You might get closer than you think – not because the National Trust who look after the 1,000-year-old fortress have opened up the gates to let people camp in its shadow, but because Corfe Castle is also the name of the nearby picturesque village. Nonetheless, it’s likely that the awe-inspiring castle is what’s drawing you to this part of Dorset. As one of the county’s major tourist attractions, with a location in the middle of the Isle of Purbeck, who could blame you? It’s had that effect on people for years and one of the results of its popularity is a wealth of campsites within easy reach of the castle walls. The evocative ruins of Corfe Castle stand at the heart of the Isle of Purbeck. Visible for miles around they are one of Dorset’s must-see attractions. Managed by the National Trust, the entrance fee allows you into the grounds and visitor centre where you can learn about the centuries of building, rebuilding and destruction that’s shaped what you can see today. In the nearby village, you can visit Corfe Castle Model Village to see what the castle would have been like before it was left in ruins by Oliver Cromwell’s allies in the English Civil War. The steam and diesel trains of the Swanage Railway puff their way right past the castle, which has its own stop in the village, en route from Norden to the seaside at Swanage.

Although it’s known as an island, Purbeck is really a peninsula. Surrounded by water on three sides, when you’re on the peninsula, you’re never too far from the sea and the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Jurassic Coast. Apart from the seaside fun of Swanage, there’s fossil-hunting and snorkelling at Kimmeridge Bay, world-class wildlife watching at RSPB Arne on Poole Harbour and the fascinating rock formations at Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. A family run campsite around 30 miles south of Bristol on the banks of the River Brue, it has a relaxed vibe and we try to keep things simple and straight forward. It’s ideal for doing some day trips nearby, then lighting the BBQ and playing Frisbee (games box you are most welcome to use). Fantastic hosts who met us on arrival, very helpful friendly and informative. We were lucky enough to have the pick of where we wanted to set up and we chose a lovely spot with a short walk to the facilities. The facilities were well kept, clean and tidy and had everything you would need for a comfortable stay. We were lucky enough to be greeted by the geese when we woke up today, although we weren’t as lucky with the fishing! Our hosts were kind enough to tell us about their farm shop and cafe where activities such as air rifle shooting and axe throwing were available which we will definitely look at doing next time🙂 Our hosts were so accommodating and even cooked us a delicious breakfast when their cafe was usually closed(Mondays) From start to finish a fantastic stay we were well looked after and cannot recommend this place enough. They also have some impressive looking glamping pods and log cabins-some have hot tubs which is something we will be considering for our next visit. Thank you again Andy, Allie and staff x

We had a great stay. We stayed for one night and used it as a base to cycle to Glastonbury and back. We were left to ourselves and trusted by the owner which we loved. Sites like this are the reason we bought out camper van. Thanks for a great stay.

Such a relaxed place to go to. Enjoyed the cream tea, yummy homemade scones. Very friendly people, warden was very helpful and approachable. Love the buildings around us, the river and the pitches were flexible. Definitely recommend Sue

A very spacious campsite with well-maintained composting facilities. The scenic drive down to the site is beautiful, and the clear night skies make it perfect for stargazing. Martins and owls were active both day and night, adding to the atmosphere. On some alternate nights, music played nearby from around 10 pm to 4 am. While noticeable, it was at a consistent and tolerable volume, and importantly, it wasn’t accompanied by disruptive behaviour.

Weekend Trip to The Old Airfield

Absolutely loved camping at The Old Airfield. Very friendly staff and helpful. Loads of space to park up and tent so you'll never feel 'on top' of other campers. Lovely vibe, clean showers and toilets. Had a nice bar and pizza trailer on site too to order from every night. Very relaxing and loads of free roaming animals near by! Definitely will be coming back!

Just spent a lovely short two day break at the riverside. A simple site with some nice touches. Loved the games room complete with candelabra and wall tapestry ! All facilities quirky and rustic but everything clean. Would happily stay again.

The tent spaces are great. The river is lovely. Our two children were the whole day swimming in the river! They were allowed to use pallets to build their own raft. The tea in the tearoom was delicious.

What a beautiful campsite! The staff were both friendly and helpful, being surrounded by the old farm buildings was something else entirely. Washing up in a stable made the task almost pleasurable! The river was perfect to swim in with spots to paddle as well as fully swim further along. 10/10

Very relaxing, unspoilt, charming spot by the river, fires permitted - other guests were quiet, respectful and friendly - loos and showers, kitchen and fridge available for campers if required - less than an hour from Bristol - a hidden gem.

We camped during the week and on the Saturday. It had clean facilities and it was nice and peaceful during the week, but on the Friday night, it got slightly busier and others pitched their tents a little too close to ours (even when there was plenty of space in the middle) and were not told to move. I was woken up early by the sound of them hitting the shuttlecock (not even by them talking) that’s how close they were!
