There’s plenty of camping and glamping in Wells and the countryside that surrounds it – and it’s popular with good reason. On the edge of Somerset’s Mendip Hills, Wells is a city that’s the size of a village – only able to claim the status because of its 13th-century cathedral. It’s a lovely place to visit in a scenic spot that’s well within reach of Somerset’s other best-loved locations. And while Somerset’s historic cities, market towns and big attractions are a draw, it’s the great outdoors that’s the star of the show which is why camping and glamping are the best ways to stay here. If you’re camping or glamping near Wells, a visit to the city that’s the size of a village is almost obligatory. The ornate 13th-century cathedral, which gives the place its city status, is open to visitors - as is the 14th-century Bishop’s Palace and Gardens, home of the Bishop of Bath and Wells. You can learn about the history of the area in the Wells and Mendips Museum in town too – before heading out to explore the Mendips themselves. The hills have been designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, one of several in the county, and it’s a great area to explore with steep slopes, spectacular gorges and ancient monuments.

Wells is just five miles from Glastonbury, the site of the legendary music festival at Worthy Farm, but also another place of spiritual significance with its abbey and iconic tower-topped tor. Wookey Hole and Wookey village are even closer and offer family friendly attractions along with the chance to go underground. Cheddar, with its famous gorge, caves and cheese, is also within the Mendips and well worth a visit. In fact, the Medips hides the largest underground network of caves in the whole of the UK so, for the more adventurous, Wells is a great place to camp or glamp. It’s within reach of some of the country’s best caving opportunities and for newbies there are plenty of outdoor pursuits companies willing to show you the ropes. Bath, Bristol and the coast can also be reached within an hour.

England's smallest city, Wells is a must-visit for campers pitching up in this part of the Somerset. Famed for it's magnificent, Gothic cathedral and the moated Bishop's Palace, the town packs plenty of history, while, surrounding it, the countryside, from Cheddar Gorge to the Somerset Levels, is equally thrilling to explore.

A family run campsite around 30 miles south of Bristol on the banks of the River Brue, it has a relaxed vibe and we try to keep things simple and straight forward. It’s ideal for doing some day trips nearby, then lighting the BBQ and playing Frisbee (games box you are most welcome to use). Our big sister site is just 4 miles away, and the café bar at 'Wall Eden Farm' serves fantastic coffee, cake, and family-made Somerset cider. If looking for classic countryside pub meal The Duck at Burtle and The Bird at Westhay are local favourites, be sure to book! Off the beaten track on top of the Mendips in an area of outstanding natural beauty. A mixture of four acres of wild woodland, orchard and field set on a hillside. Our Yurt is set up in the trees giving you peaceful seclusion and a clear view across the sea to Wales and the mountains of the Brecon Beacons. A huge range of activities are possible or you can lie in the hammock with a good book. We have very friendly dogs and rescue chickens who may come and visit. Wild deer wander past in the early morning mist and the odd buzzard picks an argument with a bunch of crows but nothing much else should disturb you. We moved here after an 18 month search 8 years ago. It was close to everything we wanted and we've spent some time getting a bit closer.

Kids and dogs are both welcome on site here, and there's plenty of scope for them to run about and play games safely away from barbecues and campfires (which are also permitted to keep you warm and fed in the evenings). Facilities on site include firepits, a toilet and shower block and outdoor sinks with mains water. We no longer sell logs. Nearest supplier is Knight Bros Garage. Dogs must be kept on leads at all time. We class ourselves as a quite site so no amplified music. The premier pitch is fully enclosed so dogs can be let off the lead. There is a maximum of six people allowed on this pitch at any one time. Visitors are allowed as long as the total number of people doesn't exceed six and they are chargeable at the overnight rate and must leave by 18:00 - Sorry, had the envelope pushed a bit! Mains hook ups are 6Amp max rated. Pitches are approximately 16m x 16m. The flag, firepit and pitch number line up in the centre of your pitch. The surrounding Somerset Levels aren’t just out in the sticks – they also produce them. Willow cane has been cultivated the traditional way in this part of the county for hundreds of years and can be seen growing within a mile of 5 Acres. The Levels are also a wildlife haven, making them an all-round top choice for country walks along the many trails nearby. And while this may be a rural retreat, it's also one that's easy to get to as it's just off the A378 (no winding country lanes to negotiate for this one…) Taunton town centre, with its wide range of shops and supermarkets, is a 15-minute drive away. The closest pub and coffee shop are five minutes away by road.

