A single yurt in a Somerset meadow filled with wildflowers, herbs and apple trees makes up Ashmeadow Private Yurt Retreat. You won’t be quaffing Champagne in the hot tub (there isn’t one); more likely sipping local cider by the fire after a day exploring nearby Glastonbury Tor.

The glamping here is designed to help you relax in nature and immerse you in rural Somerset life, all year round. In spring the trees and hedgerows surrounding this exclusive-hire acre are covered in blossom. In summer the wildflowers come alive with butterflies and bees and there’s activity on the farm next door. In early autumn, the apples on the trees and nearby cider farms ripen and, as winter approaches, murmurations of starlings begin to appear overhead. You’ll be grateful of the log burner at this time of year. It easily warms the 18-foot space you’ll be sleeping in. There’s a double bed and a futon sofa so the space is great for couples and big enough for families too. And you’re welcome to bring the dog.

The yurt and its surroundings are not a bells and bunting place. It’s more rustic than that with eclectic vintage and handbuilt pieces among the furniture, fittings and amenities. You can cook on a two ring gas stove in the yurt but those who will like it here are more likely to favour the fire pit outside. The compost loo is also out there. Life seems to necessarily slow down here. And that’s the best way to enjoy this off-grid retreat.

You may take a trip out to Glastonbury, just nine miles away, or to the even closer Avalon Marshes. Perhaps you’ll cycle to Bere Cider farm, visit Langport to paddleboard on the River Parrett or head further to explore Cheddar Gorge. All this is easily reached and well worth exploring but you might just find that the best bit of your Somerset stay will be when you’re back here at your own private yurt retreat.
