WELCOME TO BUTTE LA ROSE, THE HEART OF THE ATCHAFALAYA BASIN AND THE HEART OF ACADIANA:
In the early 1930s when the Army Corps of Engineers carved two long levees right through the Atchafalaya River Basin, what had once been a widely sprawling river system prone to seasonal flooding became a fifteen-mile-wide "spillway" contained between those two earthen walls. The water level in the Basin rose by several feet, permanently flooding many areas, and people who had made their homes there eventually moved to communities on the dry, western side of the levee--Henderson, Catahoula, Bayou Benoit and beyond--leaving no trace of the old settlements behind. Only one community remained. Perched on a ridge along the banks of the Atchafalaya River, Butte La rose is the only community in St. Martin Parish that is still located between the Basin levees. No other place can claim to be the heart of Atchafalaya as credibly as Butte La Rose can. The community is nestled against one of the more winding meanderings of the Atchafalaya River, and residents remain closely tied to the river and other nearby waterways--fishing, crawfishing, frogging and hunting, enjoying bayou-side crawfish boils and pleasure boating. So many waterways surround Butte La Rose--Butte La Rose Canal, Henderson Lake, Lake Begneaux, Lake Pelba--it's as close to an island as you can get without actually being an island.
We are only 3 miles from interstate 10 but we are a small remote camping village.
Many hummingbirds visit here every year. They arrive in March and leave in Sept.

6 nights at Kickin' it in the Butte
Had a good time, it was very comfortable. Ginny was very kind and accommodating, including my requests related to mitigating emf sources. Everything was provided for, including a private ref and insights and tips about the area/vicinity. Its a great place to be outside of a big city and to see some of the water bodies in LA. The bird watching was very cool, and the rabbits too.

This place is amazing! The owners are the warmest, kindest people imaginable. Their property is full of birds, rabbits, and other fun critters. The RV was super comfortable and had everything we needed. Can't recommend this spot enough!

Weekend Trip to Kickin' it in the Butte
Ginny and Scotty were very friendly and hospitable. I was on a friend's trip with 3 others. We rented the RV on site which was perfect for our overnight stay. The RV was so cute and had everything we needed. We went to Pat's for dinner and ordered Ginny's recommendation - the crab cakes and the seafood gumbo with okra - Delish! Before the stay, they answered many questions and were even ready to act as a shuttle for our kayak camping excursion on Bayou Berard. I would come back and have already recommended this place to others.
