Spacious Skies Balsam Woods is a hidden paradise of a campground located right in the heart of Maine, just a half hour south of Moosehead Lake, the largest lake in Maine, and 60 miles as the crow flies from the northern terminus of the Appalachian Trail, Mt. Katahdin, in Baxter State Park. We offer both wooded and open sites that can accommodate most rigs. Each site includes a picnic table, fire ring, water, 30 or 50-amp electrical service, and most offer sewer. Groups and tent campers are welcome. Balsam Woods campground is less than a minute’s drive from Piper Pond, a 2-mile-long lake with public boat launch and beach access. Onsite, we have a camp store and snack bar stocked with necessities, treats, and goodies for the whole family. There is no shortage of fun activities with our heated pool, classic rec hall, playground, a new jumping pillow, and gem mining! We have three cozy rustic cabins as well as three deluxe cabins for those wanting to experience the beauty of the great outdoors but who may not be ready for the tenter or RV life!

This is a quaint, off grid cabin located in Elliotsville, Me., surrounded by wilderness, next to the Appalachian Trail in the 100 Mile Wilderness. Firewood and propane and plenty of water at sink provided. 2 8ft kayaks for your use to explore all the ponds and lakes nearby. You can spend days or weeks exploring the area, hiking, biking, canoeing, mountain climbing and swimming. Its like going back in time a hundred years but you have some cell reception, unlike our ancestors. Have made several improvements to cabin not yet reflected in guest photos. Yeti type cooler provided for refrigeration of food for longer stays. The cabin is small but can accommodate 5 easily. Queen bed with bunk beds in 1st floor bedroom, full size and twin bed in upstairs bedroom. Clean linens provided. Open kitchen and living room. Seems like most people love it. Pretty sure you will too. So much to do in the area. Be as bored or as active as you want. Welcome book with directions to local spots all very close. Waterfalls, the most beautiful lake (Onawa), swimming holes... all close by. Appalachian trail out back. Other sites close by must be driven to but close by still, away from town. There is a fire pit when fires are permitted. The water hose is not available during the cold months, but drinking water is. Big Moose Inn Cabins & CampgroundIrving O. Hunt and his brother Lyman built some rough camps on Millinocket Lake before they became interested in the Nesowadnehunk Stream region. Whether or not their old camps were at the same site as the present camps on Millinocket Lake we do not know.The Millinocket Lake Camps, known today as Big Moose Inn, are located on a narrow spit of land separating Ambejejus Lake and Millinocket Lake. Before a dam controlled Ambajejus’ water level, it was possible to pole up the short stream from Millinocket Lake into Ambejejus.Fred Spencer build the camps, originally named Camp Eureka, in 1899 or 1900 and ran them with his brother. With the founding of Millinocket only a few years earlier and lumbering roads nearing Katahdin, the two lakes became more easily accessible. Camp Eureka was advertised as the only camp reachable by both boat (from Norcross) and road (from Millinocket). In 1905, the rate was $1.50 per day, meals included. Spencer also claimed the lakes had no flies or mosquitoes during spring and summer- a phenomenon caused by the way winds blow across the lakes, which makes it difficult for insects to gain a foothold.The camps’ name changed to Camp Spencer and later to Spencer’s Camps. Around 1929 the lease was transferred to Elmer Woodworth, who lived with his wife on a nearby island while they operated the camps. Elmer, a well-known guide, trapped over the winter, and his wife served as the camp cook. The couple soon renamed the camps Millinocket Lake Camps and Trading Post. They also maintained an outlying camp on Sandy Stream for their guests. In 1941, a major fire broke out in the area. The Woodworths saved the camps by wetting them down, but lost their island home when a stray spark jumped the cove. There is some evidence that, for a short time, a gentleman named Johnny Given either held the lease or managed the camps for the Woodworths. Except for that brief change the Woodworths operated the camps for many years until they passed the lease on to their son Ray, who ran them with his wife Muriel.In 1977, the lease was transferred to Bob and Frederica (“Teddy”) Boynton, who in 1981 sold the trading post to Erwin and Maureen Bacon. The Boyntons retained the sporting camp operation and later added a public restaurant. Teddy renamed the camps Big Moose Inn. Bob and his son Bruce made many renovations to the camps, while Teddy decorated and furnished them. The Boynton Family has remained involved in the success of the inn and restaurant. After Teddy’s death in 1991, management passed to Bruce and his sister Laurie, but Bob and other family members are still very involved.The dam separates the flowages of the two lakes. Millinocket Lake is about eight feet above its original level, and Ambajejus is now some 21 feet above its original level. Our cute off-grid 12x10 Cabins and our Extra Tiny Caboose replica are in a quiet woodland setting in Lincoln, Maine! 2 Adults Max / 420 Friendly / NO kids / Not Mobility friendly. We include queen bed and bedding (full in the caboose), towels, USB ports, 500 watt inverter, mosquito nets, communal areas include firepit, outdoor kitchen, event Outhouse with RV flush toilet and Little Buddy propane Heaters (May / Oct only). We ask that you provide drinking water, pack out your trash and bring your own firewood. Pets require a pet cleaning fee of $25, choose as an "extra" now at check-out as we don't process cards on-site. No dangerous breeds, aggressive or barking dogs. Animals like goats, turkey and cats in fairly close proximity, leash required, cannot be left on-site alone. Dog Park, Swimming and Gift shops very close!

