If you’re especially sensitive to mosquitos, bugs, geckos, free roaming chickens or other elements to be expected in nature, this might not be the place for you.
Waimanalo is a small agricultural town filled with nurseries, horse stables, and a high concentration of Hawaiian homes. It remains mostly undeveloped and authentic, and we aim to keep it that way. Outsiders do not often get the opportunity to stay back here, but we welcome respectful travelers looking for an authentic experience who can appreciate this privilege.
While nestled against the mountains, we're just a five minute drive from the beach. We are fifteen minutes from Kailua town, where you'll find several grocery stores, shops, and restaurants.
This is a working farm. While we are very hospitable, we are not in the business of hospitality. I am happy to accommodate travelers, but I am not here at your beck and call. If that is the experience you are seeking, I think you would be happier elsewhere. We appreciate all of your bookings, and profits go directly back into farm infrastructure and new fruit trees. The campsites and cottage are located in the woods near a shower and flushing toilet and the property is off grid with the goal to establish an example of sustainable lifestyles and ecosystems. Camping equipment is available upon request and the cottage is furnished with a basic kitchen. The grounds also include a screen room with a grill, tables, chairs and a fire pit. Local fruits and vegetables are grown on the property and the greenhouse provides food. Solitude is available for those who seek silence and immersion in nature and a number of state and county beaches are within a forty minute drive. The focus is providing a quiet environment and an opportunity for solitude away from the distractions of urban lifestyles. Beaches are about forty five minutes and the drive to Hilo is about 25 miles.

One of the most beautiful places in Hawai`i. We are at the top of a hill in a secluded and secure Homestead farm overlooking Kane`ohe Bay and Mokapu (and the Marine Corps Base) as well as the Pali (cliffs). We are nestled, in a jungle, in the Ko`olau mountain range. We have ocean access from the property (by crossing the road). Nearly are places to get in the water (such as Ka`a`awa and Ku`aloa Beach Park). We are also close to civilization and Kualoa Ranch.
We generally see the stars and the sun and moon rise. We also see the colors of the Bay change with the tides, clouds, wind, light.
We are focused on education about Hawai`i, being kind to animals (and all life, including humans), and we are privileged to be able to share our aloha as well as farm bounty. We grow chili peppers, ulu (breadfruit), kalo (taro), noni, vegetables, bananas, olena (turmeric), ginger, etc.
Not pictured is the common kitchen area.
We have access to Reiki, massage, and other types of services. We have kayaks, surfboards, general snorkel and beach gear, SUPs, and connections to local businesses for other opportunities (e.g., horseback riding, sailing, rowing, etc.).
There are surfing, kayaking, swimming, snorkeling, scuba, horseback riding, and hiking options nearby. We are also conveniently near a mall and many great places to eat. It is also lovely to hang out here at the farm and enjoy the peace, away from concrete and traffic congestion. There are places to explore and a steep climb one can hike to get to the edge of the property where there are many and even more spectacular views.
We are a real homestead and aspiring organic farm focused on Hawaiian Heritage plants and a Sanctuary for animals. We have many Native Hawaiian plants, superfoods, and culturally important plants. We also have Bucket and Scream (our goats), Venus, Zenith, and Sweetie (farm cats), Ipo (Australian Shepard farm dog), turkeys (Royal Palms), and a bunch of chickens.
It is possible to get around in the near area, and on and off the property, on The Bus. The Bus stop is down a hill about 5 minutes away.
We are always involved in community and local food, so let us know your interests. & let us know if you want to plant plants, weed bad grass, attend a cacao ceremony, or donate to a good cause.

