As you'd expect from a site with such a name, there's a whole lot of space in which to relax and explore at 5 Acres, a large grassy site in the Somerset Levels. Kids and dogs are both welcome on site here, and there's plenty of scope for them to run about and play games safely away from barbecues and campfires (which are also permitted to keep you warm and fed in the evenings). Facilities on site include firepits, a toilet and shower block and outdoor sinks with mains water. Dogs must be kept on leads at all time. We class ourselves as a quite site so no amplified music. The premier pitch is fully enclosed so dogs can be let off the lead. There is a maximum of six people allowed on this pitch at any one time. Visitors are allowed as long as the total number of people doesn't exceed six and they are chargeable at the overnight rate and must leave by 18:00 - Sorry, had the envelope pushed a bit! Mains hook ups are 6Amp max rated. Pitches are approximately 16m x 20m. The flag, firepit and pitch number line up in the centre of your pitch. The surrounding Somerset Levels aren’t just out in the sticks – they also produce them. Willow cane has been cultivated the traditional way in this part of the county for hundreds of years and can be seen growing within a mile of 5 Acres. The Levels are also a wildlife haven, making them an all-round top choice for country walks along the many trails nearby. And while this may be a rural retreat, it's also one that's easy to get to as it's just off the A378 (no winding country lanes to negotiate for this one…) Taunton town centre, with its wide range of shops and supermarkets, is a 15-minute drive away. The closest pub and coffee shop are five minutes away by road.

We set up our campsite to be a unique place where guests could be as close to nature as possible, while retaining some of the basic comforts of home. Think wildflower meadow with hot showers! We've gone for ultimate peace and tranquility, with a very limited number of pitches mown into the wildflowers with lots of space between. Our remote site is far from roads or light pollution, making for serene starry nights around the firepit. The camping meadow is bordered by woodlands, a small nature reserve, and the gardens of a stunning Tudor manor house, all of which you're free to explore. Nestled in a remote and picturesque corner of West Dorset, the campsite is within easy reach of some of the South West's most stunning spots, from world-famous fossil beaches to neolithic hill-forts.

Where to go

Exmoor National Park

A dark sky reserve and haven for wildlife and culture, Exmoor National Park is just over an hour west from Glastonbury. Speed down mountain bike trails, head to Wimbleball Lake for canoeing and fishing, or wander to the shoreline for rock pooling when the tides recede. Stay in star-gazer tents with clear-panel roofs to view the night sky from the comfort of a cosy double bed, while tea warms on the stove. There’s also an abundance of holiday parks, some with riverside pitches that offer wifi access, shower facilities, and dog-wash stations.

Cheddar Gorge

The awe-inspiring cliffs and caves of Cheddar Gorge are found just 30 minutes north of Glastonbury in Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Explore the underground passageways, rock climb the 450-foot high limestone cliffs, or conquer the Cliff-Top Walk to take in spectacular views of Somerset Hills at the top of the gorge. Rent a vintage Airstream with a king-size bed, park the caravan at a holiday park with full hookups, or opt for a wood-frame cabin rental with a spa-like bathroom.

Blackdown Hills Area of Natural Beauty

An hour drive southwest brings campers to Blackdown Hills Area of Natural Beauty.

A classic representation of the English countryside, the area of Blackdown Hills encompasses picturesque villages with traditional pubs, sprawling farmland, and forests filled with wildlife. Experience the biodiversity in Halsdon Nature Reserve, or head to Culm Valley and explore walking and cycling trails. Pitch a tent in a field with sweeping open skies and convenient access to toilets, showers, and potable water. Holiday parks for caravans are also available—some feature private firepits, picnic tables, and wifi.

When to go

Around Glastonbury, summers are sunny and winters are rainy, brisk, and windy. The best time to experience the great outdoors is June until late September. Rain starts in October and lightens up in March. Summer months are drier, though light drizzles occur sporadically. A variety of festivals occur from spring until fall, like the Dark Sky Festival in Exmoor National Park in October.
