WELCOME TO BUTTE LA ROSE, THE HEART OF THE ATCHAFALAYA BASIN AND THE HEART OF ACADIANA:
In the early 1930s, when the Army Corps of Engineers carved two long levees right through the Atchafalaya River Basin, what had once been a widely sprawling river system prone to seasonal flooding became a fifteen-mile-wide "spillway" contained between those two earthen walls. The water level in the Basin rose by several feet, permanently flooding many areas, and people who had made their homes there eventually moved to communities on the dry, western side of the levee--Henderson, Catahoula, Bayou Benoit and beyond--leaving no trace of the old settlements behind. Only one community remained. Perched on a ridge along the banks of the Atchafalaya River, Butte La Rose is the only community in St. Martin Parish that is still located between the Basin levees. No other place can claim to be the heart of Atchafalaya as credibly as Butte La Rose can. The community is nestled against one of the more winding meanderings of the Atchafalaya River, and residents remain closely tied to the river and other nearby waterways--fishing, crawfishing, frogging, and hunting, enjoying bayou-side crawfish boils and pleasure boating. So many waterways surround Butte La Rose--Butte La Rose Canal, Henderson Lake, Lake Begneaux, Lake Pelba--it's as close to an island as you can get without actually being an island.
We are only 3 miles from Interstate 10, but we are a small remote camping village.
Many hummingbirds visit here every year. They arrive in March and leave in Sept.

We are located at the dead end of a quiet one-mile road called “Happywoods.” Our camp, built on piers, is situated in the wetlands along the Tickfaw River and adjacent to Tickfaw State Park.
We overlook a wilderness sanctuary home to turtles, alligators, beavers, and otters, along with a variety of water birds among the wildlife. The camp is centered around a 300-plus-year-old cypress tree.
The space
The cabin is an open-concept design with high ceilings and two open lofts for sleeping. The bathroom includes a sliding door for privacy. There are two walk-up decks for entering the cabin from the outside. Below the cabin is a long, semi-covered deck. Directly beneath the cabin is an additional sink, as well as two toilets and two showers. The camp is situated on two acres of land with adjacent wetlands on two sides.

The fenced-in site is in a well lived in, low-income, busy neighborhood of New Iberia. The hosts live in the small brick cottage in front. The property is surrounded by gardens for guests to enjoy. There is a 15AMP regular outlet to plug into and a nearby water hose for travelers to use. We used to have a white German sheperd "Peanut" but he passed away in 2025. So that's the dog seen in some pics. There is a little dog "Lithium" (terrier mix) that stays on the property and will be out sometimes but generally stays inside the camper belonging to our groundskeeper Jenn.

The lodge sleeps 10 across 2 bedrooms and a loft. Bedroom 1 has a king bed. Bedroom 2 has two twin-over-full bunk beds. The loft includes two additional twin-over-full bunk beds. There are 2.5 bathrooms. Every stay includes fresh linens, towels, and a fully equipped kitchen with a dishwasher, coffee maker, and Keurig.
What sets PVL apart from every other rental in the area is the private boat launch and two private boat slips right on the property. No trailer lines. No crowded public ramps. You pull up, launch, and you’re in open water in minutes—a major advantage when the bite is on at first light or during tournament weekends when public ramps are full.
We also offer abundant trailer parking on-site, night fishing lights, a fish cleaning station with running water, an outdoor freezer to bag and freeze your catch, and upper and lower screened decks to watch shrimp boats drift by at sunset.

This is a fantastic place to stay if you're visiting Atchafalaya Basins. The house is comfortable and well-equipped, with plenty of thoughtful details that make a real difference. Ginny and her husband were also incredibly helpful and shared some great local recommendations during our stay. And if you're lucky, you may even be welcomed by a few hummingbirds! Highly recommended.

The patio area is a very quiet and relaxing place to unwind and watch the dozen or so hummingbirds that fly back and forth to their feeders, and the hosts were the kind of people you wish were your neighbors back home. Lovely little spot! We stayed in the RV and it was perfect for our needs. Comfortable, cozy RV, bed was comfy. If it had not been raining we would have really enjoyed the outdoor patio area also. Everything was provided for, including a private ref and insights and tips about the area/vicinity. Its a great place to be outside of a big city and to see some of the water bodies in LA. The bird watching was very cool, and the rabbits too.

Weekend Trip to Kickin' it in the Butte
Ginny and Scotty were very friendly and hospitable. I was on a friend's trip with 3 others. We rented the RV on site which was perfect for our overnight stay. The RV was so cute and had everything we needed. We went to Pat's for dinner and ordered Ginny's recommendation - the crab cakes and the seafood gumbo with okra - Delish! Before the stay, they answered many questions and were even ready to act as a shuttle for our kayak camping excursion on Bayou Berard. I would come back and have already recommended this place to others.
