A back-to-nature campsite close to the beaches of Anglesey’s north shore

This dog-friendly site welcomes campers with tents and campervans to the north side of Anglesey island. It’s a quiet spot, surrounded by wildlife, just a mile’s walk from the nearest beach. Here, the birdsong sounds louder, the stars seem to shine brighter, and the camping is blissfully wilder. Make your way to Caerau Campsite and you’ll be able to pitch where you please, have a campfire and let your kids run free in a field.

The campsite occupies one of the fields of a former dairy farm, the toilets are housed in a well-renovated former pig sty and the on-site cafe is in the farmhouse courtyard. It’s a lovely rural setting and aside from the farm’s own buildings there’s no civilisation in sight. This, and the fact that the campsite is off grid, keeps light pollution to a minimum and dials the star gazing up to max.

Owner Marc says he and his family moved here for a different pace of life and that’s what’s on offer to campers too. This is the quieter side of Anglesey. It’s fields, farms and country lanes with grass growing down the middle all the way to the beach at Hen Borth. That’s the closest place to get to the coast—with a shoreline of cobblestones. For sand, head five miles to Cemaes Bay where a long stretch makes for a family-friendly place to swim. Or, if it’s wildlife you’re into, set a course for the nearby nature reserve at Cemlyn Bay.

Caerau Campsite feels far from anywhere and for more than what nature (and the campsite cafe) provides, you will have to jump in the car. But it’s only 15 minutes to the nearest town where you’ll find shops and a place to eat out. Within an hour you can be anywhere on the island or even in Snowdonia National Park, safe in the knowledge that you’ll soon return to your pitch on the wilder side of Anglesey.

Just 1 mile away from the cobblestone coastline, you are deep in rural Anglesey with public footpaths taking you over some breath-taking scenic routes. If you fancy the idea of sleeping under the stars, this is the place for it. Being located within the dark belt it will be possible to see shooting stars, passing satellites and even the milky way.

Another great stay. Fabulous opportunity to watch the sun set and the delight of a starry night on this remote and well run site. Spotting a woodpecker in the morning was an added bonus.

Perfect site for exploring area
Our first time to Anglesey was made all the more memorable by this lovely camp site. It’s clearly growing into itself and was welcoming to all ages and folk looking to enjoy the area. We had three relaxing days and were sad to leave but the little touches made a big difference (the on-site refreshments available are a huge plus). We would recommend this site and will look to return ourselves!

A very lovely place run by very lovely people! Facilities were always kept clean and tidy. There was a lot of space to choose a spot for our tent. Breakfast was very nice and the owners were very welcoming and accommodating. Would definitely recommend.

Located in rural Anglesey in an AONB (Area of Natural Beauty), Caerau Campsite is just 1 mile (10 min walk) from cobblestone beach and a short 10 min drive from Cemaes Bay beach. Abundant in wildlife, we have 25 acres of unfarmed land that also comprises of a small lake. We are also fortunate enough to be within the "Dark Belt" meaning that on a clear night, stargazers can enjoy the beauty of the skies.
Nearby attractions

The closest beach to Caerau Campsite is, Hen Borth, just a mile away along quiet lanes with a shoreline of cobblestones and the chance of seeing seals. Just along the coast, about a 10-minute drive from site, is Cemlyn Bay. You can swim off the shingle shore or marvel at the tern colony who live on the saltwater lagoon behind the beach, part of a nature reserve managed by the North Wales Wildlife Trust. There’s a mixture of sand and shingle at two other beaches within a short drive of the campsite: Church Bay (three miles) and Cemaes Bay (five miles), which is also the northernmost town in Wales. But as this is the island of Anglesey, there are plenty more to choose from too and none are too far. You can pretty much reach anywhere on the island – and even into Snowdonia National Park on the mainland within an hour. The coast is great for walking too with the Anglesey Coastal Path providing a route the whole way around the island.

Food and drink

There’s a small cafe on site which serves good coffee, breakfast baps and paninis at lunchtime. For more than that, head out to Cemaes Bay (a drive of 15 minutes) for lunch at The Harbour or The Stag. If you’re camping in summer and spending the day at Church Bay, try seasonal restaurant Wavecrest which has great sea views from the garden and well-reviewed cream teas! For campsite supplies, the closest shop is a Spar in Tregele with more shops in Cemaes Bay, a couple of miles further on.
