We absolutely loved our short stay at the Tranquil Homestead! The cabin was in a beautiful location, very clean, and was stocked with everything we could’ve possibly needed for a comfortable stay. Additionally, Christopher & Esther were very welcoming and responsive - they graciously gave us a tour of their land when we first arrived, assisted us with navigation, and provided wonderful recommendations on restaurants/activities during our stay. I would recommend this hipcamp to anyone visiting the Big Island!!

My sister and I stayed here for two days while exploring the surrounding area- and I can’t say enough good things about the property, Patrick and Brian, and our accommodations. Everything was so thoughtful and comfortable, falling asleep to the sound of frogs at night and waking up for homemade breakfast each morning was such a treat. Patrick and Brian were so knowledgeable and more than willing to answer any question we had, and it really felt like we were staying with friends. Showering (hot water!) surrounded by foliage was perfection as well. If we’re ever on the big island again- we’d stay here in a heartbeat.

Our stay at this "Off Grid" cabin was pure magic. The setting is absolutely stunning—tucked among striking Rainbow Eucalyptus trees that make the entire property feel like a hidden tropical dream. The natural beauty here is unreal, and the peaceful atmosphere made it easy to unwind and disconnect. The cabin itself was spotless, cozy, and perfectly suited for a restful escape. Everything was thoughtfully maintained, and you can tell the hosts care deeply about the space and their guests. Speaking of the hosts—they were incredible! So warm, friendly, and welcoming. Their hospitality truly made our stay even more special. One of the unexpected joys of our visit was spending time with the Muscovy ducks. They were such a delightful part of the experience—full of personality and charm. We loved watching them waddle around the homestead! We honestly wish we could have stayed longer. This place is a true gem, and we’re already dreaming of coming back. Highly, highly recommend!

We had such a beautiful and peaceful stay at The Tranquil Duck! The property is serene, charming, and surrounded by nature—truly the perfect escape. We especially loved the rainbow eucalyptus trees right outside the homestead; they added such a magical touch to the surroundings. Christopher and Esther were incredibly sweet and helpful, going above and beyond to make us feel welcome. They were also so flexible and kind in allowing our pups to stay, who had an amazing time exploring the property and soaking in the fresh air. They even took the time to give us an extensive list of recommendations, which made our trip even more enjoyable and stress-free. We’re already looking forward to coming back and would absolutely love to stay here again. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing and memorable getaway!

Io's nest was a gorgeous and comfortable stay! Coqui frogs and the sound of rain on the metal roof was soothing and easily serenaded us to sleep. Close to Akaka Falls (an easy 30 ish min walk right from the stay). The host (Krystle) was super responsive, gave good explicit directions. Comfy bed with stellar views, especially of the sunrise over the ocean. Nice to have a sink right on site, with access to a bathroom and outdoor shower nearby. Strongly recommend staying here!

Weekend Trip to FlashTown

Down to Earth, down the trail to a hot shower. Like sleeping on flower pillows. Mr. Host has energy and ideas free of charge. Attentive and informational as the sun goes down. A calico cat in the middle of the night followed me into our room but responded very well to fake shooshes finally squirtching under the door and out of our dreams. It is the one that meows, you will know it if you hear it or are a midnight star gazer. He made all the adjustments and reached out just enough to not feel like someone is watching, very respectful of our privacy at the same time comfortable. No plugins in our room so our phones died and we slept in, he was understanding like an old friend. I hope he liked us. No offense but most hosts I could care less. I hope Jesse liked us. If we get a chance to go back which we will. I will bring a Rose bush in honor of the City of Roses. Then he can use his chicken coop cleanup and pond water on the roses!

