Ash Creek is a unicorn for remote camping on the edge of the Tonto National Forest. Andrew and his son offered us a tour of the canyon and we got to see all the views and learn about the history of the mining operations. The campsite we chose was flat and clean and the clearing was surrounded but trees and steep cliffs. With no light pollution, the night sky looked amazing and the sound of the creek created a nice ambience. We brought our own firewood but there were plenty of loose branches if you prefer to forage. I wish we had booked for more time here, because there is a lot to see and do, including hikes and mine exploration. I had no issues driving around in my Subaru Outback but would recommend reaching out about road conditions beforehand since some of the paths can be narrow or washed out. I don’t get to camp often but hope to be a repeat customer at Ash Canyon.

We had the BEST time camping at Ash Creek Canyon. It’s truly hard for me to find words or sum up our trip in a short paragraph. To put it simply, it feels like we only saw the tip of the iceberg as far as exploration goes in Chrysotile. We cannot wait to go back and learn and explore some more. Our stay was magical. Andy was a top-notch host, super accommodating with speedy correspondence, and truly just a pleasure to be around. His enthusiasm, love and awe for this land shined bright. He showed us around all of the land reachable via side-by-side and gave us a grand tour on the history of the abandoned mining town. There is so much to uncover there. Not only was the history fascinating, but the scenery was BEAUTIFUL… truly enchanting. We camped at site #2, Waterfall Pasture. We were perfectly secluded from other campers and felt like we had the whole area to ourselves.. which was great as we were camping with our two young daughters and three dogs (a rather loud bunch). We couldn’t have asked for a better weekend getaway, and cannot wait to come back. THANK YOU ANDY!

Loved this secluded canyon! Met Andrew by the highway, which was already way out there, then followed him on his quad in my 21' class-B van for 3 or 4 miles to campsite #2. Dislodged my low hanging generator on the rough road, but I knew it was a risk. Well worth it. This property had absolutely no noise or light pollution. It was an old mining town with several old mines still open to explore. I had an unforgettable few days secluded on this property. Zero cellular coverage with Verizon and Wi-Fi wasn't on while I was there. I thoroughly enjoyed my unplugged time. I will definitely be returning.

We loved the area and the campsite! Falling asleep to the sound of the creek next to us and waking up to the sun rising over the mountains made us wish we had booked a longer trip. Peaceful, private, and stunning. We came in after dark and Andrew met us at the gate, showed us to the site, and was available for anything we needed. 10/10 no notes. Will book again.

Car camped here for 2 nights to visit the Petrified National Forest. Amazing stay! Very quiet(I heard the train a few times but was really just background noise) and the stars at night were beautiful! Would definitely stay here again!

We absolutely loved our stay here! We were looking for somewhere beautiful and private to celebrate our anniversary and this exceeded our expectations. The tour at the start was so informative and we were able to find and explore all the places Andrew talked about. We spent quite a bit of time in Victory mine, found the underground waterfall, and hiked back to the swimming hole. He described the swimming hole as 'fairytale', and it truly was. We camped on the most beautiful site with amazing views of the canyon and towering bluffs. It was full moon and the site of that moon rising over the bluffs was breathtaking. This is truly one of the most beautiful, untouched places we have ever been and we hope to be back again someday.

When we arrived and got settled, we were quickly comfortable and happy with our surroundings!!! It’s such an enchanting, peaceful, kind environment. I believe that anyone that comes to stay will enjoy the beauty and nature as we did!
The animals were an amazing bonus!
Sara and Jim are very kind and helpful people, and we can’t say enough about their hospitality!
We will definitely return and enjoy another stay!

This was a last-minute booking, and we’re so glad we chose Andrew’s place. He is a fantastic host who takes great pride in his land, his guests, and the history of what was once a thriving old mining town. Chrysotile is a stunning area with rich history, and our experience exceeded all expectations. We stayed at Site #1, which felt perfectly secluded for us. During our stay, we encountered an incredible variety of wildlife, including birds, deer, a skunk, and even a golden eagle.
A highlight of the trip was a tour of one of the mines led by Chad, Andrew's caretaker—it was truly special. Our campsite was next to a running creek, where we spent most of our time relaxing, and we ended our days by driving to a plateau to witness breathtaking sunsets. Unfortunately, we didn’t make it to any of the waterfalls on the property, but there’s always next time.
Andrew is putting so much effort into maintaining and sharing the beauty of this special place, and it shows. Just remember to pack light and take responsibility for packing out your waste to help preserve the canyon. If you’re looking for peace, solitude, and the chance to disconnect from the hustle and bustle, this is the perfect spot. Huge thanks to Andrew and Chad for being such wonderful hosts!

Getting here was a little weird because the directions assumed you were coming from a certain direction. Easy to get turned around. There are 3 sites with electric. Sites 1 and 2 are alongside the brewery. Site 3 sits behind the brewery sort of amongst the debris of a business. Not scenic at all. The boondock sites looked better, but AZ in summer you have to have AC. The brewery and brew was great!

Sites are level. Easy access. Plenty of room. Brewery affordable and fun due to live music. Brewery closes at 9:00pm so no late night noise. Staff is very friendly. Owner responsive to texts. Super clean and quiet. It’s a great star watching place due to dark skies. 12 min from downtown Show Low. 30 min from Lakeside. Not in the Pine Tree area but rather in Junipers. We Highly recommend.

Ash Creek Canyon is a true hidden gem! As you dive into the rugged terrain of the canyon, a whole other world opens up. You can enjoy the tranquility of your own campsite or explore the old mine town that is spread out through the canyon.
A big shout-out goes to Chad. He’s such a genuine and thoughtful guy, who took us on a little tour, while explaining the history of the different buildings and showing us the true beauty of the canyon.
We’ll definitely be back!

Love, love this experience! First time camping with my two donkeys! Sara is awesome and so very helpful! My granddaughters were able to just wander the property safely, sometimes riding and others hiking. The setup is perfect and easy with the corral right in camp. We had electric and wonderful water right there! The ranch is fantastic and other guests friendly and helpful. We will definitely return!

Ash Creek Canyon is so much more than a place to camp—it's land waiting to be explored. Our stay at Campsite 2 was incredible! The site itself was spacious, private, and tucked right into the beauty of the canyon. Waking up surrounded by towering cliffs and the sounds of nature was truly magical.
But what really set this experience apart was the hidden history woven into the land. From old mines and hand-dug caves to swimming holes and trails, every corner holds a story—and Andrew, our host, brought it all to life! He was absolutely fantastic. His tour of the property wasn’t just informative—it was adventurous and fun, even for our big family of 7. The kids were in awe the entire time, and so were we.
We climbed, hiked, swam, and explored for hours. It was the kind of trip where memories are made and retold for years.
💯 Highly recommend Ash Creek Canyon to anyone looking for a mix of camping, history, and wild fun. There's something here for everyone—and yes, we’re already planning our next visit!