Volcano Island Farm is located on the Hamakua Coast of the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. We are 10 minutes from Honokaʻa Town and 20 minutes from Waipiʻo Valley Lookout.
We are a small agricultural farm with gardens, hydroponic greenhouses (coming soon), chickens for eggs, and acres of macadamia nut orchards. Most of the property is open green space with plenty of shade from trees—as long as you don’t mind the occasional falling nut.
We offer two types of camping. Traditional camping is available for guests with their own tent, which can be set up anywhere near the bathhouse in the grass or under a tree.
We also have tents and camping equipment available for use as needed. In addition, we offer the opportunity to stay in our restored Volkswagen van.
The van sleeps a couple very comfortably with a full- to queen-size bed, a swivel chair, and interior lighting. It is cozy and comfortable and includes a picnic table and outdoor lighting in the surrounding area.
The bathhouse is shared among all campers. We typically have no more than four campers at a time, so it is generally easy to share the space. The bathhouse includes a hot shower, sink with mirror, private toilet room, off-grid hot tub (heats in about 20 minutes), and an outdoor deck area for eating or relaxing.
Volcano Island Farm is a calm and quiet retreat from everyday life. We look forward to hosting you and hope you enjoy your relaxing stay. Weekend Trip to Ilona Farms
I didn't think I would be reminded of sleeping in the rainforest on the Big island. I was lucky enough to be at the cabin during a rainy time and it was magical! The sunset from the side of the mountain is perfect. If you like the sound of nature and birds at night it was perfect. Place was clean and the hosts were incredibly kind and had stellar communication.

Staying in their farm was such a wonderful experience. Everything was clean and comforting as soon as we got in their property. The place was beautiful with lots of things to see. The hosts were very friendly and nice. The stay added a spectacular experience in our stay.

Holy crap, this was the best accommodation! If you love nature, geckos, birds and chickens, this is the place for you! I just wish I knew that it was a work farm, I would have settled for 3 weeks of working for and with Nathan and Jenny. The surroundings are absolutely gorgeous, with mountains at your fingertips, forest around the corner, and nearby towns for a delicious cup of tea (or pokebowl).
I was there during storm Lala, and the cabin held up great! Just a tiny bit of rain that was able to come inside (surprised that it wasn't more).
Tommy, Tom and Thomas are always near to catch the bugs (they are the cutest Geckos you'll ever see), and you can expect some company in the best outdoor shower ever (I would come back for just the shower alone). All in all, if you are in for an adventure with the most lovely people on O'Ahu, stay at Living Circle farms (and I didn't even mention the crap load of fruit available)

1 night at Mu Garden Sanctuary
Amma and Jason were wonderful hosts! Their property has really been curated with love and intention. It was a comfortable stay and they made me feel very welcome. Their children are trained chefs and cooked delicious food on site, which all guests enjoyed together at the table. Amma and Jason even drove me to see the volcano erupting and shared with me how to make a traditional Hawaiian offering to the Goddess Pele. I will absolutely be staying with them again when I return to the Big Island. If you like nature and a lodging experience that is warmer than a regular hostel I would definitely reccomend Mu Garden.

We had an amazing 3 night stay in the private tent with its own bathroom.
Hot water, wifi and a cook top made the stay extremely comfortable. There are a few cooking utensils but not much.
The hosts were very communicative when we reached out however we didn’t need to contact them . Very private, quiet and peaceful! We want to stay for longer next trip!!

It’s Magical and Healing to sleep in the rainforest and the hosts are truly wonderful people, offering aloha the island way. Always giving the space I needed yet conscious of what may make me comfortable.
A rainforest has dirt to grow its magnificence of lilicoi, banana and much more that may be offered in season. Yumm..
Dirt turns to mud, though definitely doable if you love the outdoors. I LOVED my time there.
Mosquitoes live there too, usually, only out late afternoon & early morning. A nice cedar repellent works amazing and it’s non-toxic.
I stayed for almost 3 weeks, swimming at Waimea early morning back to the camp to write in the afternoon then an evening swim at 3 Tables and my own little Kirtan in the evening.
The polyjohn toilet was the cleanest I’ve ever seen, never stinky. Hot outdoor shower too.
Loved my time there, with rainbows every day.🌈💞🌺
