WELCOME TO BUTTE LA ROSE, THE HEART OF THE ATCHAFALAYA BASIN AND THE HEART OF ACADIANA:
In the early 1930s when the Army Corps of Engineers carved two long levees right through the Atchafalaya River Basin, what had once been a widely sprawling river system prone to seasonal flooding became a fifteen-mile-wide "spillway" contained between those two earthen walls. The water level in the Basin rose by several feet, permanently flooding many areas, and people who had made their homes there eventually moved to communities on the dry, western side of the levee--Henderson, Catahoula, Bayou Benoit and beyond--leaving no trace of the old settlements behind. Only one community remained. Perched on a ridge along the banks of the Atchafalaya River, Butte La rose is the only community in St. Martin Parish that is still located between the Basin levees. No other place can claim to be the heart of Atchafalaya as credibly as Butte La Rose can. The community is nestled against one of the more winding meanderings of the Atchafalaya River, and residents remain closely tied to the river and other nearby waterways--fishing, crawfishing, frogging and hunting, enjoying bayou-side crawfish boils and pleasure boating. So many waterways surround Butte La Rose--Butte La Rose Canal, Henderson Lake, Lake Begneaux, Lake Pelba--it's as close to an island as you can get without actually being an island.
We are only 3 miles from interstate 10 but we are a small remote camping village.

I stayed at what I think is the best spot—Campsite 2—and had a great experience. The water was beautiful, and the whole area felt peaceful and relaxing. Damon was helpful and let me know where water might collect if it rained. My dog and I weren’t bothered by anyone and really enjoyed the quiet. I’d definitely stay here again.

genuinely cannot say enough nice things about this Hipcamp. Phanat could not have been a lovelier host — he even shared king cake with me, which felt so special and personal. The space itself was peaceful and thoughtfully cared for, but what really stood out was what he’s building for the community. If you are visiting the New Iberia area, this is a great place to stay. It is an urban farm with many innovations. In this garden, you can see intensive gardening methods, water collection systems and even bio gas production. So it’s not only a convenient place to stay. Thanks for allowing me to you use land to do some cold weather camping, I couldn’t find the camp ground initially but i contacted the owners and Mr Andy I believe his name was.. quickly found me and led me to the camp ground.. he showed me around and told me if I needed anything to let him know.. I picked a area tucked away in the woods.. it was dark and peaceful and plenty of fire wood was available for a awesome fire.. the only slight con is I was awoke out my sleep to some dogs barking I am assuming they were over the fence but they seemed pretty close.. all in all I will be back and I recommend this campground for primitive tent camping
