THE "OKINA", at Paradise Unplugged, is a clean and private cabin that allows you to experience THE REAL HAWAII. This will give you an opportunity to stay within Hawaii's Largest Collection of Rainforest Tikis. Upon your arrival, you will experience our amazing Tiki collection along with our tropical plant nursery which includes over 300 rare Hapuu Ferns. You will see the many ways we live off grid in the Hawaiian jungle. ALOHA! Upon arrival, you will be greeted by our 7 life sized tiki statues that represent the game of chess. These tiki statues sit along a fence that was created using 100% recycled pallets. Once you enter the outdoor foyer, you will once again be greeted by 4 more life sized tiki statues. Upon entering the property, you will walk through our natural lava rock path called "The Horse Shoe". To the right you will see our rare collection of Hapuu Ferns along with other tropical plants from our nursery. To the left will be another 4 tiki statues from our collection ranging in sizes from 6 to 20 feet. All of our tiki statues are original pieces of artwork that are 100% hand carved. Along "The Horse Shoe" path you will also see several lava rock sculptures along with a "Rasta" sculpture that is insitu and still in the process of being created. After about a 100 foot walk, you will arrive at "The Okina" guesthouse. The Okina is a unique structure built from 100% recycled pallets! The hallways and sleeping area is about 100 sqft and features several pieces of original mixed media artwork and a futon style bed. We offer open spaced hallways along with a private lanai for you relax in and enjoy the tropical scenery. The hallway with black pillars and stringed bamboo will lead you to a unique indoor/outdoor jungle bathroom that is lined with totem poles that are 100% hand carved. There is an off grid igloo water cooler containing unheated non potable water. The composting toilet is designed to be used as a future fertilizer producer for our tropical gardens. "The Okina" is a prime example of off-grid jungle living. Electricity is provided by mini "solar bricks" that will charge cell phones or tablets. Lights are battery operated. Our non-potable lava rock filtered water is naturally caught and is provided daily from our "Water House". We strive to keep The Okina as clean as possible, so we do not offer a kitchen and we do not allow cooking. Please remember the paths are natural uneven lava rock so guests must be able to walk on an even lava rock path. Guests have free range to enjoy the outdoor tiki collection and tropical garden full of Hapuu Ferns in "the Horse Shoe". Please take as many photos as you like, but remember the tiki statues are made from heavy Ohia wood. So we kindly ask our guests to look but please do not touch the original tiki statues. There is a large communal kitchen (a 16' x 16' kitchen cabin) that you can use free of charge, and an outdoor shower with hot water. In the summer, the greenhouse in the fenced paddock is full of vegetables. Free-ranging ducks and chickens supply eggs. There is an outdoor lounge area complete with a six-person picnic table, BBQ, four hammocks, and torches. Please note that the owner lives on the premises in their own cabin, 20 feet away from the yurt. The homestead is run by 6,000 watt solar-power and a rain-catchment system with a 4,500 gallon water tank. This is a peaceful place to relax and recuperate from the din of city life. There are no street lights, just the stars and moon after sunset. On a clear night, the sky is full of stars. It rains often in this area and the sound is soothing to fall asleep to. Volcano National Park is only 15 minutes away by car; Punaluʻu black sand beach is 30 minutes; Ka Lae (South Point) is about 1.5 hours; and Hoʻokena Bay is about two hours. As a full-time host and tour guide, I take pride is giving people the best experiences possible while on island! Our properties are cozy and provide everything you will need being your home away from home while on vacation! Learn more about this land: The ultimate local experience while providing comforts to make your stay enjoyable. Live in traditional Hawaiian style homes! For guests unfamiliar with the Big Island, it is not like the other islands people travel to. If Oahu is more Americanized, the Big Island is still more of a Polynesian Island. Our property allows guests to enjoy a genuine local experience. The cabins have power and endless hot water. All water on property is rainwater harvested from our roof! At night your ears will be greeted by the forest with sounds of coqui frogs. Many people love them 🐸 Please search for Bathing Suits and Rain Boots on YouTube to find a video of what our property sounds like at night. Our channel also features videos of tours we offer. More to be uploaded, check back often! Our tours include off the beaten path adventures ranging from sunrises and geothermal Kings baths, to prawn hunting to hikes that lead to waterfalls! They are all local gems that you will not find online or offered by any other tour guide agency. We are updating our ig @bathingsuitsandrainboots regularly with footage from adventures as well! Beach gear such as surf boards, boogie boards and snorkel gear is also available. There is a detailed welcome packet with a variety of mostly free but some paid must see/do activities on the island! There are a total of 4 cabins on the one acre lot. The owners are on property, other guests may or may not be here as well. There is a dog Valentine, two outdoor cats named Ghost and Tomi, and chickens/ducks. Each cabin has a queen mattress. We rent both cabins out for larger groups. Jungle massages are available on site starting at $100 for the hour. Please note the main image capturing a lava cliff sunrise is not visible from the cabin. It is about a 30-40 minute drive from us 🌊 ☀️ 🌋 We are at 1880ft elevation so it can get chilly at night. Winters are also rainy season so if traveling to the Big Island in the winter, I suggest some light layers for warmth, a raincoat and rain boots.
