Campgrounds, people, noises, regulations, things you won't find here. You will find happiness, peace, the sound of the winds in 3000 year old trees, alpine streams tricking through ancient untouched forests, great horned owls and moose calling into the night, coyote echoing at sunset signaling night approaching, the warm smell of pine and summer grasses, touching the warm rocks next to the stream while you listen to the birds and crickets. I could go on and on, these are the things I see when I close my eyes and think of this place. This site sits at the base of (2) 14ers. in thee middle of a sunken meadow. This is the most beautiful and secluded camping experience you will experience in Colorado. There are miles of 4x4 and atv trails. There are countless hiking trails for day and short nature hikes. Above the site sits bristlecone pines that have appeared in ansel adams prints and are absolutely amazing. The sites sit on 160 private acres which borders national forest. There is a small a-frame tent that's insulated with big windows, locking door, skylight, solar for charging electronics, and a full size bed. The cabin is roughly the size of the full size mattress but seems bigger because of the a-frame roof. Its warm and cozy and keeps the critters and animals out, so you feel safe and comfortable. There are lots of amenities on site. There is a picnic table, 10'x12' waterproof awning and wood deck. There is a bbq, bear box, huge stone fire pit and bucket toilet. The road into the site was graded last year but still has small potholes typical of a Colorado county road, most low-profile cars will do fine. If you have a rv or camper, the turn around is limited, no tow behind campers or vehicles over 20'

The Zella Hut is a cabin built in the late 1800's. It was redone in the 70's and recently updated with mid century modern interiors. Now it serves as a backcountry hut in the winter and glamping cabin in the summer. During the winter it can be accessed by skinning, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. The space The house is located on an acre of land in Black Hawk, CO which is about an hour outside of Denver just past the Golden Gate Canyon State Park. The surrounding area has amazing Mountain Views and you can drive to the town of Black Hawk for dinner/Casinos in about 20 minutes (depending on the weather), to Rollinsville in about 20 minutes in the other direction, or to El Dora in about 30 minutes. Given that it takes about 20 minutes to get to any neighboring small town, note that the house location is remote. It is located in a residential neighborhood where most houses are on an acre of land. Because of that, sound travels very easily so while it is usually quiet, you can easily hear dogs barking or music. Guests love that this space is PRIVATE on an entire acre of land without any street noise. Enjoy this beautiful home without worrying about where or when you have to be somewhere. Black Hawk - have your own private space and hot tub & escape some of the madness of staying at the casinos by opting to stay at Little Gem Lodge! Small Towns (Rollinsville, Nederland, Black Hawk, Wondervu, Idaho Springs) - there are lots of cute local restaurants and breweries in each of these towns. Hiking + Cross Country Ski/Rec Areas - You have close access to Golden Gate Canyon State Park, St Mary's Glacier, Rocky Mountain National Park (~1-1.5 hours), 14ers. It's an awesome outdoor enthusiast location in any season because of its proximity to the mountains and state parks. You will have access to the entire house. It’s two stories with two bedrooms and a bathroom on the main level and one bedroom/one bathroom on the second level. Other things to note Dirt roads lead to the property that require at a minimum an AWD or 4x4 vehicle. Pet fee must be added under "Extras".

The a frame was the perfect place to reset after a long day driving across country! The view of the stars and twinkling lights below was perfection! Nice to unplugged and watch the moon roll across the sky. I’ll definitely stop again when I’m in the area! Very cute and cozy!

Weekend Trip to Sunrise Campsites

We had an amazing time staying at the cabin. The cabin was well stocked with propane and water, and the power station looked very nice too! The cabin itself is very cute, comfortable, has a fantastic view, and definitely feels private and secluded from the rest of the grounds. Stephanie was extremely responsive and eager to help, and was able to secure a sturdy ladder for us to get to the bed mere minutes after the request. The cabin definitely still has some construction items remaining, but is more than finished enough to have a comfortable and enjoyable stay. Overall my girlfriend and I had a wonderful time and will most definitely be coming back next year!!

Weekend Trip to Crystal Ranch

The Stargazer A frame cabin we stayed in was incredible. The sites are relatively close together but are extremely well placed so you still get privacy and good views. We made a fire in the firepit and lounged in the hammock before going to bed. The weather got gloomy but it was so cozy inside that it wasn't a problem, even without heat/electricity. After the storm had passed we went outside in the dark and the sky was absolutely gorgeous and starry. Very peaceful and much needed.

I had a nice stay with my dog at the end of September. The view is as nice as everyone says. The site is big with an outdoor fire pit, but i didn't use. You are at 11k feet and will feel it hiking and chopping wood for kindling. That was fun with a heavy axe. The portable toilet is interesting. still not sure how I feel about it. Temps were down to 35 night but was fine inside with the wood stove. The road up is pretty rough, but I made it fine in a Tesla 3. Just go slow.

