The Zella Hut is a cabin built in the late 1800's. It was redone in the 70's and recently updated with mid century modern interiors. Now it serves as a backcountry hut in the winter and glamping cabin in the summer. During the winter it can be accessed by skinning, snowshoeing and snowmobiling. During the summer it can be accessed by car. Its a small cabin, but it can sleep 4 in comfort. No Rv campers, van and sprinter rvs ok.Hidden high in the Colorado Rockies at 11000 feet Zella Hut is a rare private alpine cabin built in the late 1800s and redesigned as a warm mountain modern retreat. It sits in ancient bristlecone pine forest near the Decalibron Loop with access to four 14ers private hiking ATV routes wildlife viewing photography snowshoeing skinning skiing and backcountry adventure. The setting is quiet secluded and far from normal campground noise. Moose often wander through the meadow and owls foxes elk and hummingbirds move through the trees. At night the sky fills with stars and the silence is unforgettable. Inside the cabin is clean cozy and thoughtfully designed. The open layout feels bigger than expected with high ceilings large windows movable furniture and two king Murphy beds that fold away during the day. The interior includes Italian tile granite counters solid maple cabinets beetle kill pine walls custom oak beds and a modern wood fireplace with a large glass view for cold mountain nights. The kitchen includes cookware cooking essentials a sink and fresh drinking water. Summer guests may have seasonal use of the indoor bathroom setup and outdoor hot water shower. Outside is a large deck with built in seating grill burner and peaceful space to sit among the trees. In summer the creekside thermal dipping tub beside a small waterfall and pond creates a private alpine hot spring style experience. Please ask about seasonal availability before booking. In winter Zella Hut becomes a true ski in backcountry hut. Guests access the cabin by snowshoe ski skinning or snowmobile about 3 miles from parking. Backcountry terrain and multiple ski lines are nearby. Two other private Hipcamp sites are located on the property for guests who want to explore different areas. Altitude note this cabin sits around 11000 feet. Expect high elevation conditions cool nights strong sun and fast changing mountain weather. No RVs or trailers. Vans and Sprinter style campers are welcome.

Firewood provided, firepit, wood burning fireplace, private. Fire-Restrictions-Burn-Ban-Info by calling 19-836-4160 (Northwest fire district 4) updated daily. Check with all local and state fire bans. Guests and responsible to abide by all regulations.
Toilet available
Portable toilet. During the cold months there is a bucket toilet. There are bags provided with absorbents. During the summer there is a portable dometic toilet inside the cabin.

Bottled water or jugs. Fresh water is provided in the summer. Winter, guests must hike in their own water

Very mixed bag experience with this cabin. First, the host required that I send photos of my debit card prior to receiving the directions to the cabin for incidentals. While I understand the need for a card on file, email is not a secure form of communication and I am uncomfortable sending sensitive information using that avenue. The host was unable to provide an alternative so my choice was to figure out an alternative method on my own or lose my money and lose out on the trip. Luckily I was able to send it via secure document. I highly suggest reading the rental agreement very closely and being prepared to do significant deep cleaning at the end of your trip if you want to avoid getting charged. Evidently this cabin is not cleaned or inspected between guests (it's also unclear how often the bedding is washed), so guests are expected to do things like clean the toilet, mop the floors, and empty the sink tank. If you're fine with all of that and do well at high altitudes, this could be a great place for you to stay. It was absolutely beautiful scenery, a thoughtfully built structure, and I'm sure when the hot spring is working it is absolutely lovely. Unfortunately I ended up having a medical emergency and we had to leave early, resulting in $240 worth of fees when the price was already pretty steep considering the amount of cleaning expected. All in all, just make sure you know exactly what you're in for when booking this cabin!

Such a great retreat! Myself, my husband and our two children loved the cabin, it was perfect for us! It was nice to be “off grid” but still have some basic amenities like a portable toilet and well stocked kitchen. The view is amazing and you can see every star at night either inside laying on the bed or on the porch. William was a great host and was quick with responding to messages. My husband and son walked a couple trails around and loved it. My husband is already talking about him and my son coming back someday to do more hiking. Beautiful cabin and property!

This was the exact retreat we were looking for. We had an incredible time exploring, staying warm by the indoor stove, cooking meals and enjoying coffee on the deck. Wandering the land was so serene, you couldn't have asked for a better way to spend a few days. It was the comfort you need while off-grid.

I was sick but from what my friends told me they had an INCREDIBLE time! It was a perfect intro into the upcoming camping season and provided extra shelter that was very much needed in the late spring. Would highly recommend this little spot for a cute getaway :)

Fall weekend trip

I had a nice stay with my dog at the end of September. The view is as nice as everyone says. The site is big with an outdoor fire pit, but i didn't use. You are at 11k feet and will feel it hiking and chopping wood for kindling. That was fun with a heavy axe. The portable toilet is interesting. still not sure how I feel about it. Temps were down to 35 night but was fine inside with the wood stove. The road up is pretty rough, but I made it fine in a Tesla 3. Just go slow.

Seclusive cabin experience

Loved the set up of this well built cabin. Wood stove was a nice feature and kept it nice and toasty inside even with freezing temps. Seclusive and convenient to hiking Mount Bross and even Mounts Lincoln, Cameron and Democrat. Saw a moose and several deer in the open area in front of the cabin which was a highlight.