Fantastic hosts who met us on arrival, very helpful friendly and informative. We were lucky enough to have the pick of where we wanted to set up and we chose a lovely spot with a short walk to the facilities. The facilities were well kept, clean and tidy and had everything you would need for a comfortable stay. We were lucky enough to be greeted by the geese when we woke up today, although we weren’t as lucky with the fishing! Our hosts were kind enough to tell us about their farm shop and cafe where activities such as air rifle shooting and axe throwing were available which we will definitely look at doing next time🙂 Our hosts were so accommodating and even cooked us a delicious breakfast when their cafe was usually closed(Mondays) From start to finish a fantastic stay we were well looked after and cannot recommend this place enough. They also have some impressive looking glamping pods and log cabins-some have hot tubs which is something we will be considering for our next visit. Thank you again Andy, Allie and staff x

Wow, Little Eden is exactly what it says it is. It has everything for a wonderful camping experience. You are totally emmersed in Nature. You can hear the wild life and birds around you. You can use a fire pit and sit outside under the stars, whilst keeping warm. The decor is beautiful, the facilities are great. The ground is flat! Each pitch is numbered (very spacious) with it's own firepit in front of you. Very well set out. I like the one way system, easy to follow. Toilets clean. Site was easy to find as well. There is no 'view' to speak of but you are in the countryside so trees, hedges, birdsong and the stars at night. The host is a lovely person to have a chat to as well.

I found Qookey Farm Campsite by accident but liked the sound of not, being close to Wells and Glastonbury. It's quite a find. Each pitch is spacious, with its own power source and refuse collection point. Toilets are close by - the only downside? No shower facility. I'd recommend it to anyone..

Loved staying here for 5 nights. The views are amazing, the limited pitches mean that everyone has private space and you don’t feel on top of each other. The bathrooms and washing facilities are great and the sun heated water was always perfect temperature. Something to make it feel even more private would be to really encourage meadow flowers or longer grass between the pitches to allow the private paths to each tent to feel extra special and allow for the space to feel even more private and hidden from the other tents. A hidden gem!

With different options for camping on site, there were plenty of choices for a stay at Haddon Copse.

Lovely small campsite with a very generous flat pitch for our tent. We had a wonderful stay with lovely walks along the stour and close to Sherborne and Shaftesbury which are picturesque little towns. Amenities were good with hot showers and washing up area. We did not take advantage of the organic food available to buy, but a very nice touch. Would definitely return for another stay.

This was good trip. The campsite is large and open so you can pick any spot you like. There is a place for a campfire in the middle of the field with some seats. There is drinking water on site and the toilets are very decent with toilet paper and soap provided. There is a shop where u can get wood, vegies, cold drinks and other bits (soft drinks only) The staff running the site are very friendly. There is showers on site with hot water and fairly good pressure. There is lots of green fields and a few local attractions. We did the Glastonbury Tor. I recommend doing it in the evening when the sun goes down. Be careful tho, it's quite steep so wear good shoes. On the farm itself you can see rabbits, lamas and goats. If you walk up the hill a bit you might see larga large herd of bulls who turned out to be very friendly (if you feed them some grass, but be careful, it's a bull). We were also lucky to see army planes and helicopters doing a very low fly by above the camping site. Very impressive. Overall we had a good time and it was a cheap little holiday.

Weekend Trip to Gurt Yurts

Camping at The Batch was a tranquil and relaxing experience for a short get-away over the bank holiday weekend. The area itself is great for anyone wanting to visit surrounding locations (such as Cheddar and Wells), but also for people wanting to unwind amongst some stunning views. The badminton court gave us great entertainment, and in the summer there’s a TON of dragonfly’s by the orchard so we set to the impossible challenge of getting a non blurry photo, but never succeeded. The fire pits made for some great BBQ’s and source of heat while stargazing too! However, the experience doesn’t stop at just the campsite itself. Tim takes great pride in maintaining the area and assisting everyone in anyway he can. From the offset he offered to help us move our equipment and to give us a tour of all on offer, including some fresh plums from his orchard! During pass by Tim would check in on us and ask how we were and what adventures we went on, but also to offer to help us with anything else we needed. It’s fair to say the amazing site was taken to the next level from Tim’s great hospitality and super character. I would highly recommend and will definitely set pitch again! Hopefully next time I’ll get some better photos of the dragonfly’s!

The landscape around the campsite was really beautiful, which made for a great place to sit and enjoy the scenery or as a base to explore the surrounding countryside.

Weekend Trip to Holyrood Farm Campsite

Fantastic views over the valley. Clean toilet and showers. It was lovely and quiet and we could fully relax and unwind. A short walk into Shaftesbury where there are plenty of pubs and places to eat. We had a great time and will be back.

Famed for its magnificent, Gothic cathedral and the moated Bishop's Palace, Wells packs plenty of history within its tight and tiny space. The countryside that surrounds it, from Cheddar Gorge to Glastonbury Tor and the Somerset Levels, is equally thrilling to explore and perfect camping country.
