arrival. More spacious than you might think for a small cabin. We opted not to use the generator but it was nice to have that option. We enjoyed staying here as a launch point for the weekend of the Common Ground fair just up the road in Unity. Felt very cozy and private. Could be great for a small group of people or just a couple like us.

Such a wonderful campground! We loved the cabin and it had everything we needed. Bathrooms were clean and the store and rec room were there with food supplies, games. Activities and such. The kids loved the jumping pillow and playground. We will definitely be back.
