The land has arroyos, mesas, lots of flat areas to car camp, pitch a tent or sleep on the ground under the beautiful, dark New Mexico skies. There are also a few places to hang a hammock. To the west, there are miles and miles to hike, mountain bike, or just enjoy the view of the Magdalena Mountains. Neighbors are quiet and you can choose a spot away from anyone.

Brief Directions for Those Without Internet:
Exit the I-25 at San Marcial onto Highway 178/Willow Springs Ranch Road. At the end off the off-ramp you're going to turn right at the stop sign and drive West towards the Magdalena Mountains. You'll pretty quickly cross over a cattle-guard and then be on a dirt road for the remainder of the drive, but it's very well maintained by the county, so don't worry! Keep going West towards the mountains for about five miles until you cross over another cattle-guard.
Shortly after this second cattle-guard you'll come across a four-way intersection where Sunset Vista bisects Willow Springs Ranch Rd. A lot of the signage gets blown over out here, so this may or may not be adequately marked.
Turn left at the intersection. Drive about 2600ft and you'll cross over one last cattle-guard. Slightly beyond this is sort of the upper Northwestern corner of the property. The next 2600ft beyond those three stacks of rocks is the Western face of the property. If you pass a big-wash you went too far. There's two dirt driveways leading into the property, making it pretty navigable in virtually any vehicle as well as dozens of cleared out sites.

Close to Bosque del Apache, 13 miles down same road. Close to restaurants in San Antonio. Sites have full hookups. Owners do sell firewood. 2nd time staying here and would/will stay again. Good jumping off place. We did day soak in Tor C at Riverbend resort about an hour away and visited Elephant Butte.
Lots of wild areas and off roading around Socorro which is close by. Decent views of surrounding mountains and Cranes flying by all day long. Great if doing Festival of Cranes at the wildlife refuge.

Really great to see someone making charming tiny houses out of native materials with his own hands! Also, the area has a lot to offer, including great hiking in the nearby mountains (but reasonably high clearance vehicles necessary to get to the closest trail heads) and a comfortable and inexpensive train into both Albuquerque and Santa Fe. Lastly, the hosts are really good people--community minded, kind hearted, thinking for themselves.

Very nice little spot. It’s tucked in the back of a main road and very dark at night. We loved that part as the sky was so beautiful! This is a perfect stop over spot. The price is fair and having the Owl Restaurant down the street is a bonus. Definitely get the green chili cheese burger! The host was very responsive and nice. We will definitely be staying again sometime in the future.

We didn't get to stay long as we were in between long distance destinations but Melodie & Brent's place was awesome. And they were super patient with us with directions. Yes, as other's have said follow them to a T! We did find the distance on Twinning Rd (not marked that we could see but is literally two roads side by side) to be 2.8 rather than 2.6 miles and the Blue Moon container is so faded you can't see what it is until you are right up on it but other than that their directions worked perfectly. I'm neurospicy so specifics trip me up sometimes but they were patient with us and walked us through. The sunset was one of the best I've seen in a very long time and the sunrise was cotton candy gorgeous.

A lovely, mystical, adorable break in the long drive thru New Mexico, boasting creative DIY solutions worth taking notes from, with some rad-tabulous hosts who live on site and make great campfire chat buddies. Taking in the view from our campsite, was breathtaking. Melodie and Brent were beyond helpful and equally amazing hosts. Their land is gorgeous, natural and clean. Sunsets, sunrises and everything in between. Our van died on the way back to our campsite. Melodie and Brent saved us. We drove from Oklahoma to NM. She brought her friend along who is a mechanic and he fixed our van. Absolutely above and beyond. I look forward to staying with Melodie and Brent in the future. Plus, your compost toilet was a very unexpected luxury.

Overview
About
A massive 1.6 million acres, this National Forest is divided into four Ranger Districts: the Sandia, Mountainair, Mt. Taylor, and Magdalena. When you add in the National Grasslands, the recreational opportunities are endless.
Here you’ll find some of the best mountain biking in New Mexico. We’re particularly fond of Otero Canyon and the slickrock of Red Rocks Trail. There’s also the grueling climb to the top of Sandia Peak. It’s 10,000 feet of lung-busting good times.
For those interested in summit views without the all the aerobics, the Sandia Peak Tramway offers a more genteel way to the top. However you get up there, you’ll be treated to a panoramic view of the Rio Grande Valley. Sunset is the best time to catch those classic New Mexico colors. If the 10,378 foot peak isn’t high enough for you, hot air balloon rides can be booked from Albuquerque.
Of course, there’s tons of hiking too. One of our faves is the Strawberry Canyon hike, a 2.5-mile trek up to McGaffey Lookout Tower and another set of stunning panoramic views.
With most campgrounds not more than an hour’s drive from Albuquerque, you’ll have your pick of the area’s traditional sites, cabins, or lodges. But remember, it’s a desert. Bring good, sturdy boots and lots of water.

This campground is not well reviewed on other sites, but I'd like to make the case. Beautiful tree cover, a really sweet group cook/picnic building, and several small camp sites. Now this is great for us as we have a small bus. I would not recommend pulling your gigantic Torque Fifth Wheeler up there, you won't be able to turn around. On the road in there are some terrific boondocking sites along Lobo Canyon Creek that are more forgiving of larger campers. Great location, free camp, vault toilets and picnic area - it's free, what's not to like? Check out our links to free campgrounds on fearlessbus dot com.

Our visit was middle of May 2018 for 3 days. Good spot to hunker down a few days. Good review by Layne here but there is NOT potable water at campsite. Terrific atmosphere, remote and lightly used campground, concrete picnic tables at each site, good toilets. 35 miles to groceries and gas. Disbursed camping sites available very nearby to use the very good toilets at the campground. Privacy at campground is low. Hiking from there is excellent with most the best hiking uphill directly above the campground up a forest road one mile then onto well maintained trails. Almost all trails gaining elevation so all downhill walking out. It's 10 degrees cooler on average than Socorro about 35 miles away. We loved the remote feeling.

Great little campground. Lots of random roads to explore on foot or 4-wheel drive. 5 Level sites, pit toilets, no fees. Mature Ponderosa pines abound. Spent 2 night March-2018, only saw 2 other campers come and go.

The sites here are situated along a curving road, with the outer sites a bit higher up than the interior ones. Some have more foliage cover than others, but generally the level of privacy is not high. However, the mountain is beautiful, full of pines and aspens. There are clean and well-maintained pit toilets and potable water. Each site has a picnic table and a flat, sandy tent pad; there's not enough flat space otherwise to pitch a tent. Overall, a pleasant place, but better as an overnight stop than a place to pause for a few days.

very big ground ! we arrived very late at night and just set up our tent in the field. there were a lot of other people, it feels like a "no law zone" haha. the sign says you have to make a reservation but we didn't, and didn't have any issue. best night sky ever, very good for stars seeing.
we left on the morning without exploring the area but it looks like you would have a blast spending a few days there, lot of outdoor activities.
