The property is located on Maui island in the Kula district on the drier side of Haleakala. In days before western contact the area was heavily forested with native plants and trees and rainfall was abundant. The native Hawaiian grew bananas, taro and sweet potato. After Western contact businessmen mostly from the United States developed huge tracts of land for ranching and farming which cleared the native forests and destroyed the eco system from the mountain to the sea. Many of the Hawaiian people moved away nearer to the towns and immigrant Chinese laborers from the ranches and plantations moved in. The Chinese brought in the Wattle tree to plant for firewood as these trees grew very fast. These are the majority of the trees that you see today. As part of the Chinese immigration, the founder of modern China, Sun Yat Sen lived here for a time and planned his revolution to overthrow the last Chinese Dynasty. If you are planning to go to Haleakala, we are about 45 -60 minutes to the summit. We are also on the south side approach to Hana. There is a great restaurant for breakfast and lunch about 10 minutes away in Keokea town called Grandma's Coffee house.

I had a wonderful peaceful experience. I received very thorough clear directions to the location prior to my arrival. My cabin was the perfect and cozy setup for my three night stay. I had everything I needed for a memorable stay on Alika’s land. If you love stargazing, this is thr place to see them all. If i return to Maui, I will most certainly book another stay on Alika’s Land.

The bungahigh cabin had amazing views and was in a good location for exploring the east side of the island! Nancy was very kind and made check in super easy. Everything was as described and we appreciated the supplies for bugs, thankfully the bugs weren’t bad though. Definitely a camping feel with a comfortable bed.

This was a unique and beautiful experience to share with people living in and off the valley land of Big Island. If you’re an experienced camper/adventure seeker you’ll love this stay. You meet at the top of the valley and hike or drive down. Joel and his friend Kama were very helpful in making sure we were comfortably set up for our stay. My partner and I learned so much about what life is like in the valley and the land itself. There is a deep respect for the people and land here, and all guests should come with this shared respect and curiosity. They were extremely generous with their time, space, and knowledge. Joel showed us how to harvest food that we then cooked together in the outdoor kitchen space. We then explored the nearby secluded black sand beach where we played with Yoshi, the resident dog🐕 If you’re lucky you’ll meet the most affectionate host, Ulu 🐈 An unforgettable stay! We hope to return some day

Staying here was truly one of the most unique and special experiences of our big island trip — the highlight, without question. Jo’el and Kama were incredibly generous and welcoming hosts who made us feel like part of their world. They brought such warmth and fun to the entire stay. This isn’t your typical stay — it’s an authentic, local experience that comes with its own quirks and adventures. But that’s exactly what makes it magical. We got to pick fresh fruit from the orchard, cook meals in the outdoor kitchen, and experience life the way locals do. The secluded black sand beach nearby was absolutely stunning, and we even got to play Yoshi ball with Yoshi the dog and hang out with Ulu the cat — both total stars of the place. If you’re looking for something real, grounding, and unforgettable, this is it. We absolutely loved every minute and would recommend it 100%.

Very cute little place, nothing fancy but do you really need a fancy place to sleep??? We prefer to spend our time exploring on vacation not hanging around the house. The house was clean and had everything we needed and a few we never knew we needed. Carol was very sweet and showed us around the property along with history of the area and where to go for supplies. We would definitely stay here again.

We had a wonderful stay in Carol's tiny home. She truly shares the true Aloha spirit here on the Big Island. Her place was great for my dog Tyga. The dog run was set up in a beautiful yard that shares the outhouse. The outhouse was clean and easy to use. All and all a 10 for the price and privacy. We look forward to returning for another stay. We loved our stay at the cabins. Everything was clearly thought out and functional. We were grateful for them providing towels, beach towels, hand-soap, propane canisters, and extra blankets. The stars each night were incredible from the property and the picnic tables underneath the pavilion were a perfect place to have dinner. Having drinking water on site was a HUGE blessing! Things were clean and tidy and we would recommend this site to all.

The cabin was setup perfectly- I really admire the flawlessly configured light sensors and timers which made navigating in the dark easy yet as unobtrusive as possible. The shower setup was excellent and the area very quiet and comfortable. The beds were very comfortable and we slept great. Grandma’s cafe up the road has terrific food and coffee. Highly recommend this camp.

I had an incredible stay with Jo'el at his camp in Waipio Valley. Jo'el has lived there for many years and is a true steward of the land. He's knowledgeable about the history of the Valley, the nourishment it provides and it's sacred history that he's proud to share with guest. For campers be prepared- the camp is a little over a mile from where you will be able to park and you must carry everything you need for your stay in on your back. Jo'el was the most thoughtful host- sharing food from the land, guiding me through the valley to waterfalls and his camp is built onto the side of the valley walls providing spectacular views and sunrises. My only regret is that I wasn't able to stay longer! Thank you Jo'el, hope to be back soon!

100% happy to return to this special hideaway. There was everything I needed like basic comforts in a running toilet and goood bed amongst amazing nature. Then there was things I didn’t know I needed like Nancy’s banana bread, it was gone instantly! Best sleep and views I’d had in recent memory. My only wish was that there was a sky light in the roof so I could see the stars and trees above my bed, and if the water didn’t have a strong chlorine smell when I used it (obviously not for drinking.) The little things like the lantern, dishes and comforter all are such thoughtful ideas to make sure guests have a pleasant stay. Mahalo for your hospitality! I hope to visit again
