Camping and glamping near the Kent coast, with campfires and a good on-site bar

An hour-and-a-half out of London, there's a sweet spot in the Kent countryside. It's midway between the ancient towns of Sandwich and Deal and a short drive from the beaches at Margate, the cliffs at Dover and the city of Canterbury too. It sits in countryside so close to the coast that seagulls fly over; a short walk from a farm shop, a pub and a nature reserve. It’s here, in this sweet spot, that you’ll find Lillyroos; a camping and glamping site with campfires allowed – and a bar.

It's very much a family-friendly place and while kids will be thrilled to discover the goats and the chickens on site, mums and dads will be grateful for the G&T they can order to celebrate setting up tent. Come here and in addition to letting someone else pour the drinks, you can forget about cooking, if you want. There’s a kitchen, a chef and a menu of locally-sourced food. On night one of your stay, it's a godsend. For the rest of the time: pure pleasure. Breakfasts, dinners, real coffee, Kentish wines and locally-brewed beer are all on offer at this rustic, festoon-lit bar that's set up in a re-purposed farm building. Next door, the barn offers an equally pleasant place to hang out undercover with leather sofas warmed by a log-burning stove and a big screen for movie nights. It's the inside brought out to the field, but it'll be the field that you came for, so what of that?

Lillyroos is set up in three grassy acres that are surrounded and sheltered by neat rows of mature trees and neighboured by fields full of crops. There are ten simple grass pitches for campers and ten well-spaced bell tents for glampers. Two are unfurnished, fuss-free, good-value and dog-friendly. The others have made-up beds, fairy lights and log-burners. Campfires are allowed in off-ground fire pits that are provided for bell tent guests and available to hire for the regular camping crew.

This sweet spot in the south east is within easy reach of some big Kent attractions; Dover Castle and Canterbury Cathedral among them. Our advice is to visit those on your way to or from your holiday and, instead, spend days in between savouring the lower key, local attractions that surround the campsite itself. Walk straight out into marshy countryside to spot birds, explore neighbouring Betteshanger Park, cycle to Sandwich to eat fish and chips on the quay or go crabbing off Deal's little pier. It doesn’t get much sweeter than that.

Our stay at Lilyroos.
The campsite was well kept and amenities overall were excellent. It was good to have a large space to go to for refreshments and cover. I liked the olde world decor. Dave the owner (as well as other staff) was very welcoming and helpful. Although places to visit are on the campsite’s webpage, a board with details of local attractions and walks to Sandwich and Deal as well as Bettshanger would be helpful to read.

Beautiful furnished bell tents. Everywhere Is immaculate and the hosts are really friendly and helpful. A great fun and family vibe in the bar/ lounge area. The music on the Friday and Saturday was really good and made for a great atmosphere. I’d definitely recommend this site .. great for all ages. 👍😊

Lovely campsite - good scenery, clean (and warm) showers and toilets, good facilities for washing up etc. The bar and comfy sofas are a great extra, particularly for bad weather. Super friendly owners too. You can walk into Deal or Sandwich pretty easily with great beaches. Thank you for a lovely stay!

Was met by Sarah as soon as we pulled in and was shown to pitch, very friendly warm welcome, facilities were great a lot better than I was expecting as we stayed on a more commercial site the night before. Had a pint of the local lager ( forget the name) and stayed for a pizza that was amazing. Great site and will defo be returning. Didn't experience the yurt tents but they look fun.

Nearby attractions

Betteshanger Park (01304 619227), a country park on the site of a former colliery, is just over a mile down the road. It has walking and cycling trails, play equipment and lots of events throughout the year. Just beyond it is Cottington Lakes Fishery (01304 380691) with a selection of lakes for anglers. The historic towns of Sandwich and Deal are within cycling distance of site (three and four miles away, respectively). The Sandwich Bay Bird Observatory field centre is just outside town and provides information on nature reserves and places to spot birds and wildlife. You can also walk directly there from site on local footpaths through marsh land. There are also wildlife boat tours, including seal-spotting, from Sandwich harbour with Sandwich River Bus (07958 376183). It's just a short drive (15 miles) to Canterbury with its magnificent cathedral, to the sandy beaches and seaside towns of Broadstairs, Ramsgate and Margate or to historic Dover Castle (0370 3331181). Kids will love the exotic animals at Howletts Wild animal Park (11 miles away) and Wingham Wildlife Park (eight miles) – where life-sized dinosaur models are almost as exciting for younger kids. Older ones, and adults, might be more interested in the canoeing, kayaking and paddleboarding on the River Stour. You can hire vessels for a paddle from Canoe Wild (07947 835688) 11 miles away.

Food and drink

There is a fully-licensed (and well-stocked) bar on site offering locally-sourced food and drinks, including proper coffee. At the end of the lane, you'll find well-stocked Algar Lodge Farm Shop, which can cater for all your picnic and campfire cooking supplies, and there's a pub right over the road too. But those in the know stick with drinks at the on-site bar or head out to one of three recommended pubs just a mile away; The Crown (01304 612555) or the St Crispin Inn (01304 612081), which you'll need to get in the car for, or The Blue Pigeons (01304 613233), which is a pleasant walk away. For fish and chips, head to Sandwich and enjoy them from the quayside or head to Deal to pick up some fresh fish to cook back on site.
