Looking to go camping or glamping near Corfe Castle? You might get closer than you think – not because the National Trust who look after the 1,000-year-old fortress have opened up the gates to let people camp in its shadow, but because Corfe Castle is also the name of the nearby picturesque village. Nonetheless, it’s likely that the awe-inspiring castle is what’s drawing you to this part of Dorset. As one of the county’s major tourist attractions, with a location in the middle of the Isle of Purbeck, who could blame you? It’s had that effect on people for years and one of the results of its popularity is a wealth of campsites within easy reach of the castle walls. The Hipcamp team are a discerning lot though and we only give the thumbs up to places that measure up. You won’t find holiday park-style sites among the Hipcamp collection but you might find somewhere you can pitch up and have a campfire. You’re unlikely to find a run-down mobile home but you might find a restored vintage caravan. The evocative ruins of Corfe Castle stand at the heart of the Isle of Purbeck. Visible for miles around they are one of Dorset’s must-see attractions. Managed by the National Trust, the entrance fee allows you into the grounds and visitor centre where you can learn about the centuries of building, rebuilding and destruction that’s shaped what you can see today. In the nearby village, you can visit Corfe Castle Model Village to see what the castle would have been like before it was left in ruins by Oliver Cromwell’s allies in the English Civil War. The steam and diesel trains of the Swanage Railway puff their way right past the castle, which has its own stop in the village, en route from Norden to the seaside at Swanage.

Although it’s known as an island, Purbeck is really a peninsula. Surrounded by water on three sides, when you’re on the peninsula, you’re never too far from the sea and the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Jurassic Coast. Apart from the seaside fun of Swanage, there’s fossil-hunting and snorkelling at Kimmeridge Bay, world-class wildlife watching at RSPB Arne on Poole Harbour and the fascinating rock formations at Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. The pretty and historic town of Wareham is also within reach and for rainy-day fun there’s Monkey World Ape Sanctuary, the Bovington Tank Museum and Thomas Hardy’s Cottage. As you'd expect from a site with such a name, there's a whole lot of space in which to relax and explore at 5 Acres, a large grassy site in the Somerset Levels. Kids and dogs are both welcome on site here, and there's plenty of scope for them to run about and play games safely away from barbecues and campfires (which are also permitted to keep you warm and fed in the evenings). Facilities on site include firepits, a toilet and shower block and outdoor sinks with mains water. We no longer sell logs. Nearest supplier is Knight Bros Garage. Dogs must be kept on leads at all time. We class ourselves as a quite site so no amplified music. The premier pitch is fully enclosed so dogs can be let off the lead. There is a maximum of six people allowed on this pitch at any one time. Visitors are allowed as long as the total number of people doesn't exceed six and they are chargeable at the overnight rate and must leave by 18:00 - Sorry, had the envelope pushed a bit! Mains hook ups are 6Amp max rated. Pitches are approximately 16m x 16m. The flag, firepit and pitch number line up in the centre of your pitch. The surrounding Somerset Levels aren’t just out in the sticks – they also produce them. Willow cane has been cultivated the traditional way in this part of the county for hundreds of years and can be seen growing within a mile of 5 Acres. The Levels are also a wildlife haven, making them an all-round top choice for country walks along the many trails nearby. And while this may be a rural retreat, it's also one that's easy to get to as it's just off the A378 (no winding country lanes to negotiate for this one…) Taunton town centre, with its wide range of shops and supermarkets, is a 15-minute drive away. The closest pub and coffee shop are five minutes away by road.

Both tents are six metres in diameter with skylight windows, providing uninterrupted views of the night sky. Each tent has a king-size bed and two single "camp" beds suitable for children. There are log burners, fire pits and outdoor kitchens. Electricity is available too. There are a wealth of walks direct from the campsite to a number of local pubs and other attractions. Further down our lane is a cycle path which links to Ilminster, Chard and beyond. The Jurassic Coast (and Lyme Regis) can be reached within 25 minutes. Fantastic hosts who met us on arrival, very helpful friendly and informative. We were lucky enough to have the pick of where we wanted to set up and we chose a lovely spot with a short walk to the facilities. The facilities were well kept, clean and tidy and had everything you would need for a comfortable stay. We were lucky enough to be greeted by the geese when we woke up today, although we weren’t as lucky with the fishing! Our hosts were kind enough to tell us about their farm shop and cafe where activities such as air rifle shooting and axe throwing were available which we will definitely look at doing next time🙂 Our hosts were so accommodating and even cooked us a delicious breakfast when their cafe was usually closed(Mondays) From start to finish a fantastic stay we were well looked after and cannot recommend this place enough. They also have some impressive looking glamping pods and log cabins-some have hot tubs which is something we will be considering for our next visit. Thank you again Andy, Allie and staff x

The ground is flat! Each pitch is numbered (very spacious) with it's own firepit in front of you. Very well set out. I like the one way system, easy to follow. Toilets clean. Site was easy to find as well. There is no 'view' to speak of but you are in the countryside so trees, hedges, birdsong and the stars at night. The host is a lovely person to have a chat to as well.

My partner and I went camping here for 2 nights (Fri-sun) with our 3 dogs (2 off leash). The staff are soo amazing and attentive! There’s so much space and all of the other campers we met were soo kind and respectful. The kitchen is well maintained. The shower/toilet was clean and I had hot water for my shower. It was so amazing to just have a peaceful weekend away from the world. Before we even left we started planning our next trip back! 10/10 experience

The only slightly negative is the presence of farm dogs who seemingly have free rein over the site. Those who dislike being “investigated” by dogs may want to bear this in mind.