My husband and I loved that Esther and Christopher's hospitality made us feel like family. Their property was beautiful! The little cabin we rented was a perfect space for two. The bathroom, adorable and a porch where you could get fresh air and admire the beauty of Hawaii Island was amazing. And then there were their ducks that greeted us in the mornings! Wow we absolutely LOVED our stay at the duck farm!!! Chris and Esther were fantastic hosts and have an awesome property that we were so grateful that they shared with us!! The tiny home that we got to stay in was perfect!! They thought of everything to make it feel like home. The bed was comfortable, shower was hot and spacious, kitchen was perfect to cook and eat in, lanai was absolutely gorgeous and the whole space was very private and close to Volcano National Park!! Also, the ducks are amazing!!! So sweet and fun to interact with and feed. They love the treats Mom and Dad left them as well as our tasty banana peels!! Speaking of bananas and ducks, the bananas and duck eggs that we purchased from Chris and Esther's farm were delicious!! Best eggs we have ever eaten. If you're thinking of staying near the national park or just visiting this beautiful homestead farm stop thinking about it and just do it!! Your private space is a 20'x10' raised cabin that offers covered outdoor space as well as indoor accommodations. You will find the inside furnished with two full spring mattress bunk beds, a small eating bar overlooking our backyard area with two stool seats, a personal work area with an accommodating cooler for perishables (Please provide ice or we can arrange for block ice from our local general store if desired), and personal clothing storage, as well as wi-fi options. Your private cabin space does have full electricity separate from the commons, but still off grid so please refrain from using strong energy draw items like hair wands or instant heaters, such electrical items are not suited for off-grid electrical systems. Our Common space is open from 7a.m.-10p.m. During this time, you will have full access to a shared kitchen, as well a full bathroom with both an indoor and outdoor shower. The bathroom is available around the clock but after-hours hot water is off so please be aware if you're planning on taking a midnight shower. Please let us know if you need any amenities such as hot water or wi-fi after 10p.m. or before 7a.m. Please make note of these times and being off grid means that we schedules use of high energy items with the daylight hours, and we will set a timer for your convenience of smaller items like internet with advanced notice, otherwise we are very energy efficient in the commons, this is hipcamp, so please don't mistake us for a Hilton :) We are currently home to 4 wonderful dogs that may greet you as you drive up, 3 spectacular cats, 1 mischievous parrots, 3 goats, 12 chickens and 1 rooster. So please know there are animals present than are part of our Ohana. We ask for you to take into consideration that we are a "Working homestead" and we are "Off Grid" so there will be projects much like any farm setting, for this reason we are not suitable for infants or young Children. There are animals that can make noises, there are mulch piles always moving around, compost piles that might not be your cup of tea because they smell, but they certainly make great compost teas to help the flowers grow that smell beautiful right outside your window! There are small projects that may look like clutter, such as seed saving, or canning, but those small clutters grow the plants that fill those jars! On occasion we have people who overlook this reality of nature and our connection to it... possibly because they've seen too many staged reality shows or maybe they have never visited a real farm in person before, but we are grateful that the overwhelming majority of people who have had this attitude have left with an appreciation for nature many expressed they never knew they had!! Those guests have filled our hearts with their kind gratitude :) This is a place full of joyful work for us, so please understand we are a destination for many who love nature, and if you're afraid of dirt or nature in general, this might be a great opportunity to connect with what has always been waiting for you to discover!! Guest accessThe last two blocks into our homestead are rock road as we are a rural location. We will provide a map upon booking with the best access through our Ag-lots for your convenience. Please travel safe and plan for our check-in between 3p.m. and 9p.m. with early and late check-in avalible with approved notice :) Parking is available to either side at the end of the driveway. Other things to noteAlittle about our homestead;Please understand that we are off-grid, and while we've been off grid 8 years now, we've only been hosting stays like this for 3 years, and we see that we are a destination for many visitors looking for a nature bathing kind of experience, but it's not everyone' cup of coffee... Sooo speaking of coffee, if you are looking for things like an General Electric coffee pot or any electric coffee maker (that are literally designed to wastes energy to just make money) we probably aren't the best fit for your stay ... BUT ... If you want to experience home grown Cacao added to fresh ground coffee brewed Italian style to make an amazing Mocha, FRESH, then we can easily make that while showing you some great energy saving ideas to take home :) like make coffee the way our great grandparents made coffee, it tastes better and is really easier than one may think! We share some toasted homemade sourdough bread out of fresh harvested stocks too, but it again isn't an energy guzzling shinny toaster that does the toasting, it is a cast iron skillet that we toast on, just like our great grandparents did too... Actually one of my favorite skillets belonged to my Great Grandma, so this is the real deal :) Come up and join us when we turn the commons on at 7a.m. if you're interested. We have very little light pollution which will afford beautiful star gazing on clear nights, and epic full moons!! But this means that you should use a flashlight or headlamp which we can provide at your leisure. We don't poop in a bucket in the woods, we actually have a working toilet, and Hot water for showers, a gas powered full range stove. But we also compost and make methane for 100% green energy use... There are chickens and goats, parrots, Dogs & Cats. We have been told by some that it is too cluttered, and by others you make me our home look clean our kitchen table (3'x9') always has some sort of a project on it. One guest said they were so happy to see so much going on as they sat watching us make bread, while another was upset that they didn't have a private kitchen. We feel we are very affordable for what we have to share, and if you feel this description will not fit your needs, then please don't book us because we're affordable. Trust us if we could offer a private kitchen it would only raise our price. We really hope more than anything to share and inspire what a homestead is, and that even in a suburb, or a rural apartment there are small things we can do to save energy and bring ourselves closer to nature!!

If you love East Hawaii and eco-friendly accommodations, you'll love our off-grid location! We have maintained a 5-star review and guest favorite rating on another site, but due to the national boycott concerns we have decided to try hosting on this platform. We can provide past reviews upon request. The cabin is a single room with a queen sized bed. There is a covered outdoor minimalist kitchen that includes a refrigerator, propane camp stove, hot and cold sink, filtered bottled water and outdoor seating. Please note that we are off-grid, so there is no microwave oven. Attached to the cabin is an outdoor hot shower on one side and a private composting toilet on the other side. Solar provides electricity for the refrigerator and lamp only. There are no outlets available for high energy use such as hairdryers. Our house is approximately 200ft away with palms and mango trees growing between our house and the cabin. Electric fencing surrounds the entire driveway and building compound. It keeps our local feral pig friends from destroying our driveway and garden area. Parking is provided next to the cabin.

Because of the 2018 Lava Eruption we do not have a GPS location address to our farm. Once you get to the GPS address provided, you're going to continue onto where the pavement meets black lava. Drive up towards the gate where we will be in our car to meet you and escort you out to our property through private land access. It's a real unique adventure!