Overall , our experience was good at William’s Zella hut. Kitchen is well stocked, and cooking on the outdoor grill was easy . A couple concerns: I specifically asked if the water hot springs would be working and hot when we arrived. We were told yes. This was not true- the hot springs were freezing cold, and we enjoyed a cold plunge instead. We were also told we get 3 bars of service for ATand T- we only got one at most. Make sure to bring matches and some newspaper if you want to make a fire- there was one small Bic lighter that worked most of the time. Finally, William does not seem to respond through the Hipcamp site promptly, and we ended up calling him or texting his phone if we had questions. This may not bother people, but I prefer to do communication through the site. The area is incredibly quiet, private, gorgeous, close to a 14 ers. We enjoyed our stay- just wished the communication was more precise about the hot springs and the service.

Incredible views! We loved getting to see the stars from the skylights. The cabin was nice and cozy with the fire going. It was well stocked with the essentials. The host had great communication and there were very detailed instructions for everything.

Loved staying at the a-frame. Clear directions to locate it and to stay and didn’t encounter anyone else during our two day stay. Saw lots of different animals and enjoyed star gazing from the bed.

Absolutely stunning location. The cabin is great and fitting of the host’s description. Bed was quite comfortable. Grill is solid and will enable you to cook most anything—works perfectly as an oven. The cabin is small but well designed. There are some tight corners with low ceiling clearance (like the sink area) making it a bit tough for tall people. Couple more things to note that may be helpful. there are functional USB ports but the typical outlets did not work for us. Don’t expect to plug anything in. Solar panels provide the electricity— it’s probably by design that the outlets are deactivated reserving power for other things. Solar panels also provide the heat for the “hot springs.” The system was working—warm water was entering the pool, but not at a sufficient rate to heat the cold (and beautifully clear) spring water. There is evidence that they are still working on it. I’m hopeful that one day they’ll be able to deliver on the “hot” part. We still took exhilarating dips a couple of times. Take the altitude seriously, If you’re coming from sea level, you may feel sick for your entire stay. We live at 5600 feet and still spent a full day adjusting. It’s a special place—We had a wonderful time. William was very helpful.

Our family of 4 and 2 pups had an excellent experience at Zella Hut! So beautiful with so many different terrains and PRIVACY!! The shelter is everything you could ask for and more. Two king beds with decent mattresses and room for dog beds, couch, table and stove. Tons of blankets, firewood and the little kitchen has everything! Favorite part was the “hot spring” dipping pool next to the creek with a little waterfall! Close second was the view from the expansive cement decking! We had some fun adventures further up the road and next time we will definitely do one of the three 14ers we were so close to. But honestly, that deck was just stunning…our happy place for sure! Thanks for hosting us William- we appreciate your quick and clear communication 🤙🏽

We really enjoyed the cabin. Location was very private. We enjoyed hiking in the area, including to the bristlecones at windy ridge, which you could hike to from the cabin. William was great at communicating and answering questions. The shower is outside. The portable toilet was inside - we did bring a sheet so there was more privacy given the glass door to the toilet area. We opted to clean ourselves rather than pay the cleaning fee. We really enjoyed our weekend here.

My fiance and I spent Valentine's weekend at the cabin during winter. We enjoyed our trip! Such a well-built cabin with very thought out amenities. We would love to come back again. The Host is great at communicating and will answer any of your questions. The 3 mile snowshoe trek in was fun! Wish we brought skiis to ski nearby. FYI You will be stepping outside to pee. The host did require us to sign a rental agreement/ liability waiver and send a copy of a credit card.

We really loved it. The place is so serene and quiet and far out from civilization. The surrounding area is extremely beautiful too, with so many walks. We even saw bears and elks on the hill opposite us. On the whole it was one of the best experiences of our life. The cabin itself is just one single space but extremely well designed and built. Everything has been carefully planned for

We had a wonderful time celebrating our anniversary at this cabin! It’s the perfect spot for a quick getaway. There is a generous amount of amenities provided which made us feel very comfortable. While we could’ve used the fire pit outside, we ended up not using it because the indoor wood burning stove was sufficient and convenient. It was cozy and kept us warm (would recommend cracking the front door open of the cabin while starting up the fire so it doesn’t get too smoky inside). We made good use of the grill and enjoyed all of our meals on the deck while enjoying the beautiful views. Would also recommend hiking to Windy Ridge if you’re not up for a 14er and just looking for a moderate hike. We would love to stay here again!

Perfectly roomy and cosy for three people! Our flight was severely delayed and so we ended up arriving late at night, which made it tricky to find the cabin. However once we were there everything was wonderful. Comfortable bedding, gorgeous views, an indoor fireplace (it got chilly!) and a spacious outdoor deck that we took advantage of for stargazing. Kevin was really communicative and provided great directions. Highly recommend this cabin!

The property itself was beautiful, nestled in a serene setting that truly allows you to connect with nature. However, I found the description of the cabin a bit misleading. The listing didn’t specify that it was a single-room space, and the photos made it seem like there was more room—possibly a loft or at least a more spacious layout. One of the biggest surprises was the refrigerator situation. The description mentioned that a fridge/freezer would be available during the summer months, with only an outdoor cooler in winter. Unfortunately, we had a cooler during our stay, even though it wasn’t winter. Another issue was the bathroom situation. The flushing toilet was out of service, and we were given a portable toilet instead. However, this toilet was awkwardly placed in a glass shower stall without any privacy curtain, meaning everyone in the cabin had a clear view. The outdoor solar shower also lacked a privacy curtain, which was disappointing. The indoor stove for heat was also problematic. Despite following the instructions and setting the lever to the left, the stove filled the room with smoke, making it uncomfortable to use. Overall, while the cabin’s location and setting are lovely, I think the owner should be more upfront and specific about the amenities. This cabin might be great for couples, but I wouldn’t recommend it for friends or anyone seeking a bit more privacy when it comes to bathroom and shower facilities.
