Croeso (welcome) to the big gap on the map! Mid Wales is a mecca for campers drawn to its natural wonders, which one might expect to find in a Tolkien tale. Bounded by Snowdonia (Eyri) National Park to the north and the Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog) National Park to the south, the vast yellow-green uplands of Mid Wales in between are little-known. For those who choose to tread the trails across the middle, solitude awaits. The region’s coast, Cardigan Bay, is more visited, yet still full of lonesome, sandy coves. Hikers are spoiled—sample the Wales Coast Path along Cardigan Bay, the Cambrian Way through the wild middle, or the Offa’s Dyke Path along the eastern edge. The best camping is found along Cardigan Bay.

Campsites in Mid Wales are as diverse as the landscape, with a range of facilities and setups. While many established players offer set pitches to accommodate tents of different dimensions, most small-scale campsites (particularly those on farms) allow campers to pitch wherever they like. As for facilities, these can range from the bourgeois to the basic, with compost toilets and eco showers common. Many sites also offer some form of communal hub where campers can cook, play games, and socialise.

Weekend Trip to Sunbank Accommodation, Llangollen

A wonderful, cosy space with great views! The directions were easy enough and quite straightforward to access the Yurt. The facilities were clean and well organised. We especially appreciated the electric blanket provided but with the log burner on, it was comfortably warm inside! The reading books and board game was a nice touch, too. I would highly recommend. A few suggestions: Some light directly outside of the Yurt would be helpful as it got quite dark and was hard to locate the door handle at times.

Weekend Trip to School Farm Holidays

We stayed in Stag Lodge. Delighted with our accommodation. It was comfortable, stylish, and had every facility. A wonderful hot tub. Helen was a great host, e mailing a really useful handbook, about the Lodge, & area. I appreciated the fact that all the essential items like soap, dishwasher tablets, salt, pepper, teabags etc etc were supplied…! A great base to enjoy visiting an interesting area.

Weekend Trip to Bechan Retreats

Amazing lodges, our family had Kites Nest and Barn Owl Lodge and they were perfect for our group size, including a toddler and elderly woman! They were comfortable and gorgeous. Interiors and views were stunning, I couldn't believe the sunsets at night, the hot tubs were such a treat and both lodges had fantastic seating areas on the deck, we went on the steam railway and enjoyed a BBQ at the lodge. Would love to come back next year.

This is without doubt one of the best places we have stayed! We have been in so many types of accommodation from pods, huts, cabins, tepees, tents, caravans, the works but this had all the fine touches that made it a really amazing place to stay. Everything had been thought of and it is all beautifully done so you don’t have to worry just pack your bags and a towel and you’re good to go. The setting is stunning with the surrounding fields and hills. There is plenty of outdoor seating to enjoy the tranquility, even sun loungers for the nice weather. Inside the hut, there is plenty of space to sit, eat and enjoy the comforts of a warm bed (the heated blanket is a brilliant idea and definitely needed for the colder evenings). There is a tv and sockets provided but we loved the added touch of board games and books so we could completely switch off from the world. The kitchen is fully equipped with kettle, toaster, stove, microwave and all the utensils and the bathroom was everything you need. The owners are lovely and extremely welcoming, showing us around it all and ensuring we had everything we needed. Handy tip take some fire wood or coal as it does get chilly however we did get by with just the heated blanket and just a note it’s a bit of a hill to get in but perfectly manageable even in a small car. If you’re thinking of booking definitely do you won’t be disappointed!

Weekend Trip to Sunbank Accommodation, Llangollen

Sunbank yurt We had a lovely time, Sarah provided coal and wood and once the fire got going it was warm & cozy inside. Electric blanket, hot water bottles & blankets provided so, we didn’t feel cold at all. The bathroom is very simple, the loo is a porta potti. It was clean though! Easy to contact the host & lots of information given in the welcome document. The kitchen is outside, fridge available & there is everything you may need. Overall we had a lovely trip away. The only thing we would mention is that we wish there was some sort of lighting directly outside the yurt as there are some steps to get to the kitchen / bathroom & you couldn’t see if you sat outside at night time, we needed to keep a torch on.

Where to go

Cambrian Mountains

Rugged hills loom across the midriff of Mid Wales, and although never surpassing 2,475 feet, the Cambrian Mountains are mighty wild places with few beaten paths. Britain’s most remote land south of the Scottish Highlands, the area is most easily accessed from Machynlleth, Aberystwyth, and towns like Builth Wells to the east. There are scarcely any campsites in the middle, so towns on the periphery are best as camping bases.

Cardigan Bay

Curving north from North Pembrokeshire to Southern Gwynedd along the Mid Wales coast, Wales’ biggest bay was where camping in Wales really took off. Along this beguiling seaboard, mainly made up of sandy beaches and coves and with terrific sea life (including Europe’s biggest bottlenose dolphin population), Cardigan Bay hosts a greater density of campgrounds and caravan parks than anywhere else in the country. Expect both big affairs with myriad facilities and farm sites with a few tent spaces.

Welsh Borderlands

Also often referred to as the Welsh Marches, this hilly region historically divided Wales from England. It’s a land littered with castles, grand manor houses, and history-rich small towns, all positioned within pretty countryside lined by trails like the Offa’s Dyke Path. Camping is especially good in the woodsy Wye Valley AONB in the south.

Brecon Beacons National Park

Mid Wales merges into the Brecon Beacons National Park to the south—a renowned hillwalking destination with both the Beacons Way and Cambrian Way passing through. Southern Britain’s highest land is here, and the northern part of the upland is easily accessible from towns like Llandeilo, Llandovery, Brecon, and Hay-on-Wye, also handy for exploring southern Mid Wales. The area around Brecon has some cracking campsites.