Loved the set up of this well built cabin. Wood stove was a nice feature and kept it nice and toasty inside even with freezing temps. Seclusive and convenient to hiking Mount Bross and even Mounts Lincoln, Cameron and Democrat. Saw a moose and several deer in the open area in front of the cabin which was a highlight.

The best part is that it is off the beaten path. Beautiful, private spot to hang out with the family and the dogs. Great fishing and hiking nearby. We would definitely book this spot again. Road to the property is a bit bumpy but easy for our Pathfinder and Outback.

Absolutely stunning location. The cabin is great and fitting of the host’s description. Bed was quite comfortable. Grill is solid and will enable you to cook most anything—works perfectly as an oven. The cabin is small but well designed. There are some tight corners with low ceiling clearance (like the sink area) making it a bit tough for tall people. Couple more things to note that may be helpful. there are functional USB ports but the typical outlets did not work for us. Don’t expect to plug anything in. Solar panels provide the electricity— it’s probably by design that the outlets are deactivated reserving power for other things. Solar panels also provide the heat for the “hot springs.” The system was working—warm water was entering the pool, but not at a sufficient rate to heat the cold (and beautifully clear) spring water. There is evidence that they are still working on it. I’m hopeful that one day they’ll be able to deliver on the “hot” part. We still took exhilarating dips a couple of times. Take the altitude seriously, If you’re coming from sea level, you may feel sick for your entire stay. We live at 5600 feet and still spent a full day adjusting. It’s a special place—We had a wonderful time. William was very helpful.

Our family of 4 and 2 pups had an excellent experience at Zella Hut! So beautiful with so many different terrains and PRIVACY!! The shelter is everything you could ask for and more. Two king beds with decent mattresses and room for dog beds, couch, table and stove. Tons of blankets, firewood and the little kitchen has everything! Favorite part was the “hot spring” dipping pool next to the creek with a little waterfall! Close second was the view from the expansive cement decking! We had some fun adventures further up the road and next time we will definitely do one of the three 14ers we were so close to. But honestly, that deck was just stunning…our happy place for sure! Thanks for hosting us William- we appreciate your quick and clear communication 🤙🏽

This is honestly the best glamping experience ever! We stayed in Basecamp, although the sun can be a bit tough in the morning opening up the A frame helps a lot! There's a porta potty, a sink to wash your hands, and the property is very beautiful. We will definitely be coming back!

Where to go

Near Georgetown

Drive the Guanella Pass Scenic Byway to Grant, with easy access to numerous trails, including to the top of Mt. Bierstadt. Camp overnight in a forest service campground or dispersed sites along the byway. Drive up to the summit of Mt. Evan, and camp with your tent or RV at the base at Echo Lake Campground. Or head north to St. Mary’s Glacier for snowfields, trails, boulders, and wildflowers and Winter Park for winter and summer sports, with several campgrounds along the way.

White River National Forest

Head west to Dillon Reservoir, where you can camp near the water. Nearby are several world-class ski resorts, and winter camping options that include heated cabins and yurts. Further west, the White River National Forest spans more than 2 million acres. It’s the most visited national forest in the country with plenty of outdoor recreation opportunities and stunning scenery of mountains, lakes, and meadows. The forest is home to campgrounds and cabins, plus plenty of space in the backcountry.

Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests

Head east to Golden Gate Canyon State Park to camp or glamp off-grid. North of Georgetown, the Arapaho and Roosevelt national forests offer more than a million acres for outdoor recreation and camping. Hop on the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway from Central City through Nederland to Estes Park. There are numerous campgrounds along the byway and RV parks just outside Estes Park. Or continue on to Rocky Mountain National Park for vast alpine landscapes and everything from RV to backcountry sites.

Pike National Forest

South of Georgetown, this vast national forest sits along the southern Front Range, and offers several major 14er peaks to tackle and plenty of camping options from developed to dispersed. Go off the beaten path and hike, climb, and fish at the Lost Creek Wilderness, with plenty of places to pitch your tent. For amenities and hookups, enjoy lakeside camping at Eleven Mile State Park or stay at Mueller State Park in a cabin or tent, RV, equestrian, or backcountry site.

When to go

Summer is a popular time for visiting Georgetown. The Lost Creek River is open for rafting between May and August. The Guanella Pass Scenic Byway can see heavy traffic on weekends during peak leaf peeping season in the fall, and may have portions closed during the winter. The popular Bighorn Sheep Festival is held in November. Christmas is a festive time in Georgetown. Visit in winter for ice fishing on Lake Georgetown.

Know before you go

Georgetown sits at over 8,500 feet. Other recreation areas and campsites in the region are even higher, and altitude can be an issue.
Campsites in national forests are often first-come, first-served, while campsites in Colorado state parks require advanced reservations.
Georgetown Lake offers good fishing year-round, and is even a popular ice fishing destination. Fishing licenses are required for anyone over age 16.