Weekend Trip to The Borestone Bungalow

Had the most relaxing weekend away at this little cabin. I stayed for two nights but wish I could have stayed longer. With borestone mountain, little Wilson falls and ATV trails so close you don’t have to travel far for an adventure and Monson is an adorable little town to visit. Everything was so clean and kept up, the outhouse was the nicest I’d ever seen, even decorated! Great place to enjoy a book, some music, a fire, peace and quiet, or even a place to telework somewhere new with very good wifi. I was only my own but it would also be a great spot for a couple of small family. I will definitely be adding this to my list of places to return to.

We rented the entire campground for the weekend for our group of 20 and it was perfect. It's a beautiful site and the hosts are so accommodating. We plan to come back every year.

Weekend Trip to Owls Corner Cabin

Staying at the Owl’s Corner Cabin was great! The place was easy to find and Michelle gave us great directions. She was always eager to help and give us advice on things to do and explore near Clinton which made our stay much more unique and unforgettable. The amenities were clean, well kept and the cabin was isolated enough to feel good privacy (except good company from the owls). We really have no complaints. Everything was awesome and we’re hoping to come back!

3 nights at Spacious Skies Balsam Woods

Best campground for families with children and doggies! , they have a doggy 🐕 play area, pool, bouncy floor area, playground, gem mining area, rec room with bathrooms/showers inside and washing machines! And you HAVE to go out at night and see the beautiful stars !! Juay stare at the sky and let your eyes adjust for a few seconds! Cabin 1 is so far the best and a bit more private if you park your car sideways for a bit more privacy from the rv camper next to you and it's very close to all amenities like only steps away! So if you have little ones I highly suggest cabin 1!! Especially if you need to do late night bathroom trips or for washing your laundry etc! Also the camp store is connected to the amenities. The food is AMAZING tasted like your local restaurant the pizza is sooo cheesy and delicious 😋 tenders, mozerela sticks etc was so good, prices were really good too ! The staff of women i saw and interacted with are so friendly!!! The vibes was just perfect. Love it, highly recommend for families with children, they will love it! Also they have movie nights on Fridays 😊 it was worth the 5 hour trip! Also there were many with atvs so i bet those people had a blast too riding around! Also if your hesitant about bringing bicycles for your little ones , you totally should! The road is perfect for bikes , even saw little ones with training wheels riding around like nothing so perfect flooring !

Very cool remote and private spot. Also very quiet. We enjoyed star gazing and paddle around the pond. Dan was very responsive and sent along updates in a very timely manner. We would gladly return in we are in the area.

We had such a lovely trip. This newly built offgrid cabin is cozy and beautifully decorated. The showers and compostable toilet were very well designed and pristinely clean. It’s a fun location with wild blueberry picking in the summer and goats you can spot on the way in. The host Michelle is a great communicator and the directions were so nicely laid out. is My 9 year old and I enjoyed thoroughly and will be back :)

1 night at Owls Corner Cabin

This cabin is an absolute delight! Really, it was just what I would have wanted in a cabin in the woods, and nothing more. A clean simple cabin that smelled like the pretty wood it was made from, with a big queen air mattress as described, and a wood stove I could imagine loving in the winter. Super private, owls calling late into the night with all the other woodsy cricket and bird sounds. The fire pit is great, with a small pile of hardwood for us to use. You may want to have some smaller pieces of woods on hand for building the fire up, but it was also fun to search in the woods and figure it out like a puzzle. Nice composting toilet, and a little sink setup and little shower that we didn’t try. The stars were beautiful. I hope to come back sometime. Enjoy!

We just spent three nights at Dan’s wild and beautiful camp. It’s set on a peninsula on the pond, with sweeping views of the water and the mountains beyond. We enjoyed listening to the loons, walking the moss covered paths, and kayaking. Very peaceful. Thank you Dan for sharing this special place.

Weekend Trip to 100 Mile Wilderness Cabin

This cabin is so cozy and comfortable, and is perfectly situated in the wilderness. We hiked to the remote ponds of the area, paddled Onawa, and hiked up Borestone. It’s pure magic. Paul is a wonderfully attentive host and his little piece of heaven was so clean and well appointed. Can’t wait to be back. We have more exploring to do.

We loved the cabin for our short stay to visit friends in the area. The space was plentiful for our family (two adults and a toddler), and well stocked for our needs. Beautiful property, secluded, quiet, and a nice path to the waterfront. J (host) was very warm and welcoming, and made sure we had what we needed. Would definitely book again.

Very well kept property. Bathroom and shower were great. Pretty rustic and very rural. It had everything we needed. Didnt miss electricity. Propane, water, and firewood was well stocked. Close to the AT.

This cabin is fantastic! My husband and I have now stayed 3 times. It offers a change to unplug and recharge. Paul is wonderful and the space is everything you could ask for. The addition of the flushing toilet made our kids very happy.
