Welcome to Big Branch Apiary, a 50 acre honey and blueberry farm north of Lake Pontchartrain. We're bounded by the Big Branch Wildlife Reserve to the south and a Rails to Trails bike path on the north. We are 3 miles from Lacombe to the east, 4 miles from Mandeville to the west, about 3 miles from Fountainbleu State Park, and an hour from New Orleans. Most of the farm is a mix of hardwood forest and wetlands. Desert Bayou and East Branch Bayou meander across the property. The farm has deer, foxes, bobcats, owls, fireflies, otters, raccoons, turtles, and, well, about anything common to the wilds of the Gulf South. This includes a litany of snakes, mosquitoes, and deer flies in season. About 8 acres are used to raise poultry, bees and organically farmed blueberries. Overall, the land feels primordial and pristine. We are a designated Monarch Waystation and in the spring and fall see many migrating butterflies. We cultivate a lot of flowers so almost year round you can see butterflies in profusion. We are part of the USDAs Conservation Stewardship Program, concentrating on protecting and increasing habitat for animals and pollinators. Pets are welcome but please leash them. Campfires are allowed except on rare occasions. You can hunt for deadfalls in the woods on the farm, or we can provide firewood for a small fee. Our honey, fresh eggs, and homemade sourdough can be purchased as well. This is a rustic situation: think dry camping, outdoor (heated) shower, and outhouses. We have a tiny treehouse, an A-frame, a glamping tent, and several places to pitch a tent. The farm is pretty secure--someone is on-site most of the time, it's gated, and there are security cameras at access points. But it is a farm in a rural community--you may hear roosters crow, sheep bleat, dogs bark, and the sounds of owls, hawks, coyotes, and other native wildlife. The water level in the Basin rose by several feet, permanently flooding many areas, and people who had made their homes there eventually moved to communities on the dry, western side of the levee--Henderson, Catahoula, Bayou Benoit and beyond--leaving no trace of the old settlements behind. Only one community remained. Perched on a ridge along the banks of the Atchafalaya River, Butte La rose is the only community in St. Martin Parish that is still located between the Basin levees. No other place can claim to be the heart of Atchafalaya as credibly as Butte La Rose can. The community is nestled against one of the more winding meanderings of the Atchafalaya River, and residents remain closely tied to the river and other nearby waterways--fishing, crawfishing, frogging and hunting, enjoying bayou-side crawfish boils and pleasure boating. So many waterways surround Butte La Rose--Butte La Rose Canal, Henderson Lake, Lake Begneaux, Lake Pelba--it's as close to an island as you can get without actually being an island. The property is an old homestead recently reclaimed and being brought back to life after many years abandoned. Early 1800s Bulgarian immigrants started a little community here called Stein. The old railroad used to pass through and there are alot of artifacts scattered throughout the property. We are in the process of cleaning up the old cabin built in late 1800s suprisingly still standing. The hardwood forest has a creek running through that is virtually untouched and home to wildlife of all kinds. Birds and wildlife of all kinds have a home here and no hunting allowed. Some trails have been cut and there are some natural trails for exploring the property through the hardwoods and campers are welcome to make new ones. A spring fed pond is great for fishing or just relaxing under the majestic live oaks. If Mushroom foraging is your thing you are in luck after a nice rain. This place had the best of southeast Louisiana and truly is a hidden gem. We are still in the clearing process so there are alot of projects going on but we definitely have some cool spots to pitch a tent. Host is on property in shipping container and willing to make accommodations as needed as we have electricity but are pretty much off the grid.. do not have an outdoor bathroom but could set something up with little effort. Have running water for solar shower or creek bath if you'd rather. Since we are still rebuilding there are some piles of lumber and things that may be unsafe for small children and animals. I have 2 dogs on the property with me but are fenced and friendly. If you have any questions just ask!

We can wine and dine you at the plantation dinner table with home cooked Louisiana cuisine (optional for an extra cost) & get you liquored up with mint juleps, homemade absinthe, mix drinks, etc. anywhere on the plantation grounds is acceptable to pitch a tent and make a campfire. we can provide wood, & possible minimal electricity to your camp area for now. there is access to water at the greenhouse area, as well as electricity. the greenhouse is a culinary herb farm and nursery, no smoking tobacco near the nursery and greenhouse area.

I would most definitely recommend Damon's land for camping! It was peaceful and quiet but not too far from town. As a solo female camper, I felt safe. Having access to the RV (which could have been a little cleaner, but was not the worst public bathroom I've seen!) with a flush toilet, hot running water, and shower was a game changer for my trip ~ I had planned to split my 2 week vacation between camping and hostels, but decided to camp the whole time! I will camp on Damon's land again the next time I am in Louisiana!

Wow this wonderful place is not only charming but has so much to do around it. Ginny & Scotty are the most wonderful hosts. Ginny has all information for you when you arrive about restaurants, local pubs, 100 yr old store that was a gem. They have a very level spot with a picnic table, Tiki torches and a very nice porch to sit and enjoy getting to know each other. We cant wait to come back.

Awesome site! Very nice and easy access right off the road. We arrived late at night and were able to drive right in and hookup since the host had provided extension connections for all services. Very quiet location and very well maintained. Hosts were very kind and provided us with printed local information for the area as well as a small gift. Would definitely visit again the next time we are in the area!

Ended up not staying overnight due to extraneous circumstances, had a picnic under a gigantic oak next to a small creek. The scene was wonderful and felt pretty private. We heard a car drive past once or twice during the daylight hours, but you could easily ignore it with the sound of a crackling campfire. There was a separate area that felt even more private, and that is where we'd stay for an overnight. The site is covered by tree branches and is just magical. Ashley was a wonderful host and even educated us a bit on the land. Definitely hoping to come back in the future for an overnight for sure!

This campsite is beautiful. The host, Damon, is a wonderful guy. He does live on-site which wasn't an issue, in fact, I felt safer knowing he was around. The upkeep on the property is well done. Damon allowed us to move sites when we realized we weren't getting as much shade as we wanted in the peak of the day. Our dogs had plenty of room the explore and run. My husband and I were so impressed that we extended our stay. Other notes: This property isn't super remote. Yes there are neighbors and traffic but nothing remotely as bad as a hotel by the interstate or even a KOA.

Absolutely the sweetest hosts we have ever encountered. We ended up with car trouble just before we hit the campsite and they were so kind and helpful. Upon arrival we recieved a brochure highlighting local history and attractions complete with good recommendations and sites to see, and even a welcome gift. We decided to stay an extra night. Hosts are friendly and kind, site it well kept and peaceful, and the setting couldn’t be more lovely.
